My brother and I tried very hard to keep mum cared for at home during her final months, but her condition deteriorated to the point where she needed expert palliative care. We were so lucky to discover Verulam House. All the staff were kind and caring, treating mum with dignity and always retaining
a cheerful demeanour even during such difficult times for everyone. All members of the family were also kindly dealt with by staff and all our requests and wishes were met. It may not have been possible for mum to pass at home, but Verulam House was certainly home from home.

Verulam Care Home St Albans took care of my best friend during his fight with cancer. It was obvious that the home is well managed with excellent staff who care about their clients in this very difficult time, they showed love and understanding. Well done and thanks.

Sadly my aunt was only in the home's care for a very short period of time, but whilst there was happy and well looked after. She was always treated with care and dignity and the team there could not have been more helpful to both her and me. I would highly recommend, the property is not modern and a
little tired, but the quality of care more than makes up for it. Excellent.

The clinical standards are exceptionally high. The carers are (in the main) empathetic and care with competence and sensitivity. The home is not so good at keeping the rooms homely. Also, dirty cups and messy bedside tables are the norm. All that having been said this is a superb nursing home, it is
comfortable and homely. The staff strive for excellence and do well at that.

My father was a resident for almost five years and we found all the staff involved in every aspect of his care were professional, kind, thoughtful and constantly cheerful in their dealings with both him and all our family. We would like to thank them all.

I cannot express enough my sincerest thanks to all the staff at Verulam House Nursing Home who helped my mother through her final months. The patience, tolerance, kindness, understanding and professionalism shown was exemplary. Furthermore, the compassion shown to us, her family, as we struggled through
this most difficult and painful period, was deeply appreciated and will never be forgotten. I cannot convey with words the comfort it brought us to know Mum was being so well cared for. Thank you.

My aunt didn't come to Verulam House for a pleasant retirement but sadly for 'end of life' care. I felt all the staff members I met dealt with both my ailing relative and me in a supportive manner. I was impressed with the service and help offered by the local GP surgery too, with GP's phoning me as
my aunt declined. It was a relief to find a nursing home which could provide this care at the end of my aunts life.

My husband was exceedingly ill when he came to Verulam House in April 2019 and came to end his life there. He has some degree of dementia as well as a weakened heart and lungs and other organs, he had palliative care package organised by the hospital which was aimed to keep his pain and anxiety-free.
His death was quiet slipping away.

Mum became a resident in September 2015.
In August of this year she suffered an unexpected and significant stroke.
When it became clear that the prognosis was extremely poor she returned from hospital to her room at Verulam House as per her documented wishes.
As a family, we cannot fault the palliative
care she received.
The sensitivity and gentleness we witnessed, not just towards Mum but towards all family members, by all staff not just those nursing her, was second to none.
The staff ensured that Mum was able to die peacefully with dignity, and we thank them for that from the bottom of our hearts.

My father moved into Verulam House Nursing Home in December 2017 when he was made to feel extremely welcome and staff get to know and his needs quickly. We were allowed to change/modify and make his room homely and later to move him to a bigger one. He started to enjoy the social occasions and exercise
classes and got to know some other residents. The food was of a good quality and he was always made comfortable. On the whole, the nursing was good. They picked up on problems/infections and acted quickly. The only negatives was a sore on his foot which was not spotted quickly enough.

Following a stay in hospital for over three weeks, my mother was transferred to Verulam House for end of life care. Her stay there was much shorter than expected (only one week) but in that very short time, she was cared for in the most professional and caring manner. The whole team, from the matron
down, could not have done enough for her. Her passing was as she wanted, peacefully and dignified and the support and information given to us (as we do not live locally) was exemplary during her stay and after she passed away. I cannot praise everyone enough. A truly wonderful establishment.

I am so grateful that my Aunt was in your care for the last days of her life. The staff here are wonderful and so caring, they go above and beyond to make sure those in their care are looked after, as well as their relatives and friends. I have seen the care provided at two other nursing homes and they
do not compare in the slightest. I am so thankful to all of you for your care and your kindness.

My mother was brought to the home after 5 weeks in hospital in need of nursing care. She was only in the home for 3 weeks before she died. The level of care for her and for us, her primarily, was of the highest order. She was cared for and cherished as she died in no pain and very peacefully.

Dad was admitted to the home in early June and sadly passed away at the end of the month. The admission was handled faultlessly with professionalism and support. During his stay the nursing staff ensured he was comfortable and cared for. Whilst he was unable to access the home's activities, which were
many, he had all he needed to entertain him in his well equipped room which was comfortable and bright. All the additional staff that cared for Dad were amazing too, professional and sensitive throughout. Thank you.

My husband spent 7 months in Verulam House. He was very unwell when he was admitted in January 2015 for palliative care. He improved every month and was able to come home at the end of July 2015. He recovered thanks to the good nursing and good food provided. He was able to have meals in his room if
he wished, or to eat in the residents dining room when he was improving. He joined in the activities as he wished. Verulam House is an old building with an interesting sheltered garden. The house is very interesting in itself.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.602)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.602) out of 10 for Verulam House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.802 for Verulam House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (86 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.802
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Verulam House Nursing Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 10 = 0.9
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
