Although my dad was not in your care home for long the care he received while on end of life care I felt he was treated with dignity compassion and loving care. The staff made his last couple of weeks by responding to my dads good sense of humour by offering him cuddles when he asked! I was also well looked after by the staff and management so much so that I felt like we were at home! Making me feel comfortable so I could spend last few weeks of his with with in.

Amazing care home, walking in and the homely feeling was brilliant. The staff greeted us and made a fuss of mum. Have stayed for lunch with mum a couple of times and the food was lovely, and nothing seems too much trouble. The home is very clean and mum is looked after very well. I certainly would highly recommend The Gables to anyone who is looking for a care home for their loved ones.

Thank you for your feedback. Although your mum hasn't been with us long, she seems to be very settled and happy to be with us. I'm really pleased that your mum is with us and that you already feel part of our extended family.

Our dad has been here 8 months, for someone with advanced dementia he has settled incredibly well. All the staff are well trained + do an amazing job. Plenty of organised activities, great food and lots of it. Dads bedroom is well equipped and always pristine. I love that we can visit at anytime and are always made to feel welcome. Finding the right care home for our much - loved dad was never going to be easy, but we really did succeed with The Gables!

My mum was so happy at The Gables. After living alone with carers coming in, she felt so comfortable and spoilt. The staff are all excellent and couldn't have cared for her more. She was thoroughly spoilt. She enjoyed all the entertainment laid on, such a variety and joined in with it all. Would recommend to anyone.

My mum was at The Gables for 12 years. She loved it there. The manager was great. All the staff were amazing, they trusted us like family, it's a lovely nursing home. The care they give my mum was excellent.

I would recommend the home to all my friends.

Unfortunately my aunt who was 88 at the time, was "allegedly" assaulted by a carer. The very person who was meant to be looking after her. She suffered a black eye, which she couldn't open. All of this was witnessed by another carer. But due to insufficient evidence, the police couldn't press charges. The "alleged" attacker was suspended and dismissed several weeks later. My aunt is on end of life care and is suffering from advanced Alzheimer's dementia and weighs approximately 3.5 stone. Hardly a threat to anyone. Due to her frailty, she's stuck there. Other than that, the Gables is okay.

I am sure that you appreciate that we cannot comment on the outcome of the Police enquiry other than to assure you that we cooperated fully throughout. The staff are friendly and make you welcome. When handling concerns you can express your concerns and most of the time they are acted on. The residents have enjoyed having an activities person. Mum loves the food and snacks. The security is good. Things to work on. Washing of hair, hands and food under nails and feet not washed so dirt collects between toes. Pressure cushions smell of urine and commodes often smell. Rooms need decorating and carpets replaced. The garden could be used a lot more.

Reply from Chris Chambers, Manager at The Gables Care Home

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, as you are aware, your mum does not always accept assistance with her personal care although we will continue to look at different ways of achieving this. The home is in the process of replacing carpets around the home with several of the communal areas...

My brother-in-law actually asked us to arrange for him to stay at The Gables as he had become unwell and realised he couldn't take care of himself and his father had been a short-term resident a few years back.
During his stay, his health declined quite rapidly and he was eventually admitted to hospital where his decline sadly continues to worsen. But while he was at the Gables the staff were really supportive, caring and kind. They did their utmost to assist him, keeping us informed every step of the way.

I would recommend The Gables to anyone seeking a caring and safe place for their family members who require that extra helping hand.

Following discharge from hospital following major surgery this 92-year-old man on end-of-life care has and is receiving extraordinary care and attention at this care home.
From the top down, the staff are clearly a concerned team and they are all doing all that can be done for the resident's welfare and comfort.
It is very comforting to see that the care and surroundings, plus the effort that has gone into his room facilities is paying serious dividends in terms of end-of-life comfort and care.

I am, to say the least, very pleased that he is receiving the best of attention at this stage of life, and commend the staff for their outstanding care practices and the provision of the essential resources to accommodate, they are a credit to the profession.

My brother has been at The Gables for the last 11 months in that time he was very settled and thrived, he loved all the staff from the care staff to management. He was treated with love and respect, sadly my brother passed away this week. The staff and management were fantastic, would recommend for families looking for care.

My mum has resided here for more than eight years. She settled in nicely after a few weeks and has been very happy. She always praised the girls for making her feel at home, always there to help when needed and very friendly. The manager and senior staff were always willing to sort out any minor issues. Sadly Mum passed away over the Easter period, aged 101! I will always be grateful to them all for making her last eight years happy ones.

The staff at the Gables were excellent and looked after my friend well. However, the quality of the food was very poor, meals served cold and for the first week of her stay, there were no vegetables. Also, the activities programme we were told about at our viewing turned out to be non-existent. My friend was at the Gables for 3 weeks and asked me to get her moved. As stated, the staff are excellent and caring but for people without dementia, this is not an ideal home. Also as she is independent and could shower herself the lack of hand bars was not ideal.

Although my Mum was only in The Gables for a few weeks, she settled really quickly and was cared for really well. Her room had views of the harbour, was always clean and she always looked really comfortable. All the staff were really friendly and always had time for a chat. They supported me and my family through her final days and did everything they could for us all.

Mum was in The Gables for over a year and sadly passed away in April 2023. Her condition deteriorated over that time due to Dementia, so her care needs were constantly changing. Throughout the whole time, her care was exemplary, and I cannot praise every one of the staff enough.

My father is in this residential home and he’s very happy with the care he receives. Plus, it’s spotless. My father has come on so well since he’s been here and all his family are very happy with his care. He has such a lovely room with an amazing view of the sea. I’m leaving here knowing my dad is very safe.

Just like to say the senior is very understanding. Brilliant at her job, always there to answer my questions and sort out any problems.
My dad is finding it hard to settle in after living on his own. Some staff need to be more understanding of these residents that have to go into care and leave their whole life they know behind and come to terms with moving into a small bedroom they now have to call home, with very little of their own belongings.

More passion and empathy wouldn't go amiss.

Reply from Chris Chambers, Manager at The Gables Care Home
Many thanks for your comments although it's disappointing to hear you feel some staff lack passion and empathy at the home but having spoken to other members of your family who originally placed your dad at The Gables, they do not share your views.

Your dad has told me personally that he is very happy and settled and loves being at the home.

Recently, my mum had urgent need to be housed in a safe and secure environment. With the assistance of social services, a room was offered at The Gables Care Home. Immediately, my fears and worries were alleviated. I cannot thank the Staff enough for all their care, patience and attention given to my mum, since her arrival nothing is too much trouble. She tells me how helpful and loving the staff are and how nice the food is and it is lovely to see her smiling again. Once again, thank you to the management and support staff of The Gables.
