Ferns staff and management have been unable to consistently assist my mother to make video calls as I live in the USA. This was a criteria used to select this care facility over a year ago. Whilst I know my mother is well cared for at the Ferns and I know the staff are well intended, they clearly
lack the ability to enact this important element of my mothers care plan. The Ferns team and I have made multiple efforts and plans to resolve this. Some plans have been sustained for two weeks, but inevitably communication in the team breaks down and the communication problems resume. I have pointed out that UK healthcare law very precisely states that facilitation of communication between residents and family is an obligation for the assisted living team. Again to no avail.
I recognize this is a bit of a unique situation, although I would caution that many seniors experience difficulty initiating and receiving communication from family, which is why it is specified in the law.

My grandmother is very blessed to be at The Ferns. She has been there seven months and is settled and content. All the staff work very hard and are attentive to all the residents needs. The Ferns is comfortable and homely, the staff friendly and welcoming. I know my grandmother is well looked after

Called to see mum when staff informed me they have a singer booked so I stayed to watch. Brilliant afternoon spent with a room full of smiling happy people singing and dancing
At 92 mum even asked me to help her dance which we did. What a caring and stimulating place for mum to be. Thank you
all.
Reply from Kim Rogerson, Director at The Ferns Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to share such a lovely review.
We're delighted to hear how much you and your mum enjoyed the afternoon with the singer. Moments like these, filled with music, smiles and shared happiness, really do mean a great deal to us. It's especially heart-warming to hear that your mum felt so engaged and happy that she wanted to dance with you - those are the moments we strive to create every day.
Thank you for your kind words. Your appreciation means a lot to the whole team, and we're very grateful for your support.

My mother has been in the Ferns for about 4 months, and despite her initial worries, she is now settled and happy. The staff are amazing with nothing too much trouble, and the place is spotlessly clean. It feels more like a high-standard B&B rather than a care home. My mother loves the food too.
Reply from Kim Rogerson, Director at The Ferns Care HomeThank you so much for your wonderful review.

We are delighted to hear that your mother has settled in so well and is now happy at The Ferns, especially after her initial worries. Your kind comments about our staff, cleanliness and homely environment mean a great deal to us, as we work hard to create a welcoming, comfortable place where residents truly feel at home.

It is also lovely to hear that your mother is enjoying the food our team takes great pride in providing meals that are both nutritious and enjoyable.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. Your feedback is greatly appreciated by the whole team at The Ferns.

Mum has been at the Ferns for four and half years and has the onset of dementia, The management and staff are so kind and caring it gives me peace of mind, Mum has had mood swings in the past but with care and attention she seems to be moor content and happy.
Reply from Kim Rogerson, Director at The Ferns Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of The Ferns.

We are truly grateful for your kind words and for the trust you have placed in us over the past four and a half years. Knowing that our care, attention and understanding have helped your mum feel more settled, content and happy particularly as she lives with the onset of dementia means a great deal to our whole team.

Providing reassurance and peace of mind to families is just as important to us as the care we give to our residents, and your feedback is a real testament to the compassion and dedication shown by our management and staff every day.

The manager, manages The Ferns so well, always ready to listen, help, advise and put in action. My dad has been at The Ferns from Oct 24 and still lives here. The staff always welcoming, cleanliness second to none, food really is outstanding. Every room is clean, tidy and enviting. Staff are smartly
dressed, professional and welcoming. Dad is deteriorating in health and mental state, alterations are made to adhere to his every need. He is so happy at The Ferns.
Reply from Kim Rogerson, Director at The Ferns Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of The Ferns. We are truly grateful for your kind words.
It means a great deal to hear your appreciation for our manager and team. Listening, supporting, and acting promptly are central to how we care, and were so pleased this has been reflected in your dads experience. Our staff work hard to maintain a welcoming atmosphere, high standards of cleanliness, and delicious, nutritious food, so your feedback will mean a lot to them.
We understand how difficult it can be to see a loved ones health change, and were glad you feel reassured by the adjustments weve made to support your dads needs. Knowing he is happy and comfortable at The Ferns is incredibly important to us.

My wife has had a very stressful 6 months 1st month in hospital 5 times with various problems I felt they could have done more for her. On entering the Ferns she was under weight not much confidence and couldn't hold any sort of conversation I feel now 5 months later she chats to people joins in the
activities who one member of staff, in particular, looks in my view she is brilliant and very helpful I found. Most of the carers try and give her a lot of time, I feel with the staff they love what they do very well unlike the hospital staff

The communication between the home and myself is poor, despite events affecting my loved one. There are too few experienced carers and too many who don't have a clue. This care home is not a patch on the previous owner's management of it. It needs to improve (care, not appearance!)
Reply from Kim Rogerson, Director at The Ferns Care HomeThank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're truly sorry to hear that you feel communication hasn't met your expectations. Please know that we genuinely care about your experience and your relative's wellbeing. Our team has made several efforts to arrange a meeting with you, as we would really value the opportunity to listen and work through any concerns together. In previous conversations, you've shared positive comments, which we've appreciated - but we want to ensure you feel fully supported. The team at The Ferns includes a mix of experienced carers and newer staff, all of whom are supported through training and close supervision. We are committed to continuous improvement and are proud of the dedication our staff show each day.We would be very grateful if you would consider a meeting so we can better understand your concerns and move forward positively, together. Please feel free to contact the Home Manager at any time - we are here to help.

Mum has been a resident at the Ferns for 6 months now. The staff have made mum feel so welcome and always go the extra mile to ensure mum's care needs are met. Mum says she always enjoys chatting with the staff and there is always great activities planned each week. Although mum is reluctant sometimes,
when she does attend she has a lovely time. The home is always clean and tidy and the staff are always so friendly and professional. The standard of care at the Ferns in my opinion is excellent. It is always hard to choose a care home for a loved one, but I'm glad we chose this one.
Thank you to each and every one of you at the Ferns for making my mum and my family feel part of your little community.

My mother arrived as a temporary resident and has now recently become permanent. The home has moved her room to be more comfortable due to her lack of mobility and secured a specific bed to aid her. The manager of the facility put the bed together themselves after a delay from the manufacturer. The
care has been outstanding and the whole experience excellent. Nothing is too much trouble and the staff go above and beyond.

The staff at The Ferns recognised immediately that Dad is a private person who dislikes people invading his personal space, with that in mind they were able to make him comfortable and feel welcomed in the home. He likes to wander and the staff were happy for him to do that as long as he let them know
if he was leaving the building, although he may have managed to creep up on one or two of them a few times.
In his time at The Ferns the care given to Dad was excellent and I had no qualms about leaving him in their excellent care.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.692)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.692) out of 10 for The Ferns Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.692 for The Ferns Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (195 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 250 Ratings = 4.692
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Ferns Care Home is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 37 registered maximum number of service users is 7.4, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
