Having been unexpectedly admitted to hospital, and then discharged in intermediate care, I found my room comfortable, food acceptable and overall care welcome and acceptable if a little overbearing for understandable reasons. The en-suite bathroom was, however, out of order.
Reply from Kim Richardson, Home Manager at Astor Court

Thank you for your review. My apologies that the toilet was not functioning at that time, this has now been addressed. Please feel free to contact me about any other issues, as any feedback is appreciated on ways we can improve. I will pass on your comments to the wider team, as I am pleased we are working well to support all residents return home after their hospital stay, thank you.

My mum has been at Astor court for over a year now.
The most positive thing about astor court is the care staff, the majority are caring, kind, thoughtful and always go the extra mile. The most negative would be that there is no safe outside space for dementia patients, there is space that could
be utilised but it isn't safe and and it's such a shame it can't be used for fresh air and vitamin D, some activities outside would be lovely. We know its very important to dementia patients, my mum has trouble sleeping and more natural sunlight I feel would benefit this.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we appreciate your thoughts and are happy to hear that our care meets your expectations, we will pass this on to the team as they will appreciate this. In regards to the garden, we are currently looking into this as we would like to create a welcoming outdoor area for the people living with us."

I am the wife of the grandson of the resident, the care has been amazing at this service so far, and have done everything to get my husband's grandmother out of hospital. The care staff and management have been fantastic and are always happy to help.
So far we cannot fault the service and those who
work there, other residents also look content within the unit we visit.
Reply from Jill, Regional Director at Astor Court

I cannot fault the staff at Astor Court. They were without fail very attentive, caring and respectful to my mum, demonstrating love and genuine interest in her and in her wellbeing. I also benefited greatly from their friendship and concern. The only downside during Mum's 9 week stay was that the building
was in complete disarray with significant work being carried out in the entrance, communal areas and corridors. This at times felt unsafe for residents and visitors and of course meant there was a great deal of dust and disruption. Despite all this the staff carried on working cheerfully and relentlessly. You are all wonderful - thank you!

Outstanding ongoing care for my father who has a lot of complex care needs. His progress is significant and measurable. On the 29th of May, Astor Court provided space and catering for a small birthday gathering, resulting in a wonderful memorable day for my father's birthday.

My grandma entered the home for respite care after time in the hospital. I was so worried about her as this was a new experience for all of us. However, the staff at the home put me at ease instantly. Each time I visit, I can see clearly how well she is cared for, they obviously know her well and try
their best to make her happy; a job which is really not easy. All the staff work so hard and I appreciate all they do.

My husband stayed here for our 1st week's respite. The manager and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. I had good feedback when I rang to enquire about him, and this was most reassuring.
It is difficult to mark the options below fairly as I was unable to observe during the week.
What stood
out for me was that on leaving, many of the team came to say goodbye, and he appeared very happy and relaxed with all of them, and he made a point of thanking them. This indicates that he was well looked after.

My wife has been in the dementia area of Astor Court for 2 years past October. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to look after her (covid, ITU, ventilator). Luckily she was found a place at Astor Court by social services. It was a very difficult time during the lockdown period, but
through that time the management, staff, cleaners have been a constant source of the confidence I have in the ability of the staff to look after my wife and the rest of the residents.

I feel my mam is happy in her own little way. I have no worries about her care, the carers are all lovely. The only issue I have is, all her clothes and belongings go missing. I am constantly buying her new clothes. I put her name and room number in them but it makes no difference at all.

My mam has been in and out of hospital since February due to various illnesses and struggling at home. After speaking to a care team manager on the last ward he mentioned residential care as an option and I agreed, and as I live in Cramlington I wanted her to be closer to us for her grandchildren to
still see her as they have always had a close bond. I suggested Astor Court as it is a great home and because my mam is young, the home's age intake was welcoming. I also chose Astor Court because should my mam's need's change to nursing care, there is the lodge meaning it wouldn't be a huge upheaval for her and not as much stress for us because we won't have to search for an entirely new home. My mam has been there for two weeks respite initially and she has loved it and wants to stay. She has been so well cared for and feels safe there. Her wellbeing, mood, and diet have improved massively in these two weeks. All the staff are kind, understanding, and empathetic towards her.

I moved my mum to this home before last Christmas and I am extremely impressed with this home. The care is exceptional, the carers are brilliant, nothing is too much trouble, they are friendly, caring and cheerful. I did. Five stars are not enough for this place!

My sister got taken into care as she has Huntington's and Astor Court was a short term fix until we found her something else as she is only 49 and too young for this care home. But, apart from the fact it is full of old people, she loves it. She is well taken care of. All the staff are lovely and so
friendly. My sister gets on so well with the staff that she wants to take them all to her new care home.

Very happy with the care and attention lovely staff very kind and helpful. Very well fed lovely food I ate far too much, diet starts tomorrow. You hear so many bad reports about care homes but this is really good.
The one downside is there should be activities to pass the time other than that no qualms

Current Review Score: 8.3 (8.317)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.3 (8.317) out of 10 for Astor Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.236 for Astor Court is calculated as follows: ( (24 Excellents x 5) + (22 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 55 Ratings = 4.236
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.081 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Astor Court is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 43 registered maximum number of service users is 8.6. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.6 = 0.581
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
