Sir Samuel Kelly Memorial Home, Holywood, County Down

Sir Samuel Kelly is a residential home on the outskirts of Holywood, Co Down and is owned by The Salvation Army. It provides care and accommodation for residents over the age of 60 in a purpose built building, adjacent to the original Kelly family home. The home has been refurbished to a high standard.

Sir Samuel Kelly’s philosophy of care is identified through their mission statement. The home aims to meet the ever changing individual needs within and outside of the home. The home environment is supportive and nurturing to be conducive with Salvation Army standards and HPSS 2003 Regulation Quality Improvement Minimum Standards August 2011. SSR strive to provide support to relatives and their representatives.

Residents can take part in both individual and group activities such as baking, reminiscence, musical bingo, cream teas, men’s club, gardening, chairobics, bible study group, painting and puzzles.
The home also benefits from having a park on the right hand side, when weather permits residents can go for a walk in or wheeled around the park accompanied by family members or care staff.

If a resident has been involved with an outside organisation carers would encourage them to continue with this as far a possible, usually organisations are willing to transport residents from the home to the event that they wish to continue with.

Throughout the year the home welcomes different groups, choirs and children to come into the Home to entertain the residents.

The Salvation Army ensures residents’ spiritual needs are met and any specific requests are met for residents to satisfy the individual’s needs. Residents are supported, respected and their individual requests are met to help residents feel reassured.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Sir Samuel Kelly Memorial Home in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.9 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.804 for Sir Samuel Kelly Memorial Home is calculated as follows: ( (74 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 92 Ratings = 4.804

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 3.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Sir Samuel Kelly Memorial Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 3.5

    2. Target of 8 positive Reviews (40 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 3 Reviews ÷ 8 Target = 0.375

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Although my husband, was in an advanced stage of dementia during his residence here and his behaviour was very challenging and fraught with complex difficulties, the staff at Sir Samuel Kelly met every complication that was entailed in his care with consummate professionalism, competence and dignity and addressed each and every difficulty and need that he had, as and when it arose. I cannot thank them or praise them enough for their all consuming attention to his comfort, welfare and well being at all times. Sadly for us as a family, due to his advancing dementia, he now requires nursing care and his care needs will have to be addressed elsewhere.

With grateful thanks to my 'Little Army of Angels' who will always have a special place in my heart.

My mother's dementia condition had worsened over the previous year, and thoughts of her next stage were foremost in out thoughts. Being accepted into Sir Samuel Kelly Memorial Home was a blessing for all of us. The care and attention my mother received have been first class.
After a long hospital stay, and information received from doctors, physios and nursing staff suggesting my mother would be limited to her bed, our despair was evaporated when staff from Sir Samuel Kelly Memorial Home visited and assessed my mother's condition and agreed to take her back to try and improve her mobility. These three weeks had given my mother some dignity and self-respect back.
Some people read or hear bad news stories about Elderly homes. The time my mother has spent at Sir Samuel Kelly Memorial Home has been a good news story the whole way. All staff are passionate and caring about their roles in helping their residents deal with continuing to be who they are. I can't recommend Sir Samuel Kelly Memorial Home sufficiently enough to give it the credit it deserves.

Sir Samuel Kelly Care Home has been a saving grace for our family. The staff are all amazing and so genuinely caring. The environment is calm and creates a "home from home" experience. My mother settled very quickly and I feel reassured knowing she couldn't have better care. I'm just so glad we found it.

I am very happy with the care and attention my mother receives, she is happy and content and feels secure. I do feel her room could be dusted and cleaned a bit more often, otherwise no complaints.

The best place I've ever seen. My father is cared for and loved by all the staff. He is content and happy in the place. The staff are amazing and the care is first class. There are activities for everyone of every ability. The home is clean and tidy and the food is fantastic. As a family member of a resident we are told that the home is my father's home and they are the guests! we can make ourselves coffee and tea which just adds to the homely atmosphere a great place.

My father has vascular dementia and was in a mental health hospital before his placement at Sir Samuel Kelly. Dad had limited communication and interaction, now he is content, aware of his surroundings and people. He is taken on outings to farms, museums and to the steam railways as well as seaside resorts. The facilities and staff are fantastic. I honestly trust all the staff 100% with the care of my father. The staff are friendly and know move my dad and his little ways than I do. I know he is happy and content here and he is really in the best of care.
