  • Pembroke House, Gillingham
Built as an orphanage in the 1920s, Pembroke House was converted into a residential home in 1952, supporting older members of the Royal Navy family. In 2002 and 2012 it was substantially extended and modernised to become the fine care home that it is today.

The home prides itself on high quality care in an exceptional environment, combined with a healthy respect for the customs and traditions of the Royal Navy. It provides a welcoming and caring extended family atmosphere – a real ‘home from home’.

Staff provide care and support to the highest standards in a bright and welcoming environment. Residents’ needs are paramount and carefully considered in choosing personal programmes of individual care.

The home can accommodate up to 55 residents, with full nursing care available for approximately one third of that number. The Trust is committed to a programme of continual improvement, and has won a coveted ‘Good’ assessment from the Care Quality Commission after the most recent inspection in August 2021.

Pembrook House offers high-quality care. Residents are given individual care plans that detail their needs likes and dislikes along with their life history. There are planned activities every morning and afternoon with trips to the local shopping centre plus outings that include cricket and tennis.
There is strong naval traditions. Staff are hard-working, warm and welcoming treating residents with dignity.

Following 20 years living at another care home, our mother moved to Pembroke House a year ago. It has exceeded our expectations such that we wish we had found it before. It has excellent standards, motivated teams, first-class facilities, together with a comprehensive activities programme. There is
a high level of professionalism and commitment beyond anything we have seen previously. The whole team possess the right combination of skills and personality. Everyone plays their part in creating a well run, comfortable, happy home. In particular, the management of the COVID pandemic has been exemplary. After 20 years we have peace of mind that our mother is well cared.

Absolutely fantastic home that really cares and looks after the residents, every need of the residents is catered for and the activities laid on are second to none. The home is kept in fantastic condition and is extremely clean and hygienic, with the nicest gardens and grounds anyone could ask for.

My mother went into Pembroke House when she was 97 years old, she had started to become unable to look after herself. The staff couldn't have been more patient, caring and kinder to her. The home offers such a lot of events for the residents including twice-weekly shopping, bingo, singers coming to
the home to entertain the residents and other activities, and in house hairdresser, coffee shop. Every year a trip to the remembrance service at the Albert Hall and many more events. The families are invited with the residents to a garden party every year, there is a lovely garden to sit in. All the staff and management treat everyone with respect.

My aunt has suffered from many serious illness episodes over the last six months. After her initial stay in hospital in January, we were very fortunate to secure a place for her at Pembroke. Unfortunately, she had to return to hospital several times because of the seriousness of her illness. Pembroke
has on every occasion gone to great lengths to receive her back despite the concerns of covid-19 - taking extreme care to care for my aunt and protect other residents. My aunt is now hopefully 'on the mend' and is benefiting from the excellent care and support provided by Pembroke. We are very fortunate that she has a home at such a high-quality care home.

We couldn't ask for a better place for my mum. Although she is unable to speak or move she is included in activities whenever possible, with staff often taking the time to go and speak to her and let her know what is happening. Cannot really comment on food or drink as mum is tube fed however they still
made her a birthday cake for her to share with other residents.

The care shown towards my mother since she became a resident some four years ago has been second to none.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff have gone beyond the call of duty in maintaining a virus-free area within Pembroke House.
I am convinced that without the staff's professionalism and dedication
my mother would have not reached the age she is (104). Congratulations must go to the head of care who has forged together a team of dedicated carers, domestic, maintenance and administrative staff who are all a credit to their profession.

I have no reason to find fault with Pembroke House. My sister was admitted two and a half years ago. Over the initial months, she improved dramatically, and it's a pleasure to see her now. She is happy and content. The staff are wonderful from management, maintenance and, of course, the carers. It feels
like I am visiting my sister in her home. It's warm and welcoming. A credit to all and peace of mind for our family.

During the pandemic, which has been a very difficult time for all care homes, the way in which Pembroke looked after the resident and staff has been outstanding.
They locked done the premises to keep everyone safe from the virus from the word go, which meant no resident caught the virus in the 50
or so who have since been tested.
They continue to work to the highest level and follow Government guidelines. Well done to the manager and all staff for your efforts.

I have a friend of 30+ years who is a resident. As a result of visiting and observing how dedicated and professional the staff were I decided to become a volunteer. In this role I have had the opportunity to observe the goings on in the home at first hand. All the staff and volunteers receive comprehensive
training, which is updated at least annually and we strive to maintain the highest standards. The food, cleaning and activities are excellent. The residents also appear to appreciate the efforts of the staff.

My mother has been a resident at Pembroke House for nine years now and has been very happy there. During the period May-June all the residents have been looked after very well and made to feel safe and secure due to excellent measures to prevent Covid-19 getting into the home.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.163)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.163) out of 10 for Pembroke House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.636 for Pembroke House is calculated as follows: ( (79 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.636
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.527 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Pembroke House is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 55 registered maximum number of service users is 11. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 11 = 0.727
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
