Care for Veterans (formerly The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home) was established in 1919 to care for those soldiers returning from World War I with life-changing disabilities.

Today, Care for Veterans provides long term Nursing and Residential care and short stay Respite Care to ex-Servicemen and women and their families. Care is also provided in separate wings for those with mild dementia symptoms and those with Learning Disabilities. Whilst priority is given to accommodate residents who have military connections, someone with sympathy for military personnel may be considered for admission if there is an available room.

Therapy options include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and a counselling service.

Care for Veterans provides daily social and recreational activities and a chaplaincy service. Events and Outings are organised on occasions – all delivered from the charity's facilities in Worthing, West Sussex.

The Home is surrounded by gardens, has benefit of a small library, a sunny conservatory and a large Day Room to receive visitors and participate in talks, quizzes and musical sessions.

A Day Care facility use has recently been added to the service, which can assist someone as per individual need.

My experience I have found with the care for veterans since my brother has been there in January 2025 is absolutely outstanding.
I can not fault it in any way , the care they give is exceptional, they all go above and beyond their role within the care home , and I know my brother is safe within their
care, every single member of staff are professional, happy , friendly and treat my brother as tho he was the only person they care for, he is very happy there . The care home is very clean and always tidy .The food is very good too.
I am always made to feel very welcome when I visit my brother , there is also a lovely family feeling amongst all the staff.
The care home provide a wide range of activities and put on entertainment for the residents, I could definitely not find a better place for my brother to be cared for .

My son has now been at Care for Veterans for 2.5 years and I wouldn't wish for him to be anywhere else. The care is superb. The staff are exceedingly friendly and accommodating. My son is a complex case and unable to communicate but the staff all talk to him as normal, and have gotten familiar with
his nuances, as if they were his family. The home itself has a wide range of facilities, and although he is unable to participate with all of them, he is always considered. They have in-house physio and the team there are commendable, working with him and helping him to improve. Communication from the team is excellent, with ourselves being kept abreast of his progress. Although my son is unable to attend the dining room, I have noted how well it is laid out and feels more homely, with residents even able to have a glass of wine with dinner. Even the facilities management team have a personal approach, always saying hello direct to my son and engaging with him. Couldn't wish for better.

Care for Veterans is a wonderful care home. They really do care about the residents welfare and wellbeing. My mother has led a very active life and Care for Veterans has provided stimulation, through a timetable of events in the social hub, physio therapy session and gym classes. They also provide other
health care support linked to the NHS, as well as beautician treatments. They actively seek feedback which is acted upon promptly. As you walk around the home staff always great you with a smile, including the reception which runs efficiently. My mother has a chance to go on regular outings and attend community fayres held for seasonal occasions.

From my initial approach to Care for Veterans Worthing and through to my Mum being accepted into the home both my sister and I have experienced a warm, caring and friendly response.
As a veteran myself, Gifford House was my first thought when the issue of Mum going into care arose and particularly
as Mum had, in times past volunteered there. The assessment was carried out very quickly and there was no issue with Mum being eligible and being accepted.
Although we are only in the early weeks of her residency, Mum has benefited from exceptionally attentive care and compassion in a very clean environment. All the staff we have met have been lovely and the nursing care she has received has improved a long-standing issue which is an excellent result.
I can only say that we as a family are very pleased thus far and more than satisfied Mum is in good hands.

My husband has been a resident for 9.5 years. Throughout that time he has received very good care.
All the staff from the nurses, carers, facilities team, caterers, therapists and administration staff are all pleasant and helpful.
As a family we are all welcomed with smiling faces and the home is
really a very happy environment.
The catering is of a good standard with a number choices for each meal and the dining room has seen recent improvements.
The number of recreational activities recently has increased for residents which is welcomed.

My Mum has recently become a resident. From our initial viewing to see whether we thought it would be a good place for Mum, we were very impressed. The home has such a lovely welcoming atmosphere for residents and visitors. My Mum has been made to feel so cared for - she said all the staff have
been so kind and can't do enough for her. Even though she has only been there for a few weeks now, our family have seen an improvement in both her physical appearance and cognitively, as she has more daily activities to participate in. The activities are tailored so that all abilities can join in.
My daughter has a background in care and says it's the nicest home she's ever been in!

Veterans has loads of respect.

Over the period of time my son has been in care, the staff have come to know him and can quickly identify any health problem. They understand what is "normal" for him and when things are not quite right. I feel this personal knowledge is vital in the care needed for multiple health issues
and I continue to be so very grateful for their attention to detail, which makes so much difference to the life of someone so dependant.

