Review from Ian M (Grandson of Resident) published on 7 July 2026 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

My grandmother is thriving in this home, she is really happy. The entertainment is varied and she looks forward to the activities to the point of ignoring us if we call and there is something planned. The food is great and appetising, with meals that she would have prepared herself over the years, resulting in her putting on weight since living at Lear House which given her advanced age was a welcome surprise. The staff are lovely, always visible, respectful and communication is good, any concerns however small are addressed straight away. The home is clean and the gardens well kept. One thing I really like is the consistency with staff, meaning that although my grandmother has dementia, she has familiar faces around her every day. I would have no hesitation recommending this home to others looking for somewhere for a family member to live.

My sister has been a resident for five years. Lear House is home for her in every way. She is comfortable, she is well looked after, and above all, she is safe and happy. The activities are something she loves, and she joins in wholeheartedly. The staff do all they can to encourage residents and to give them confidence; the food is really good. I am happy to recommend Lear House to those who are looking for a care home either for themselves or next of kin.

My mum has been resident at Lear House for over 2 years and I continue to be extremely happy with her care there.
Staff are kind, caring, attentive, vigilant and responsive to her needs and preferences.
They respond quickly and consistently when she requests help but respect her need for independence.
Communication with relatives is excellent. During my mum's recent spell of illness I was kept constantly up to date by staff and was totally confident and reassured that she was receiving the very best care, making a full recovery.
As a visitor I am treated with kindness and always made to feel welcome.
The environment is homely and spotlessly clean, and the food is outstanding. Activities are varied, interesting, stimulating and well attended. Garden is a well- maintained haven.
The care manager is kind, extremely competent, knowledgeable and always ready to provide assistance and information.

In all, Lear House is everything you would hope a care home for your relative would be.

My volunteer role is that of Readedr Leader every fortnight. This involves reading selected poetry, songs and other forms of prose to a group of up to 12 residents. I liaise with Helen the activities co ordinator. Helen has proved to be a great source of support to me. She is always welcoming, has a great way of putting me at ease and has a good sense of humour. I have observed her interaction with the residents who are encouraged to engage robustly. There are usual plenty of smiles and goid humour as activities are happening.

Thank you.

Lovely care home with friendly staff who know each resident and their individual needs really well. Always spotlessly clean. The food looks and smells lovely and is cooked on the premises. The daily activities/entertainment is varied and much appreciated by residents (and visitors!).

Would be happy to live there myself!

After 9 months of rapid deterioration, Mum moved into Lear House in August 2025. It was the best decision we could have made for her. All the staff are welcoming, friendly, helpful, caring, knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble. The communication from staff is excellent, I feel well informed of anything and everything that happens regarding Mum. The food served is all home-made and has a lovely varied menu. They have a full-time Activities Manager who ensures that the weekly program is jam-packed and Mum loves getting involved. Her bedroom is bright and sunny with a huge window overlooking the garden, she has some of her own furniture and many personal ornaments/photos/pictures. The en-suite bathroom is great too. Lear House has a lovely, welcoming and homely feel to it, the communal areas are nicely decorated and always clean. I would recommend it to anybody.

My dad has been in Lear House since late 2023. The care he has received has been outstanding and I'm sure without it , he wouldn't be with us today . The staff are friendly and professional and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Lear house to anyone who was interested.

My mum has been a resident since July 2020.
My mum is very happy here in Lear House. I find the staff to be attentive and caring. I attend the home regularly and see how the staff interact so well with all the residents. The activities and music are excellent and thoroughly enjoyed by my mum. The staff and the management keep me updated on everything involving my mum and I can also access updates online. This is very reassuring.
The home accommodates access to church services for my mum each week which means a lot to her.
The food is excellent and there is plenty of choice and my mum receives a weekly menu.
My mums room and communal areas are spotless.
The home has been excellent when my mum has had a few hospital admissions and she has been able to be discharged quickly and recover quickly in Lear house as the care has been second to none in getting her back to her usual self.

The quality of life my mum has had since becoming a resident is beyond what I could have hoped for.

My grandmother is extremely happy and well cared for at Lear House. There are lots of activities for the residents and the staff genuinely care.

My only concern is that sometimes medical information is not passed over or there are occasions when a fall is not notified.

