Comfort House is a residential care home situated in a housing estate in Newcastle, close to shops and services. It also has good public transport links.

Part of a friendly, welcoming community, Comfort House has a relaxed and happy atmosphere where residents can feel comfortable and at home. The large bedrooms all have ensuite shower facilities and there are a number of communal areas for the residents.

The dedicated and compassionate staff team has a low turnover, enabling them to build strong relationships with the residents.

Various activities and events are offered at Comfort House to encourage residents to stay alert and engaged. The home has visiting entertainers, arts and crafts sessions, film showings and stimulating activities to suit individuals needs. It is also involved in the Hen Power project and the home has three chickens which the residents enjoy looking after.

Comfort House has a number of informal links with the local community as many residents are local to the area. They still enjoy going to the shops and pub and being part of the wider community.

The staff do everything they can to look after their residents, very caring and always something going on. Due to the pandemic, there was mostly no visiting, but once it was allowed, they went out of their way to arrange their garden for safe visits. I am able to ring up to chat with my mam, and she
loves that she can see me on the screen. They have taken her to dental appointments and called in the doctor when needed. I am always given excellent feedback on what is happening with her care. Sadly my dad passed away in November, and the staff told my mam the sad news and have since been caring for her emotional feelings, with great empathy. In December 2O20, I finally got in to see my mam, and it was amazing! They have been so careful about keeping the residents safe from Covid, and all of the staff I have spoken to or met have been very friendly, helpful and caring. My mam is always singing their praises.
Well done, Comfort House!

My dad was taken in on New Year’s Eve. I've never been so heartbroken in all my life. The staff that welcomed us at the entrance were unbelievable, they had me convinced within minutes they would take good care of him and us. We are now into the 5th week and I can honestly say from the bottom of my
heart I’ve seen an unbelievable change in my dad, he’s back to his old cheeky self when we FaceTime him or vice versa. He has the staff laughing at him and the staff are so genuinely caring towards him. I would personally like to thank the management team and their staff for all their hard work and effort and care they have shown my dad and my family as a whole, thank you very much Comfort House for everything.

Comfort House offers a home from home environment. Staff are very welcoming friendly and always go the extra mile to make sure needs are met. I would definitely recommend Comfort House to friends or family who require respite care or even long term.

My mam has been in Comfort House for over 4 years and during this time there have been some ups and downs but now I feel I must congratulate the staff for their care of my mam. Mam has had a difficult time over the last 12 months and the management arranged for one to one care for her which is great.
She seems really happy now and, although I can’t see her as I used to, she is safe in their hands. During this difficult time of COVID 19, the staff have worked to keep things ticking over and had themed parties, etc putting themselves at risk probably. I really can’t imagine how they must have felt at the height of the pandemic, but managed to keep the home COVID free.
Mam is 104 this month and even though we won’t be able to celebrate with her I know the staff will make it a special day for her.
Keep up the good work.

I felt I needed to give an update.
As I live abroad, my visits with my mum are limited. I visited in December, it was a delight to walk into Comfort House. The manager and staff had certainly pulled out all the stops to make the lounge and common areas very festive. Christmas trees and decorations
filled the rooms and it certainly put a smile on my grandchildren’s faces. I’m sure the residents appreciated the efforts the staff made!
I visited my mum last week, but unfortunately, she was taken into hospital. The deputy manager rang to inform me of mum’s situation, her professionalism and handling of mum’s situation helped very much to put my mind at rest.
The care, compassion, professionalism and help given by all the staff is to be praised. I was very happy when mum was discharged from hospital and returned to Comfort House, as I knew she would get the care and attention needed. They go above and beyond their duties to make the residents feel as comfortable as possible!

I cannot thank the lovely, hardworking staff enough for the excellent care and support they have given mam these last two years she has been resident here. There has been such hard work by all members of staff to ensure all residents are happy and the social media page is amazing as I am able to keep
up to date with all the activities on offer, from painting, cookery, gardening, singing, playing games, the list is endless. It’s only a shame that all relatives feel unable to participate in family events, like the lovely end of summer garden party, as the staff throw their hearts and souls into organising such events, to benefit the residents. Thank you so much Comfort.

My mother moved into Comfort House on 16.9.19 after a two-week stay in hospital suffering from dementia. She was very confused and agitated. I was given seven days to find a residential care place. The lady from Comfort House visited the hospital to assess and was fabulous. All the staff at Comfort
House have been brilliant at settling in and looking after this 93-year-old lady. The staff have been wonderful to me and my family. It is a relief that she is at Comfort House.

Since Comfort House has been under new management it has greatly improved in all areas. The staff are lovely and friendly and make you feel welcome. I have no worries regarding my dad's care as he always looks tidy and the staff take special care with his personal care and meet his needs when required.
Thank you Comfort House.

Comfort House provides a clean comfortable safe environment for our mother. Carers are professional and very respectful to residents and family alike. They have provided extra support tour mother at times of personal bereavement. Personal items are kept well laundered and she is always well dressed.
The redecoration recently carried out has brought a more modern look to the building.

Used a number of times over the last three years for respite care for my father. Always found them to be accommodating and friendly to deal with when making bookings and queries. Staff appear friendly. On a negative - Clothes always seem to go missing during a stay, glasses too. Had booked my father
to stay this Christmas - made the provisional booking in September. However, received a letter on the 8th December informing me that due to staff shortages he could not stay. It has left us in a difficult situation and am currently trying to find another provider. I would not trust them again with respite care.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.554)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.554) out of 10 for Comfort House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.654 for Comfort House is calculated as follows: ( (80 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.654
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Comfort House is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
