Penpergwm House is a very special residential care home providing a superior choice of bespoke and quality services to cater for all the needs of an older person.

Set in the beautiful Usk valley near Abergavenny, Penpergwm House can offer a client a permanent home as well as the alternatives of respite (minimum of 2 weeks) or day care, for those who would prefer tailor-made support by the day. The Home can accommodate up to 34 residential clients and provide both comfort and surroundings that people can feel truly at home with. It is set in lovely gardens and very special surroundings and offers a very high standard of care and kindness in a friendly country house atmosphere.

Fabulous, caring staff are on hand to assist with each and every individual’s needs. The Home also has a wonderful, weekly programme of activities available and thoughtful and nourishing home-cooked food is one of the Home's main selling points. The ethos is to consistently provide lifelong-learning opportunities and entertaining events to appeal to all clients. Weekly trips out to a variety of places such as the theatre, tea dances, country gardens, churches and museums are also a vital part of life at Penpergwm House.

Full modern facilities include two lifts, WiFi throughout, two Reval baths as well as central heating and in every room emergency 24 hour call, wash hand basin, telephone and television provided. Many bedrooms also with en-suite facilities.

Penpergwm House is a private Residential home and our room rates depend on the type of room that is available at the time and vary between £900 - £1,300 per week. This price includes care, meals, activities a dedicated telephone line and WiFi access. Incidentals such as the hairdresser, chiropodist, toiletries, newspapers, magazines, escorting fees etc. that we may supply are charged to the resident. We are a residential provider so we do not have a Registered Nurse on site, however we are able to access any clinical support needed via the district nursing team and / or GP.


We have a variety of clients and there is a lively social aspect with lots of chatting and activity. I have attached this week’s programme and menu to give you an idea of happenings at Penpergwm.

My father attends the Day Care Service twice weekly and absolutely loves attending. I find the staff are always friendly and helpful. Dad even gets an all-singing, all-dancing bath there once a week which he looks forward to every week as he only has a disabled shower at home. He had attended for a
number of years prior to covid, unfortunately, due to restrictions has not been able to attend since March 2020. Since then, his mental health had deteriorated, not helped due to the lack of stimulation that he used to get in Penpergwm. Thankfully in July this year, Dad was able to start back to the Day Service again. Since then, his spirits have been uplifted, his mobility has improved and his overall well-being has gone to higher strengths. He is doing amazingly well - this is definitely a result of returning to the Day Care Service. He loves the engagement of the staff and all the activities that they provide, he also loves the good food that he is given, whilst there.

Due to my mum's rapid deterioration and with the care sector in such dire straits, living at home with me became untenable. I was forced into taking the dreaded decision of finding Mum a home. We are extremely lucky to have been told about Penpergwm House which from the day Mum visited for the first
time, she has been shown nothing less than utmost respect, care and love. A huge shout out to key carers who for me, the initial letting go of Mum, was terribly traumatic, worrying that she would be cared for like when she was home, have shown immense compassion, care and understanding and who are available at any time, offering advice and support to myself but especially to Mum. This same care and compassion is extended by all the staff. Penpergwm House, it is a privilege knowing that Mum is in the hands of a wonderful team. You truly are one big family embracing each and every resident.

Penpergwm House has been caring for my mother for over two and a half years. During that time, which of course included the Pandemic, her care has been outstanding in every respect. The home is run by a very dedicated team who make the relatives always feel welcome and valued and every little problem
is always dealt with very quickly and professionally. My mother was out for tea with me the other day and told her friends “I love coming out with the family but it is always nice when I am taken back home to Penpergwm “- I don’t think you could have any more praise than this, it says it all.

I have been a nurse for 20 years. This is not about me but I feel I should give my background to better understand that when I send my thanks and praise to Penpergwm House it is with experience. It is not just emotional but professional respect and gratitude I have.


It was a brief interlude in my

grandmother's long life and I truly cannot fault the care and attention she received while there. The care she had was faultless. Everyone was happy, from efficient, kind clerical staff to attentive, considerate care staff and everyone else who helps to run Penpergwm House. This was appreciated and made a real difference. I came every day in her last week. Each day she was clean, her bed comfortable, needs were met and people around were always willing to answer questions and talk if needed.


