The care home is very good but often understaffed, to the cleaners, carers and activity co-ordinators. They all try to do the best they can. Some of the food could be better for old people carrot and orange soup isn't what they want, and bacon that was served the other week was fatty and dry and hard,
I couldn't attempt to eat it even with a full set of teeth.
If the staff had more time to spend with the residents as they all have different personalities and needs and it takes time.
Reply from Kathryn West, District Manager at Kirklands Care Home

Thank you for your comments, we appreciate your feedback. Our catering team regularly review our menus and carrot and orange soup remains a popular choice for many residents, with an alternative choice always available. Staffing levels are regularly reviewed to make sure they meet the needs of the residents living in the home.

I find the staff pleasant, helpful and caring. The safety of the residents is given priority and the meals provided are very good. There is a good variety of activities.

My sister is now resident in Kirklands. She is happy and enjoys her experiences in care. The staff are cheerful and exceedingly helpful. The atmosphere in the home is very relaxed and if noisy at times this is the result of "banter" between staff and residents. There is no "institutional" feeling about
the home.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.5 (8.477) out of 10 for Kirklands Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.8 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.667 for Kirklands Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (37 Excellents x 5) + (6 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 48 Ratings = 4.667
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.81 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Kirklands Care Home is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 46 registered maximum number of service users is 9.2. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.2 = 0.435
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Operations Manager Joined: 2021

I started my career in care as a Health Care Assistant and have progressed and worked my way up through the Health and Social Care Industry, working across many services such as mental health, learning disability, children's services and dementia nursing, reaching the position of Area Manager.

In 2021, I joined Kirklands Care as their Operations Manager, overseeing all of their care homes. Kirklands Care is a family-run business that shares my own beliefs about care and that the residents' care is of utmost priority, and this, for me, comes first. My love of spending time with the residents shines through my work, hearing their stories and having the ability to make a difference in their lives. Every resident I care for is treated how I would expect my family member to be cared for, which for me is with love, dignity and respect. My role allows me to work with families to take the pressure off whilst allowing them to feel their loved one is in a suitable environment, is safe and cared for.

I started my career as a Support Worker for individuals with learning disabilities and complex needs, and it was there that my passion for care truly began. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to develop my knowledge and experience within the health and social care sector, managing multiple services simultaneously including EMI, mental health, supported living, behavioural complex units, elderly care and outreach services.

These experiences have shaped the leader I am today and given me a real understanding of the importance of person centred care at every level.

As Area Manager for Kirklands Care Group, I’m proud to support our homes across Cumbria. I value people and I firmly believe that everyone’s voice matters and deserves to be heard. My goal is to ensure our residents receive the highest standard of care while creating teams who feel supported, appreciated and proud of the work they do.

I began my career in care over 21 years ago after qualifying as a nursery nurse. I soon realised that I wanted to give more and make a real difference to people’s lives and that’s when I found my true calling in care.

Originally from Liverpool, I have strong connections with Cumbria, having lived here for ten years. Throughout my career, I’ve worked my way through various roles from Carer and Senior, to Team Leader, Unit Manager, and Deputy before completing my Level 5 qualification and taking on the rewarding role of Home Manager.

Care is my vocation. I’m passionate about ensuring our residents receive the very best care. Care that’s delivered with dignity, respect, and genuine warmth. I take great pride in supporting both our residents and staff and in creating a home where everyone feels valued, supported, and truly cared for.
