My friend has been a resident for a few years now. Each time I visit he always appears to be happy and so well cared for. The Home is spotless and no unpleasant smells unlike some Homes where relatives have resided. The staff are so friendly and helpful. I hope it never happens but if I have to be put in a Home this is where I would like to be.

Review from Gill M (Daughter of Resident) published on 15 July 2026 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience
We looked at many residential homes before deciding on Somerforde, as Mum had always said she did not want to end her days in a home, but now, I only wish we had made the decision sooner.
Care staff are friendly, patient and caring. I often arrive to visit Mum to find one of the team talking with her or looking at one of her photo books with her. Staff turnover appears to be low which, in my book, indicates that staff are well looked after, as well as the residents, and I am certain this is what helps make Somerforde somewhere quite special.
Staff are always happy to talk to family and act on any concerns. Family and friends are welcome at any time so you know that what you see is what is going on for Mum at all times, which is very reassuring.

Mum has now been living at Somerforde for six months and she is doing much more than she had been doing in her own home. Knowing that she is safe and very well looked after has improved Mum's life and also that of her family. Thank you!

I was concerned about placing my mother in a residential home but I did not need to be. Since admission my mother has been made so welcome and looked after wonderfully.
The staff are so caring and friendly. The food is excellent.
You notice / feel that Sommerforde is a caring place as soon as you enter the building.

The best review however is from my mother who simply put it "I like it here"

Staff are friendly and helpful, and they create a relaxed atmosphere for both residents and visitors. Residents are entertained with games, etc. It must be hard work for them, but they smile all the time! They respond quickly if a resident has problems. Senior staff keep family members up to date with medication changes. Would I recommend Somerforde? Yes.

I came to Somerforde after a fall and sustaining a broken shoulder. I was living on my own and had several falls involving hospital stays and broken ribs. I was then offered respite care which I accepted reluctantly but it was the best thing that ever happened. If I knew anyone who experienced the same problems to shed any preconceptions regarding care homes and and my feeling of stigma towards them disappeared when I walked through the door. The meals are excellent but the portions are a bit on the larger side for me. No complaints regarding my help in recovery.

Overall Experience

My Mum attended this care home for respite before she became a permanent resident therefore I already knew the staff and their standard of care. When Mum arrived permanently, she was recovering from a broken hip. The staff gave Mum the greatest of care and attention and helped with her recovery. She was back up on her feet within a month. I was informed or made aware of all changes to her behaviour and medication during this time. Any concerns or requests have always been dealt with immediately. There is always activities or events for the residents to engage with and on occasions one-to-one interactions. As a family we are very happy with the care given by Somerforde and would highly recommend them as a good choice.

From day 1, my father in law has been well looked after. He is listened to and respected, even though at times, he can be quite awkward. It is such a comfort to know he is safe and well looked after. He has built up some good relationships with the team.

Staff are professional, friendly and welcoming. They have listened to us as a family when times have been hard and their input has been invaluable.

Thank you

My father was cared for 4 months and I appreciate the care he received. I have to warn people who are self funding to read the contract as my father signed for care which I was unaware of and when he passed away you have to pay far much more than non funding residents. No staff attended his funeral which was disappointing. I may be in a minority with my views but I write on my experiences.

I cannot praise this care home enough. It is welcoming, well maintained and homely. My Mum's needs are met and she always looks very well cared for. The staff are friendly and professional and communication is great, both in person and via phone or email. Although Mum is not at her best at this time in her life, she has the opportunity to join in with varied daily activities and to be around other people. I am very happy with the standard of care and support by Somerforde and highly recommend it.

My Dad has been a resident at Somerforde for almost a year following a sudden decline in his Parkinson's. From day one, the support from the staff has been exceptional. It's such a comfort knowing he's safe, cared for, respected, and genuinely happy. The relationships he's built with the team show how well they know and value him.

As a family, we have complete trust in Somerforde. The staff are always approachable, kind, and supportive to both Dad and us. They take time to listen, communicate openly, and keep us involved in every part of his care. Their warmth, dedication, and compassion mean the world to us.

Dad really enjoys the variety of food, which is always tailored to his needs and the fun, creative activities the staff encourage him to join. We truly feel part of the Somerforde family, it's such a warm, uplifting place that feels like home. We're so grateful and wouldn't hesitate to recommend you.

My mum receives excellent care at Somerforde from all the staff. Nothing is too much trouble, which has helped Mum settle in well. My mum was placed in Somerforde eighteen months ago due to a severe stroke that took away her independence. Having had to deal with the upset this caused, both for us and Mum, we were unsure of what we faced in the long term care and future needs.
We soon became very aware that the home was not only in a very pleasant location, but was well managed, maintained and the staff were personable. It took a little time for her to settle in, but she soon was singing the praises of staff, food and tasks that were done on her behalf. We too were treated like family and were updated with medical needs/requirements for her as we don’t live locally.

Sadly, my mum passed away recently and had to be hospitalised, but Somerforde were very supportive in her final days with any help required. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Somerforde as a family run care home, with the emphasis of family environment and the residents feel like family.