She died as peacefully as anyone can and I really feel she was very well cared for. So from someone who has seen care in all shapes and sizes. Some good, some bad, some in-between - thank you.

For my dad being a very independent and mentally astute 90-year-old, the thought of moving into residential care was very daunting. From our initial conversations over teams (due to Covid restrictions) with the manager and the team, taking my father on a virtual tour of the house, to follow up chats
on the phone to keep the engagement going prior to moving day made all the difference for Dad. Personalised care is very much top of mind and the staff really live and breath this. Nothing has been too much trouble and requests which may appear to be a bit “left field” have all been considered, and if best for Dad’s wellbeing, embraced. Dad was rather introverted in the early days but now he enjoys trips out with other residents, takes part in social activities including keep-fit exercises, and is fitter and more sociable than before! We know he is safe, happy, very well looked after and hopefully, in his forever home.

My mother has been a resident of Penpergwm House since June 2020. She was 98 years and needed full-time care after a stay in hospital. What a difference in my mother since she moved in! She has blossomed and rediscovered old talents which brought her joy before age-restricted her previously active life.
Penpergwm
is run incredibly efficiently by a dedicated team who remain totally committed to the residents’ well-being with a programme of various activities, exercise classes, and visiting entertainers. My mother enjoys the social life and the varied meals created by the excellent chef. There have not been any Covid cases due to the stringent precautions observed by the staff and all rooms are kept very clean.
My mother is flourishing and celebrated her 100th birthday in fine style due to great planning and thought by the staff. What more can I say except that we are very happy that mum is in such good hands.

Mum has been living at Penpergwm since March last year and I have been so very pleased with how well she has been looked after. The staff are so kind and friendly and there’s always a warm and comfortable atmosphere. The food is very good and very well presented- tea and biscuits are always on offer!
The home itself is very comfortable and well presented, with beautiful gardens. The management and staff have done a terrific job in keeping the residents safe, well and happy through these difficult times. I can’t thank them enough.

My Father was a resident at Penpergwm House for his last 18 months. They were happy times for him. The standard of care given by the staff was extremely high. The atmosphere in the home was always welcoming and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The food served was of a high standard
with a choice for residents to choose at each meal. The property was always well maintained with a homely feel. I was always kept informed of my Fathers care and involved in decision making. I cannot praise Penpergwm House enough and would endorse any recommendation. Thank you Penpergwm

Our mother has lived at Penpergwm House since March this year and she is always very positive about the care she receives when we speak to her on skype or at the specially organised garden visits. Before lockdown, we were able to visit her in the home and everywhere was beautifully kept, clean and inviting-a
truly exceptional environment. The staff are very kind and compassionate and go above and beyond to help our mother feel relaxed and happy. They take great care in finding out what makes her feel comfortable and tune into her individual needs wonderfully. She loves the meals and looks so well. There are so many activities on offer and we're really happy to see photos on the blog to show that she joins in with some of them which is lovely to see. Through this difficult time, all the staff have worked tirelessly to keep the residents feeling calm and secure, and I am so grateful for their dedication, commitment and loving-kindness.

My Mum has been a resident at Penpergwm House for almost 6 years. From the moment my brothers and I stepped over the threshold, we knew that Mum would be happy, safe and loved there.
The staff are second to none. They make this Residential Home a true home from home and during this pandemic, they
have been even more than their job descriptions, they have been Mum’s family. I for one, can’t thank them enough.
From the beautifully tended gardens, the cleanliness of the comfortable rooms, the nutritious and delicious meals, the highly imaginative and entertaining events, the atmosphere and ethos of the home, the love and care shown to Mum (and the reciprocated love is reflected back in Mum’s face) - I can’t fault it. We have followed this on the blog which is constantly updated with wonderful photos and videos.
I am so very pleased that Mum lives here and could not recommend Penpergwm House highly enough for anyone’s loved one.

