Both my mum and dad moved into Southernwood House last November. Both had been living locally at home. My mum has been admitted to hospital so this was an emergency situation for my dad who couldn’t cope at home. The staff at the care home supported not just my parents but for me and my family through
this challenging time. Later mum joined dad and they spent the last few months of mums life enjoying each other and more relaxed than they had been for ages now they were comfortable and so well looked after. Dad’s health has improved more than we thought possible. And we believe they have been happy. Dad has a tv in his room so he has a personal space as well as new friends. The staff are very patient and caring.
Reply from Bethany Ward, Manager at Southernwood HouseAh Julia, thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. Please accept my apologies for only now having access to this system and being able to reply. It has been a pleasure to be involved in the care of your parents. Best wishes

My wife and I came to visit my mother on 22nd June we are from out of the area, so thought best to ring as we got nearer to check if it was ok to just turn up and also to bring our dog in. Staff were really friendly and welcoming, we were told the residents would love our small dog and yes please bring
it in. We found the place very clean and tidy, the building is a little tired due to its age. My mum was sitting chatting to someone and we were surprised she recognised us ( she hadn't at my brothers) interaction making her happy!!
We did find one of the staff to be very rude which we reported to the manager and she apologised and promised to deal with. The Manager said this is their home and we come here to work and should respect that.
It was lovely to watch how the staff help everyone and we would happily recommend this care home.

Dad was returned to Southernwood House after a short spell in hospital.
This was for palliative care as unfortunately nothing more could be done for him medically.
The staff welcomed him "home" and looked after him as if he were their own father.
Nothing was too much trouble for them.
Not only
did they look after Dad but also supported his family through this difficult time.

My mother was transferred from the hospital for respite.
She stayed here for 7 weeks.
During that time the care given by all the staff was excellent.
All the staff are very friendly, helpful and caring.
As a family, we were sceptical about care homes, but this has happily changed our opinions.
Reply from Bob Dhaliwal, Director at Southernwood HouseDear John, thank you for your review, the care and management team will sure appreciate your kind words, these reviews always provide a great morale boost for the hard work and dedication the care team put into their work at Southernwood House.

Placing mum into respite care whilst dad was poorly, it was quite traumatic, but all the management and staff welcomed mum and all of us, giving us great comfort and reassurance for her safety, wellbeing and general comfort.
The support offered to mum and our family has been first class, so much so
that we are hoping we can get mum into long-term care at this small and well-run establishment.
Mum (who has Dementia) has settled really well, this, we believe is down to a genuine caring attitude by all staff towards mums specific and personal needs. She is happy.
Reply from Bob Dhaliwal, Director at Southernwood HouseDear Paul,
Thank you for your review, the care team and management appreciate your kind words of support and acknowledgement of the service level. We will strive to ensure that your mum continues to receive the very best of care and support for her long-term care and well-being.

I am extremely pleased with every aspect of care which my mother receives at Southernwood House. All the staff are very kind, caring and friendly, whilst displaying the utmost professionalism at all times. My mother is now nearly 99 years old and has lived at the home for about 3 years. Her needs are
very well catered for in every way and she is always treated with kindness and respect for her dignity. The meals provided always look delicious and there is a varied menu for dinner and tea from which to choose every day. My mother is very well looked after and is happy and settled, which gives me much peace of mind. I am very grateful indeed to the manager and all the staff for everything they do. I would not hesitate to recommend Southernwood House to others.

On bringing my father-in- law to the care home in an emergency, due to my mother-in-law taken to hospital we arrived and were met by two friendly carers and this continued, on arrival we were asked to give details on our father-in-law and we left clothes for him (we were not told to write in them etc,
due to this being an emergency) as well as my husband and my mother spending all day at Pilgrim hospital from 11 am till late, toilet in room had damaged light switch, Carer tried to rectify and apologised for the maintenance people not coming out.
We left at 10.30pm and very happy.
Until my father was sent to another care home two days later, we found he had no sock on his feet and just shoes and clothes missing, the follow up on finding the clothes was disarray and one didn't know what the other was doing. My husband was very anxious. Outcome half have been sent back and due to not being named as not told and an emergency, we will not get reimbursed for the two remaining missing.
Reply from Lydia Snape, PA to Managing Director at Southernwood HouseWellbeing Care Group takes all complaints very seriously, therefore it is disappointing that you felt the need to rate the care for the 3 Days that your father was in our care as poor, and despite highlighting that the actual care provided by the dedicated care staff was good. The missing clothing that you have mentioned had all been dealt with and sent. It is therefore very unfortunate that you have decided to utilise a review to highlight an issue which we had thought had been dealt with. These reviews have an impact on our care and management team, who I believe on this occasion have been rated unfairly on the actual quality of care that had been delivered.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.057)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.057) out of 10 for Southernwood House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.507 for Southernwood House is calculated as follows: ( (43 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 69 Ratings = 4.507
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.55 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Southernwood House is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 = 3.55
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 28 registered maximum number of service users is 5.6, which has been reached with 6 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
