Overview

The Review Score of 8.8 (maximum of 10) for Kirklands is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Kirklands in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.537 for Kirklands is calculated as follows: ( (60 Excellents x 5) + (46 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 108 Ratings = 4.537

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.25 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Kirklands is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 3.75

    2. Target of 8 positive Reviews (40 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 4 Reviews ÷ 8 Target = 0.500

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

8.8 Kirklands has a Review Score of 8.8 (8.787) from 9 Reviews

My mother died in November a few days short of her 99th birthday having been resident at Kirklands since suffering a stroke some 3 1/2 years ago. I must express my sincere thanks for the wonderful way the staff looked after my mum throughout her stay at Kirklands I have nothing but praise for the way she was treated.
In total, my mother was a resident of Anchor for over 33 years from 1984, at a number of other homes, before moving to Kirklands in 2014.

Mother well cared for, well fed and kept warm. Involved in activities but carers willing to transfer to a motorised wheelchair when I take it in weekly to take her to the farm.

The staff are very friendly and attentive to my father's needs. He has commented that he is very well looked after here.
Everyone treats him with dignity and respect, allowing him to make the choices he would at home and the food is excellent.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the care home to a prospective resident.

My mum settled in very quickly and the friendly and attentive staff no doubt helped in this process. The home is well maintained, the food is excellent and the whole atmosphere is homely and welcoming. In the words of mum "What's not to like". Knowing mum is safe, cared for and content is a great comfort to her family.

I find the staff pleasant, helpful and caring. The safety of the residents is given priority and the meals provided are very good. There is a good variety of activities.

The care home is very good but often understaffed, to the cleaners, carers and activity co-ordinators. They all try to do the best they can. Some of the food could be better for old people carrot and orange soup isn't what they want, and bacon that was served the other week was fatty and dry and hard, I couldn't attempt to eat it even with a full set of teeth.
If the staff had more time to spend with the residents as they all have different personalities and needs and it takes time.

Kathryn West, District Manager at Kirklands responded to this review on 18 Aug 2016:

Thank you for your comments, we appreciate your feedback. Our catering team regularly review our menus and carrot and orange soup remains a popular choice for many residents, with an alternative choice always available. Staffing levels are regularly reviewed to make sure they meet the needs of the residents living in the home.

My sister is now resident in Kirklands. She is happy and enjoys her experiences in care. The staff are cheerful and exceedingly helpful. The atmosphere in the home is very relaxed and if noisy at times this is the result of "banter" between staff and residents. There is no "institutional" feeling about the home.
