The management and staff are very caring and understand my mother's 'sense of humour' very well. The moment any problems have arisen, they have been in direct contact with us and have helped to solve any outstanding issues.

The home may be small, but that is its endearing advantage.

Indeed, my mother is always saying how happy she is there.

My mum went to Garden House in July 2013 for a short stay and decided to go back after a few weeks back in her flat. She stayed at Garden House until 3rd March 2017 when she passed away aged 94. The staff are wonderful, very caring and kind, even though residents can be trying at times (Mum included). The food is very good. Activities - they have bingo, singers at times, lots more - I have put 'Good' because although they put the effort in, some residents don't join in.

When my mum passed, I was phoned and went to be with her to say goodbye. I can't say any more.

The care my father receives is above and beyond, and all the staff treat us as if we were family.

The home is clean and bright with no smells which was important when I started looking into care for my Dad.

I cannot praise the Garden House enough. My father has been here for two years and is happy, well fed, clean and contented.

For two and a half years my cousins were lucky to occupy a double room at the Garden House where their every need was met and they were able to enjoy being together in a happy, safe environment. Both being frail with different accelerating health issues it was difficult to find a facility that could take both of them in a double room. They were able to have some of their own furniture and more importantly mementoes of their married life around them. Their room had large patio doors which enabled them to see wildlife in the garden and views of the pond which helped provide an interest that matched their former country based life. The staff always responded rapidly to calls for assistance and every effort was made to provide cuisine that matched both their dietary requirements and personal wishes.

My sister in law was admitted to hospital for surgery only 6 weeks after joining the home - the care and empathy given by the home were excellent in her weeks after surgery.
The staff are unfailingly kind and welcoming to any visitors who turn up announced or unannounced.

There is a very friendly environment in the home with cheerful carers to attend residents.

My mum went into Garden House as she needed to convalesce after an operation in January 2016. Mum's stay was only meant to be temporary but due to complications with the operation and other health issues, she stayed there for 18 months.

I only have good things to report and we were indeed very fortunate to choose this rest home. The staff were very caring and made mum's stay bearable and fun as she was indeed a 'reluctant' resident! She was given first class care and attention and I cannot fault Garden House as there were definitely sometimes challenging and difficult times with mum. Living in London myself and my brother in Canada, knowing she was being so well cared for was a huge relief to us both.

Sadly mum passed away in July 2017 only four weeks after transferring to a nursing home. Mum forged special friendships with staff and four actually attended her funeral which is a testament to their commitment and caring.

Overall Experience

My mothers rapid and unexpected deterioration required an immediate upgrade in her level of care. I had the great good fortune to discover Garden House Rest Home close to my mothers existing accommodation, with a beautiful room vacant. The staff were welcoming and gave me great confidence that my mother would be properly cared for. By 5.00pm we were moved in, and made comfortable with every consideration. Throughout her stay her care was compassionate, unstinting, and perfectly pitched at my mothers deteriorating condition. My mother told me that she awarded me 11 out of 10 with a gold star for finding Garden House. It was not me that deserved the award but the outstanding leadership and teamwork of all of the staff. They were brilliant. I will actively recommend Garden House to any acquaintance whose family circumstance requires residential care of the highest standard.

Garden House is lovely, they look after their staff and that shines through in the care provided. The summer party for residents and families was a beautiful day and lots of effort was made to ensure everyone had a lovely day. There seems to always be a lot of effort made to better things.

Mel TorkingtonJob Title:Registered ManagerJoined: 2016
How long have you worked at Garden House?

I have worked at Garden House for 6 years. Previously I worked at a nursing home doing night shifts, so I decided to try residential care on day shifts (I was late a few times when doing early shifts).

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

I have a twin brother who is serving in the army. He is in the RAMC (Royal Army Medical Core), and we are very close. I used to play for Yeovil Town football club.

What is your proudest moment/achievement?

Completing my NVQ 5 and being a Registered Manager and getting Garden House its first awards in the categories "Team of the Year" & "Welfare and Well-being of Staff" 2024

How many years of experience in care do you have?

I have 12 years of experience in Nursing Care and residential and have my NVQ 2, 3 & 5.

What do you enjoy about Garden House?

It is not clinical, we all wear our home clothes to minimize that barrier of staff–resident, and as we are a small home, it’s very person-centred and we are one big family.
