I have found The Ferns very homely for my Grandma. The Ferns is comfortable for my Grandma. The staff work very hard at looking after the residents and are very attentive to them. There is a high standard of care at The Ferns. My Grandma is well settled at The Ferns and especially enjoys the lovely
garden where she can sit outside. Overall, I am impressed with The Ferns. My Grandma has been at The Ferns for 5 weeks and we are more than happy for her to stay long term.

Today was such a sad day as my dad who was a resident here for last 18mths with dementia had to move on to a Nursing Home. During dads time here his care and communication from staff has been fantastic. He was treated with loving care, dignity and respect. He settled straight away and made new friends
and loved the staff. Staff are all lovely, friendly and very welcoming to all families. We are all going to miss Abbotsfield and the staff so much. Thank you all for everything you do. Such a fantastic, hard working, caring team.

My mum was attacked my a male dementia patient in November he thought he was a boxer he bust her nose punched her in the head several times, back and her chest, when the deputy manager rang me she seemed far more concerned about him than my own mum ,when my husband went to the home and asked what had
happened she said you tell me and waved her hands in the air.

The communication between the home and myself is poor, despite events affecting my loved one. There are too few experienced carers and too many who don't have a clue. This care home is not a patch on the previous owner's management of it. It needs to improve (care, not appearance!)
Reply from Kim Rogerson, Director at The Ferns Care Home

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're truly sorry to hear that you feel communication hasn't met your expectations. Please know that we genuinely care about your experience and your relative's wellbeing. Our team has made several efforts to arrange a meeting with you, as we would really value the opportunity to listen and work through any concerns together. In previous conversations, you've shared positive comments, which we've appreciated - but we want to ensure you feel fully supported. The team at The Ferns includes a mix of experienced carers and newer staff, all of whom are supported through training and close supervision. We are committed to continuous improvement and are proud of the dedication our staff show each day.We would be very grateful if you would consider a meeting so we can better understand your concerns and move forward positively, together. My mother was a resident here from May 2023 until her death in January 2025. The care she received from the staff was second to none, especially during the last 2 months of her life when she required palliative end-of-life care. Two sensor staff and three other staff came to her funeral church service.
They showed my mam and our family genuine care and support, as did the local manager at the home. Nothing was too much trouble.

I am delighted with the level of care and attention which is now being given to my friend, who has vascular dementia, very little vision and various mobility issues. There was an initial mistake when his mobile phone was put through the washing machine and we needed to replace it, but other than that
our experience has been very good.
When he was in his own home, with carers going in three times a day, there were times when he had to wait 7 hours between meals, irregular medicine administration and medical care. We were all concerned when he fell four times in 10 days and this precipitated the need for him to move and get better 24 -hour care.
We chose the right place. As a visitor now, rather than his carer, I am greeted with big smiles from the staff, there is a calm, relaxed atmosphere and my friend is getting used to his new home. Regular meals, regular medication, regular medical care, our worries about him falling are now gone as there is always someone nearby, night and day.

When I visit my friend's Mum, I'm always made welcome by the staff. So do feel it's very homely. There's a very good atmosphere and if I want to take my friend's mum into the garden. It's never a bother for staff to go get the wheelchair and make sure the resident is warm enough.
Always a pleasure

I visit my neighbour every week and she looks forward to me coming. She has been in Croft Avenue for a year now. She is so settled and calls it her home. The staff are absoulutley wonderful with all the clients, the activities are brilliant and my neighbour joins in with them all, she helps outside
in the garden area, she has always been active at home in the garden and this is lovely to see. Being a former carer myself, I would definately recommend this care home, and if and when my situation changes, this would be my preffered choice for a care home.

Absolutely fantastic care home. The staff are amazing. Lots of activities for the residents, good food and clean rooms. Since my friend moved in she has found a new lease of life.