My dad, now aged 87, came to live at Penpergwm House in September 2018 on a trial basis after a spell in hospital. His home living arrangements had become very difficult and his health had deteriorated very badly. Since moving in he has never looked back and I have nothing but praise for the standards
of care he receives. From wonderful fresh, homecooked food for every meal, a wonderful entertainment and activities programme, beautifully kept grounds and interiors and most all an amazing team of friendly, caring and very professional staff. My Dad is happy, clean, well-fed and very content, he tells us constantly how much he likes it there. Well done Penpergwm, you have got it right. When I am old and unable to care for myself I want to live somewhere as good as this please.

Mum is in her 80's and suffered terrible anxiety issues. We moved her from a local care home to Penpergwm House due to the obvious decline in both her physical and mental health while there. Due to the absolutely wonderful care and attention Mum has received at Penpergwm House, she has become a different
person. She now mixes with other residents, loves the keep fit exercises, the music sessions, and all the other activities that have brought her out of her shell. The staff are so polite and professional and always have time to talk when we have any questions. The carers are so unbelievably warm and understanding that we both feel humble when we meet them. Mum has a phone in her room and we call her daily. She constantly tells us how wonderful both the food is (which we have found to be as good as the finest restaurants) and that she is at last able to make new friends. Thank you so much all of you at Penpergwm House for at last making Mum happy.

My mother received excellent care during her stay of over 3 years. She was always treated with dignity and respect and her wishes adhered to. The staff are extremely kind and caring with cheerful demeanour.
They enabled my mother, in effect, to die at home which is a great gift to her and her family.
They looked after us as well as her.

Our 88-year-old mother was moderately demented and no longer able to care for herself in sheltered accommodation. We looked at 7 or 8 care homes in the area before finding Penpergwm. Although many of them had an impressive caring ethos Penpergwm stood out as being head and shoulders above the rest.
Although Mum was only there for 4 months before she passed away everyone treated her and us with kindness and respect. Nothing was too much trouble and we felt completely confident that she was in safe hands. They have a good relationship with the local GP and other healthcare professionals. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

My octogenarian mother made the personal choice to move to somewhere she could "be looked after" a few years ago. Penpergwm was recommended to us by one of her doctors at the time. Since then, Mum has made friends with many other residents and a good many of the staff.


The care staff are superb,

nothing being too much trouble, from meals in her room on days when Mum isn't feeling so energetic, to making bath-time an occasion of fun and comfort (aromatherapy and hydrotherapy included).


The activities programme is rich and varied, from outings and painting sessions through to card nights, films, documentaries and wine-tastings. Opportunities to enjoy listening to good music, and participating in singing activities are among the real highlights Mum enjoys.


Friendly, dedicated visiting specialists offer a wide range of additional services and help, from physiotherapy and chiropody through to hairdressing. Residents' family members are made welcome at meal times.

My mother attends Penpergwm for the day twice a week. She is picked up and taken home at the end of the day. Mum looks forward to her days there, she particularly enjoys the organised activities, the garden and trips out. I am grateful for the respite, as it gives me a couple of days a week I can relax
in the knowledge mum is well cared for and having a nice time.
Recently Mum became a resident for a period of a couple of weeks. This had to be arranged at short notice, the staff arranged this efficiently and Mum was given a lovely room. The staff already knew her and vice a versa which helped mum settle. The staff encouraged mum to maintain as much independence as possible and were available if needed.

Georgie Llewelyn

Job Title: Responsible Individual & General Manager Joined: 2015

Georgie is part of the Llewelyn family who set up Penpergwm House more than 34 years ago and still owns and runs it. She used to be a primary school teacher and has transferred those and other senior management skills into the world of Care.


Georgie cares enormously about quality and bespoke care within Penpergwm House and making all the difference to the Residents' lives.

Tracey Williams

Job Title: Registered Home Manager Joined: 2014

Tracey was originally a nurse in South Africa, who after further professional development in the UK, brings an enormous amount of wisdom and knowledge of the world of Health and Social Care to Penpergwm House. She leads the Care team and is extremely well versed in the governance and regulations that are required to run a Care Home. Tracey's exceptional understanding of the needs of the older person enables her to lead the Care team to go beyond expectations and strive to provide the best possible practise within their roles.
