Cartref is set in a rural area, surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to the river Wye.

It is a small friendly home with an experienced and unified staff team. The residents are at the centre of everything they do and they wish to treat each person with kindness and to respect their unique needs.

They organise a variety of activities according to residents’ individual preferences and interests. They encourage residents to contribute their own skills, experience and ideas and hold regular residents’ meetings. The home organises outings to the nearby Garden Centre, library, luncheon club, Thursday Market, HayDay Café’ and nearby churches.

They have close links with their local community, every 1st and 3rd Friday they host Tea and Chat afternoons when they invite people from the town to join in for cakes, chat and various activities and entertainment.

Cartref hosts regular church services for those who wish to attend and frequent musical concerts. They enjoy weekly visits from Hay Primary school children, the local librarian and volunteers from other community groups.

My mother arrived at Cartref at the end of February just two weeks later the home was in lockdown. This was a very hard time for my mother and her family as mum didn't know anyone and I spent a lot of time worrying if she would be alright. The staff are very good and I cannot thank them enough for the
way they have looked after my mother in these very stressful times. All of them are very kind and helpful. My mother always looks very happy when we wave to her through the window.

We visited Mum on the 13/11/2020, and excellent care and attention have been given to ensuring the strict covid-19 measures are taken. We sat outside in a little gazebo, Mum didn't want to on the 13/11/2020, so we were offered phones to talk to her through the window. The staff have only ever displayed
courtesy, love and kindness towards Mum, and go out of their way to be cooperative and helpful to the family. Mum has been at Cartref for two years now, and I feel very confident in the care she receives. An extremely kind and efficient manager too.

I cannot comment on any internal facilities as due to Covid restrictions, I haven't been inside Cartref. However, it has been easy to set up external visits to see them. Staff have always been very pleasant and informative over the phone. Mum always looks clean and well cared for and her medical needs
have and are being met.
I feel happy that Mum's needs are being met and look forward to the day when masks etc are a thing of the past.

In what has been a very difficult time for staff at Cartref, they have consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty. If medals could be awarded they certainly deserve them.
I get constant feedback from my father and he has left me in no doubt how well he has been cared for since Covid-19 reared
its ugly head.

We are beyond delighted to know that the extremely capable team, led by the manger, take so much care of our mother who has dementia. The team's response to the many changes and barriers presented by Covid 19 is exemplary.

Covid 19 is certainly making an impact on our mothers well being. She frequently

needs one to one attention and it is fair to say that every member of the team goes above and beyond their normal duties to comfort, reassure and console her.

Sadly, our mother's dementia is currently progressing, however, we continue to be very impressed by the way the manager involves the doctor, psychiatric nurse and review teams to monitor her care needs and keep us updated.

The team continue to make it possible for us to visit and stay in contact with our mother. We regularly speak through a window by phone, sit under the gazebo in the garden or Skype each other. Reflecting on negative press coverage about other care homes makes us feel proud of everyone at Cartref!

My mother entered this home unable to be safe on her own at home, at this difficult time the home, it's staff and others were very professional, caring and attentive to my mother and the family. During her stay, she was sometimes difficult because of her health status, but all her needs were met, and
she felt happy there as were we.

Staff are pleasant, attentive and sympathetic to the needs of the individuals. Residents are treated with respect and not patronised. The home is kept clean and odour free, and opportunities for outside and inside activities according to the individual's requirements encouraged.

My neighbour, who manages on his own in the bungalow opposite, decided to book himself in while his daughter and husband were away on holiday. My visits to see if he was alright, found a smiling and happy 91 year old whose requirements (Parkinson's) were being met by a happy and committed staff. The
atmosphere seemed to be a very caring one and my friend seemed very contented. He may well be considering whether to become a resident after his experience.

I believe that Cartref provides a warm and caring atmosphere for my mother. She likes the food (which is traditional-style; perhaps more appropriate for the elderly than some younger visitors might think), and she enjoys the activities provided. All in all, we think she is as 'at home' in Cartref as
she could be anywhere - staff are so friendly and helpful, the environment is clean and safe, and the place seems well-managed. We visit at different times each week, so have wide-ranging experience of the place...

Cartref is always warm and a welcoming place. The residents seem satisfied and looked after. It is clean and cosy. Costs a bit more than some other homes though.

My mother recently spent two weeks here to convalesce from major surgery. The staff and manager are kind and helpful and the home is clean and peaceful. However, I worry about sufficient attention to health and safety. The day I collected my mother I had to move items such as an abandoned trolley and
wheelchair out of the way for her to get by. If I hadn't been there I fear she would have struggled to move these on her own rather than ringing for assistance.

My mother was horrified by the lack of nutritious, well balanced and appetising food. Residents are filled up with cheap stodge such as jelly and ice cream, biscuits and white bread. There was little or nothing in the way of fresh fruit and little in the way of a variety of fresh vegetables. In the information pack there was reference to supper at 8.30 pm but this never materialised.

The outside of the home looks rather run down with little attention to the gardens - the so called sensory garden was overgrown and shabby.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.144)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.144) out of 10 for Cartref Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.644 for Cartref Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (38 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.644

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cartref Care Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 23 registered maximum number of service users is 4.6, which has been reached with 5 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
