The previous management that was in charge of the home when my dad first arrived was new and seemed extremely overwhelmed with the running of the home, which made the transition of Dad going from his home to being cared for by strangers very unsettling. But then the new manager who is currently here
took over and everything changed, Dad settled in, communication between staff became so much better, their approach to Dad after training put in place by the new manager and with her superb knowledge and guidance, the whole atmosphere of the home changed. I am happy my dad is safe and cared for here, the staff are amazing, the manager even more so.
Reply from Emma Breslan, Manager at Northway House Residential HomeThank you Sarah for you lovely kind words, I will relay this to the team and thank you for entrusting us to look after your lovely dad.

Wonderful staff, so friendly and caring. The atmosphere was wonderful, even down to the maintenance man, the entertainment for the residents was a lot of fun. Again, wonderful staff. I don't live in the UK, but I can leave knowing my mum is in excellent care.
Thank you so much for taking great care
of my mum.

The care he has received since moving into the home has got better and better. They care for his wellbeing as well as all of his daily care. It has helped me see him settled now and as happy as he can be with dementia, which is down to the management and staff in the home.

This care home is excellent. The carers are very good with my husband. The selection of food and drink is very good, room is always clean and tidy. Laundry is done and always returned to the correct room. The manager is very approachable and nothing is too much trouble if you need anything, she will
always be able to help.

Unfortunately our experience has not been good since had came i December left too long on his own in room. Where he will try and wash up his food dishes. Becuase he is not supervised also the food is very poor. Since we've been here we have been told the chief is going. She is still here. There is a
new manager now this is the 3rd since Decemeber. I hope things improve now.

Very pleased with the care my mum has had, very caring staff, they seem to spend time with the residents and sit and talk to them, not just to see how they are and walk away. The care home is very clean, no carpets (great news) Residents have lovely meals and snacks, not short on food. Mum is clean,
well-fed and seems as happy as she can be with dementia.

I stayed at Northway House for 13 days of remedial care following a hip replacement surgery. For most of my stay, I became increasingly independent needing minimum help, but help and care was always there if needed. Under these circumstances, I am unable to comment on the whole extensive intimate care
given to most of the residents but I have no doubt that it is first class. Catering is excellent, the meals are well cooked and varied also, with in-between meal drinks and titbits. Day or night nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the carers who faced every request with willingness and a smile.
I think it is only fair to say that carers are grossly underrated by those in managerial positions (few if any of whom would be capable of doing the job) and their value to society needs to be drastically updated.

My father recently spent two months in Northway House having respite care. I am writing to say how very much I appreciated the wonderful care which you provided for my father, throughout the time he spent with you. He always looked clean and well-cared for. He felt he had friends amongst the staff and
had nothing but the highest praise for their professional efficiency. He also enjoyed his interaction with other residents. He thought that the meals provided were excellent. During my frequent visits, I noticed a really good atmosphere in Northway House, where nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Help was always provided in a cheerful and chatty manner. This excellent attitude was apparent in every member of staff from the top all the way through. The house is well-appointed with a lovely and accessible garden. I noticed a high level of regard for safety. In my opinion, Northway House is a truly wonderful retirement home.

Northway House was my fathers home and family for the past nearly 4 years. Northway has a great team of carers who looked after dad and cared for him giving dad the opportunity to remain as independent as he could be, but also making sure he had the right support and care when required. They all showed
great kindness.

Northway House gave my friend the care and devoted attention she needed. My friend was in hospital on numerous occasions. She needed nursing care and Northway House welcomed her back from hospital so they could provide that care, of which they did until she passed away. They said it was her home and
the care she received was the utmost.

My aunt died here in November, after the happiest years of her retirement. The care she received was second to none; I could not have asked for better. But this was not special treatment for her closing weeks, albeit she did require more one-to-one care. All the Northway House residents get it as a
matter of course, as and when it is needed. It has been so for the five years I've been associated with it. These are residents, not patients; but care, consideration and respect are paramount. My 3 "good" ratings do not imply any shortfall! But the building is what it is; for all that matters, the scores are excellent.

My elderly Aunt moved into Northway House Residential Home at very short notice having become malnourished and no longer capable of looking after herself in her own home even with the support of carers. That was some 18months ago and thanks to the strong but discreet care and support provided she has
put on weight and is once again a happy and healthy 95 year old. I recognise as an old building Northway House may not suit everyone but it's ideal for my Aunt. She feels comfortable because the staff whilst supportive when necessary, allow her the independence she wants.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.635)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.635) out of 10 for Northway House Residential Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 14 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.810 for Northway House Residential Home is calculated as follows: ( (149 Excellents x 5) + (11 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 168 Ratings = 4.81
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.825 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Northway House Residential Home is based on 13 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.825
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 13 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