My Mum moved here 5 years ago after being in hospital for a year. She has been well looked after, with a high level of Nursing staff. All Nurses and Care workers are kind, caring and loving, and initiate Mums needs well, everything is done in her best interest, they know her very well. All staff from
Nurses, care workers, receptionists, maintenance and housekeeping are very welcoming and friendly. There are always activities on in The Hub, and entertainment for the residents. The Nursing staff and care workers are very supportive to us when we visit, and always keep us up to date on Mums health as it changes often. The food menu is home cooked, varied and options are always available. This really is a wonderful home for the residents.

Earlier this year my husband was admitted for respite care when my Mum was seriously ill & I needed to be with her. My stressful situation was immediately understood by management & my husband was admitted within 24 hrs, giving me the chance to be with my Mum in her last days.
7 months on -
my husband's condition has deteriorated so significantly that he needs 24 hour care. It was evident that C for V was the perfect place for him to move to on a permanent basis & he was warmly welcomed back by numerous members of staff who remembered him from March. Just 2 weeks on, I am more convinced than ever that our choice of nursing home is spot-on for his needs. Nursing care is exemplary. Staff are incredibly kind, thoughtful, friendly, cheerful & professional & the whole organisation has a stand out 'can do' attitude. Nothing seems too much trouble. They have transformed my own life by relieving me of the stress & responsibility of being a carer - I am a wife again. We can't thank them enough

I approached the Home on behalf of my brother in May this year to enquire if it would be possible for my brother to become a resident.
I was very well received by the Administrator who explained everything clearly to me and answered all my questions. A couple of months later the health of my brother
deteriorated and he was admitted into the Care Home.
He was extremely well received by all members of the staff and he was so well cared for from day one. He is 93 years of age and he is receiving first class attention from the staff who attend to all his needs as his mobility is very poor.
The home itself is very comfortable, is very well run and gives an atmosphere of calmness and serenity.
It also provides good daycare with the emphasis placed on interesting recreational activities for the residents, so good for their mental health. My brother tells me that the catering arrangements are excellent.
In summary, I am delighted that my brother is treated kindly in a very safe environment

My husband has been a resident in Care for Veterans for the past four years. During this time he has had at least 3 bouts of sepsis and amputation of his leg. Whenever he has needed medical intervention it has been summoned quickly & appropriately. His day to day care has been exemplary. I have a nursing
background so I am in a position to say the care he & the family receive is second to none. We are greeted with genuine love & warmth whenever we visit.

Settling down following recent merger with seemingly greater confidence amongst staff. Sometimes get impression residents do not get sufficient support or consideration to compensate for physical disabilities when partaking in group activities. Although relationship with ward staff contributes greatly
to my activities as a befriender my feeling is that I lack some suppot from new management team compared to that with previous regime.

My husband had been looked after by Care for Veterans from November 2024 until July 2025. The dedicated care from ALL staff was absolutely amazing. They treated my husband with dignity right up until he sadly passed away on Norfolk ward. I cannot speak highly enough of Care for Veterans, they give the

Our son has now stayed at Care for Veterans several times for respite care and on each occasion we were made to feel welcome and nothing seemed to be any trouble. There is a very warm welcome given by the reception staff on arrival and the care staff are fantastic and the close attention they give to
residents gives us the reassurance that he will be looked after when we leave him. Our son has complex needs and the range of staff from the care assistants to the senior nursing staff ensures that he gets excellent care for the duration of his stay. The booking arrangements and management also deserve recognition as the whole home is clearly focussed on the residents coming first. We would strongly recommend anyone to this home and we hope to continue visiting for respite care in the future.

I was admitted to Care for Veterans on the 5th June 25 having spent the beginning of June in hospital following a fall. With no care package in place and not able to walk properly I had to go into the veterans for respite care. This helped me to gain confidence and better mobility as I also live on
my own. The care I was given was wonderful and restored my confidence. Have returned home to see how I manage with occasional help from my daughter.

We contacted Care for Veterans when mum was discharged from hospital too soon and unable to walk or manage to look after herself following a blood clot in the top of her thigh. The staff and everyone involved in looking after mum from the first day she arrived have been, amazing - kind, caring and treating
mum with compassion, respect and encouragement when she is walking with her frame. They have also been a support to us as a family when we were so concerned about mum. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who works at the Care For Veterans and we look forwards to attending the summer fayre and other events! Thank you