The staff at Lear House are consistently supportive, helpful, friendly, and good-humoured. They never hesitate to provide assistance, advice, or reassurance whenever it is needed.
Communication between the home and myself has been excellent, and I always feel well-informed about my mum's wellbeing. I have complete confidence that she is well cared for. The staff take real responsibility in looking after her needs and, even when she is reluctant at times, they handle situations with patience and professionalism.
The daily activities and entertainment provided during the week are fantastic and clearly well thought out. I also really appreciate the regular social media updates, which are reassuring and help me feel connected to what she is doing day to day.

Overall, I am constantly reassured that my mum is happy, safe, and well looked after.

Overall Experience
Mum chose Lear House about 3 months ago and has a large, bright, en-suite room with 3 call buttons and some of her own furniture, fan and pictures. It is accessed via a stairlift. The house has a relaxed, friendly and homely atmosphere. Outside access is rather steep but driving to the door for pick-up/drop-off is possible. Secure entry is gained via a doorbell.
Mum's wish for privacy and to eat in her room has been fulfilled without pressure. The care staff are kind, cheerful, encouraging and respectful. All staff and the manager are helpful and friendly to me. Her laundry is done beautifully and regularly. The home-cooked food is very good, with a varied menu and choices. The excellent Activities Co-ordinator runs a varied programme of activities including residents' meetings for comments and suggestions. The gardens around the house, one accessed via a lift, are lovely and there are some garden activities.

Things I would like to see: daily exercises/pilates; call pendants; air con.

My mum moved to Lear House 4 months ago. Her room is large and bright, and the general environment is friendly, relaxed, clean and homely. The care staff are respectful and kind and do their best to respond to Mum's needs. The care manager and senior staff are always responsive and helpful if I need to discuss anything with them. The food is plentiful, of good quality and varied. Residents are provided with a weekly menu. Most residents have their meals in the dining room but Mum's preference for eating in her own room is honoured. The activities programme is excellent and residents are encouraged to join in, but equally, they don't have pressure put on them to join in if they don't wish to. There is a monthly residents' forum at which residents can make suggestions regarding the provision at Lear House. I am pleased with the choice of Lear House for my mum and feel that the kind and flexible approach enables residents' individual needs and preferences to be met.

This is an excellent care home. The level of care given to the residents is of a very high standard. There are structures in place to raise issues and concerns regarding our relative, which are always acted upon. The care manager and the general manager are always approachable and make themselves available. They are proactive in their care as well and highlight issues appropriately. In essence they not only provide reassurance for the residents, they negate anxiety for the relatives and am very confident she is in a safe and caring environment. The facilities are first-class. The buildings, good etc are of a very high standard but it is the staff who make it what it is, from the top manager to all staff.

Mum is well cared for. She has benefitted from having 24-hour care, daily routines and emotional support from fellow users and staff.
As Mum has taken a while to settle, she has been encouraged to join in the organised activities and now seems to have made some friends and has formed relationships with staff.

Family and friends are made to feel welcome and encouraged to join in with activities. The activities coordinator provides a wide variety of stimulating activities which are well attended and good fun. It's both reassuring and a pleasure to see so many users enjoying themselves.

My mother arrived in August 2022. We anticipated her being at Lear House for no more than 6 months. After she settled in she had a new lease of life enjoying all the activities (except the French lessons). Towards the end of her life, the staff were kind and considerate towards my mother right up to the end. I would say on behalf of my sisters and myself Lear House was an excellent choice for my mother. The staff gave her an additional 2 years of life which were enjoyed by mother.

As a family, we have been very impressed with the scale of the home and the continuity of the staff which means mum has got to know them all and similarly the small, in her eyes manageable, number of residents.
The quality of care and attentiveness is good and the ethos is that this is your home, visitors always feel welcome and choices are given eg sometimes having a meal in your room. That feeling of choice is important to Mum.

An excellent feature is the in-house entertainment (most afternoons) and the involvement in what's going on in the world eg D Day (nationally), a talk on Hilbre Island (local interest).

The people who provide the menus and meals need to talk to the residents and devise a menu that is appropriate, nutritious and tasty. The nutrition and hydration side of care could be much improved.
