A close friend of mine for whom I had power of attorney, spent the last three and a half years of her life at Penpergwm House. I have nothing but praise for the care, kindness and patient support that the staff offered her in what was a difficult phase of life for a fiercely independent woman. That
was a life-changing gift. Her room was small but had a beautiful view, and watching the hills, the sheep in the neighbouring field, and the ever-changing sky gave her great pleasure. Members of staff were always very welcoming and supportive to me as well, which was very much appreciated amidst the challenges of this period of life. Penpergwm House is very well managed by people who really care about the residents. It has a friendly and welcoming ethos, treating clients with dignity. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending it to others.

My uncle's home was at Penpergym House for over 3 years and I must say during his stay, the management and all the staff were amazing.
From the moment my uncle got up in the morning, the care, the food, the friendship and support were absolutely wonderful. I can only have positive thoughts about the
teams dedication and professionalism towards my uncle's care and would rate the family's experience as a five star plus.

Thank you so much to everyone at Penpergym House (including the chief and gardener)

My husband has vascular dementia and a bladder control problem as a result of a stroke. My husband attended Penpergwm House both as a day club member on a daily basis Monday to Friday and as a resident on Respite Care over some where in the region of seven stays, over the last three years.
It was
such a relief to find some where that suited his needs at that time. He was always made to feel very welcome and greeted with smiles and acknowledgement from all the staff. I always felt extremely happy with leaving him in their care. I was always kept informed of any changes in his behaviour, his likes and dislikes, any health problems and any on going issues with his bladder control.
It would have been wonderful if he could have stayed there on a permanent basis but unfortunately his needs increased so he had to be moved to a more secure residential home which is where he currently resides.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Penpergwm House & have done so both to friends & family

My Aunt has been a resident of Penpergwm House for two years and has been very well cared for in that time. She left hospital in October 2023 in a very sorry state and over the past two years Penpergwm staff have built my aunt back up to full strength and has only left their care in the past few weeks
as her care needs have moved from residential to nursing. We have always been happy to visit her and made to feel welcome by Georgie, Tracey and the team of excellent staff. The rooms and environment are comfortable and homely. The food has always been well received and my aunt has enjoyed the activities on offer here, with a particular mention to Lucy who went above and beyond to look after by aunt. We were very sorry she had to move but we were helped by Penpergwm with this transition and they even helped with transport to her new care home in the next county. We as a family can't speak highly enough of Penpergwm and all that it offers.

It has been a complete privilege to have known Penpergwm for the last six years. My mother was with them until the day she sadly died but the tender care and love we received from every member of staff was outstanding and exceptional.
Mummy was very lucky to have been able to live at Penpergwm-her
dementia had left her feeling very vulnerable and she soon felt much safer and was encouraged to think of Penpergwm as her home. She loved joining in with all the other residents and playing the piano daily which was her great love and everyone was so kind and friendly.I visited a lot and was always made to feel most welcome and part of the family!.
Her last few weeks were very hard but Penpergwm held our hands and led us so beautifully to her very peaceful ending in my arms. They cared for me as well as providing outstanding care for my mother-we will be forever in their debt and just want everyone to know how exceptional this wonderful home is-we are all so lucky to have it in Monmouthshire.

I can hardly find the words to describe how badly Penpergym House management let down my mother. Despite assessing her in the hospital and talking to family about her needs prior to her acceptance as a resident, we were phoned less than an hour after leaving her to say that they in their opinion my
mother would never settle there and we would need to move her ASAP. Not after a day, or a week, but an hour! It was truly heart breaking to try and let Mum know that yet again she would have to move to somewhere unfamiliar just because she had been upset on the first afternoon. Staff admitted that, had she been like she was on the second day there that first afternoon, we wouldn't have been put in that awful situation. It felt like management are cherry picking residents. Not one staff member came to say goodbye to her when we left a day later having no time to research other facilities. Poor behaviour from people who are supposed to care.
Reply from Georgie Llewelyn, General Manager at Penpergwm HouseAs a 'Residential' care home , we have limitations within that registration that we can't ignore. Sadly, sometimes a hospital visit is not able to give us as full an understanding of the person as required. It is vital for every client to be in the appropriate setting to receive the care and support they truly need to remain safe and to keep risks to a minimum so we do stand by our decision. We always try to sensitively respond to any given situation and we tried to keep you informed in order to support the transition for your mother, prioritising safety and logistics. We are of course extremely sorry for the upset the family is feeling and sincerely hope Mum is more satisfied with her current accommodation.

We have been delighted with the care my mother has received at Penpergwm House since she moved there in February 2025. She has vascular dementia but is always very peaceful and comfortable at PH. The staff are all very friendly and caring and we see the same faces all the time. She seems to enjoy all
the activities every day. Every time I visit she is talking to someone, whether it be another resident. a member of staff or a visitor.

