Astell House is a striking home full of character and interest. The home is fully accessible; every room has ensuite facilities and residents are welcome to add furnishings and personal belongings.

The refurbished lounge, quiet room and dining room are all beautifully proportioned with high ceilings and large windows filling the rooms with light. The modern architect-designed conservatory gives a stunning living space offering a seamless link with the accessible gardens. The gardens offer plenty of places to sit quietly or socialise with family and friends with the beautiful architecture of Astell as its backdrop.

The care team includes dementia specialists and a qualified nurse (who works closely with the GP surgery and district nurses) and staff are experienced in end of life care.

The catering team provide fresh, nutritious home cooked food and are able to adapt the menu for different dietary requirements and for those with swallowing difficulties.

The activities team work both individually and in groups to offer varied, stimulating and enriching activities which include visiting musicians and entertainers, arts & crafts, gardening, games, trips out and cycle rides on a specially adapted trishaw.

The housekeeping and maintenance teams take great pride in keeping the home clean, fresh, safe, and looking at its best which has been particularly noted on in inspections.

Dad moved into Astell in November 2019 after losing his wife and suffering loneliness and a diagnosis of dementia; the move was a decision made by him. Since the move, there has been a marked improvement in his mental health, with most signs of dementia disappearing. He is occupied, socialising and
happy and takes part fully in all the activities. The management and staff have been amazing, nothing too much trouble and his medical care has been exemplary, particularly in these difficult times. It has been very reassuring over the past sixteen months to know that he is in such capable hands and local to his family who are kept in touch at all times. Thank you to everyone at Astell.

My wife was taken into care in December 2016 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and was becoming too much for me to look after at home.
My wife went first to a different home but this was closed after about 12 to 15 months but the transfer to Astell is shown by her successful life that
is shown in the ratings.

My mum moved into Astell House in Jan 2019. It was a very difficult decision for my sisters and I to make, but now having come to peace with this decision, we are all completely reassured that mum is in the right place receiving THE BEST CARE. The staff are so dedicated and the residents are all treated

Few people would choose to have to move into a care home, but if you have to be in a home, then Astell House is the place to be.
The staff are consistently kind, considerate, patient and friendly and treat dementia patients with great understanding and respect.
It takes time for resident and staff
to get to know and trust each other, but the Astell staff are committed to gaining an understanding of, and meeting, their residents' needs, and to building a relationship of trust.
Nothing is too much trouble, and family members are welcomed too, and their views are valued and respected.
Any issues are dealt with promptly by the management, and all efforts are made to resolve any problem.
Astell House is a home with a happy atmosphere.

Astell is the second home that my wife has been in. She has been very happy in both homes and the care she receives is superb. Her family and friends are made equally welcome by and friendly helpful and caring staff.there is a regular programme of events and activities to which family and friends can

Everyone I had dealings with in my mothers last few weeks was extremely caring and could not do enough to assist us. We felt like we were part of an extended family. We virtually lived there ourselves for a good 10 days and our every need was catered for. Can't praise everyone enough.

My uncle was independent so settling in was slow.
The home is under new management with an influx from a closed down home.
There is a new family forum set up by management.
I have every confidence the few problems we have had will/have been dealt with.
There is a general feeling of happiness in
staff, residents and families/supporters.
The new garden building due in September will be a great new asset.
It is clear cleanliness is taken seriously.

Astell feels welcoming and homely right from the start. Each resident is treated as an individual and care is always given with respect and kindness.


Whenever I visit my mother the person who lets me in always knows where my mother is and how she has been feeling on that particular day. The staff

are a lovely bunch of people who take pride in their work. Everything is done with a smile and nothing is too much trouble.

The staff at Astell are first class - always friendly and cheerful and respectful of my mother who although she cannot speak clearly, responds to them.

My personal experience to date has been excellent. My husband has settled and is very happy and contented. He adjusted to being in care very quickly and enjoys the company of the other residents. The staff treat my husband with courtesy and respect and if he wants something that is not on the menu,
they will do what they can to provide it. I am happy in the knowledge that my husband is in a safe and secure environment.

My Uncle currently resides at this home, I always receive a very warm welcome when visiting, nothing ever seems too much trouble. I know my Uncle is well looked after and is very happy in the home. He gets to go out of the home on many trips and outings, I was amazed to receive a picture of him by email
steering a narrow boat on a recent outing to the Sharpness.

I am a frail 93-year-old, resident here since Feb 2014, although this is an oldish building the standard of maintenance and service is extremely high. The attitude of the staff is one of cheerful (happy even!) helpfulness and reflects the training they have clearly received. There is a wide range of
frailties among us all but we are each given individual attention- I simply cannot speak too highly of my treatment here.

Karen

Karen Barry

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2023

Karen Barry is a home manager at Astell House and a qualified nurse. She started her career as a carer at St Faith’s and was inspired to train as a nurse. She graduated from Bristol University in 2008 and spent three years in the NHS as a community nurse but when she spotted a nursing job at St Faith’s she returned in 2010. After nine years she became Head Nurse, in addition, she has trained as a Dementia Lead and a nurse mentor for University student nurses. Karen is now using her wealth of experience as a home manager at Astell House.