As a family, we can't speak highly enough of Penpergwm House.
Going right back to our initial visits to assess the home's suitability for our mother's residence, to present day living at the home. The whole process has been a seamless one for my mother, who has taken to living at Penpergm House, as
well as could possibly have been expected. This is all we could wish for.
My mother has a full life, a great circle of friends, and lots of stimulating tasks, events, and activities each and every day. She takes great pleasure in telling everyone about the virtues of the home.
My mother can't say enough complimentary words about the attentive friendly staff and the great food that comes out of Penpergwm's kitchen.
We see all of this, on our visits and love the relaxed friendly atmosphere of the home.
For us, an afternoon in the gardens, or looking out on the gardens from her well-appointed room, knowing she is happy in the home is more than enough.
Reply from Georgie Llewelyn, General Manager at Penpergwm HouseThank you for sharing this - the importance of providing stimulation and enabling each Resident to be as active as they choose to be, is so important to us, and the effect it has is clear to see - so we are delighted you agree.

We as a family can't speak highly enough of Penpergwm. It was a difficult time moving our mother from home to Penpergwm and the help, encouragement and understanding the whole team gave us during this time was outstanding. Our mother has settled in so well and she is always telling us how wonderful
the staff are, how comfortable it is there and how safe she feels. We are so lucky to have found somewhere that takes the job of looking after the residents so seriously, with such care and attention. The staff are amazing, always ready with a smile and always cheerful. It is a wonderful atmosphere. From the moment we first walked through the door we knew we had found the right place for her. The follow-up care for us as a family is something that we will always be grateful for. We always feel welcome when we visit and are encouraged to contact them at any time with any questions we may have. Thank you to everyone at Penpergwm. You have changed everything for the family, and all for the good.

I've been given a lot of help moving into a new room to make me comfortable and to suit my needs.
My vegetarian and fish diet is very well provided for.
I am a dialysis patient and the house accommodates me with an early lunch before driving to dialysis and after providing supper later than the starting
time.
All the staff are extremely helpful, supportive and friendly.
There are the most beautiful rural views surrounding the house - excellent in so many ways.

From the very first impressions when my sister and I visited Penpergwm House, the home really stood out from all the others we saw. Then, while Mum was on the waiting list, the admin and management personnel were invariably pleasant and supportive.
Now that Mum is a resident, we've been constantly
impressed and pleased. Attention to detail and professionalism are evident, every single member of staff knows their stuff and says hello, and it's obvious that everyone works as part of a happy team. Nothing is too much trouble, no one is above doing anything they can to help, and it gives us enormous peace of mind to know that we've made the right choice for Mum and that she's being extremely well cared for. She tells us every day that all of the staff are wonderful, that the food is excellent, and that she is always made to feel at ease.
Excellent service deserves recognition and we are looking forward to our ongoing involvement with Penpergwm.

Wow, what a wonderful care home Penpergwm is and what wonderful people they are who work there. My Mum was resident for 7 months and she was looked after so well and with such care and commitment to her happiness and well-being. I have nothing negative to say about Penpergwm, I only have praise and
gratitude for every aspect of Mum's care while she was resident. Unfortunately, Mum has had to move to another care home - no fault of Penpergwm - because she now needs additional nursing care that is beyond the capacity of Penpergwm. Even though Mum left 2 months ago, Penpergwm have gone above and beyond to continue their support for her transition to an appropriate care home. I will always be grateful for all they did for my Mum and their support for me and the family. Thank you Penpergwm.
Reply from Georgie Llewelyn, General Manager at Penpergwm HouseIt's all about teamwork and communication and that involves the Resident, family as well as the team at PH - and although challenges arise your unwavering support and understanding makes all the difference.

At the grand old age of 100 years and 9 months dear Dad could no longer care for himself at home and Penpergwm House was his choice of where he’d like to live. He couldn’t have chosen a better place. He was welcomed into the “Penpergwm family” with kindness and incredible warmth and understanding that
the transition from one’s own home and all its familiarity is not an easy one especially with a fiercely independent man.
Dad celebrated his 101st birthday with the most beautiful afternoon tea to which his family and friends were invited. The cake was worthy of a first-prize win in any cake-baking/decorating competition as it truly represented Dad.
I would like to write much more but space is limited.
Thank you to each and every member of staff for the patience and genuine care they provide to the precious people who have the good fortune to live at Pempergwm House. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for the love and support you gave to me when Dad passed away.

I cannot speak highly enough of Penpergwm House, its staff and management. The caring environment is exemplified in every aspect of the care home’s practices. The kindness, respect, dignity and care afforded to our mother from every single team member has been outstanding. The personalisation of her
care plan has been exceptional with every aspect of her personality, likes, dislikes, etc catered for in a very person centred way. There was also an extraordinary welcome given to us as a family, helping us every step of the way in supporting our mother to settle and become part of the ‘Penpergwm family’ created so skilfully by the staff. We will forever be in their debt for the wonderful life our mother was given in their care.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.726) out of 10 for Penpergwm House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 17 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.826 for Penpergwm House is calculated as follows: ( (185 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 201 Ratings = 4.826
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Penpergwm House is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 37 registered maximum number of service users is 7.4, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
