The Gables

6 Marine Parade, Gorleston, Great Yarmouth NR31 6DU

The Gables, at Gorleston, offers residential care packages, within scenic surroundings and not far from the sea air at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.

Residents have the choice to take part in numerous activities and events organised by the service, including an annual fete, with in-house hairdressing, manicures and hand massages also available.

A converted Victorian mansion, The Gables has retained much of the charm of its original architecture while being organised with comfortable furnishings in mind. A sheltered patio is popular during the warmer weather and residents are welcome to bring their own possessions.

The provider believes in on-going training programmes, though carers are employed for their personal qualities as well as their skills, in order to achieve warmth and friendliness in a homely environment.

Overview

The Review Score of 9.6 (maximum of 10) for The Gables is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 17 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for The Gables in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.652 for The Gables is calculated as follows: ( (142 Excellents x 5) + (53 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 204 Ratings = 4.652

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 4.93 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Gables is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 8.6 positive Reviews (43 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 8 Reviews ÷ 8.6 Target = 0.930

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

9.6 The Gables has a Review Score of 9.6 (9.582) from 17 Reviews

My husband is the resident and has been in The Gables for nearly 4 years and has Parkinson's and chronic mobility issues. He is very happy and content under the circumstances and gets so well looked after and every single member of staff is fantastic and we could not ask for any better.

We viewed a number of homes in the area and The Gables was the home that we felt best suited my Grandad and his needs. The support from the staff means that he is able to maintain his independence, whilst feeling confident that he has the backup available to him if necessary. He is so happy and settled at The Gables, his room is always warm and kept clean, he says the food is excellent and he refers to the carers as his extended family.

The Gables has a wonderful, homely feel, with staff really taking the time to meet individual needs.
From my perspective, the home is a safe environment, the staff are wonderful and it is evident that they care for the residents as they would their own family. Management are great; very approachable and are happy to work alongside relatives and residents to ensure that the best possible level of care is delivered.

I wanted to give an up to date review of The Gables now 5/10/17 and my father has been in there for over 3 years now he went in on his birthday 3 years ago on the 16/09/14 age 73. He suffers from Parkinson's disease and also has very poor mobility due to other issues but is of sound mind.

My father has a lovely room. He spends a lot of time in his room as he likes to be quiet and watch his television. There is always some form of entertainment going on or things for the residents to do if they so wish and for the families to join in which is lovely and it's nice you have the choice to take part or not and plenty of nice drinks and food throughout the day and night.

Every every single person who works at The Gables work so hard to make my fathers life easier I know he is very grateful as am I and my mother. If we had to live in this care home I would be more than satisfied we as a family are always made so welcome by everyone and they are now our family as well which I am proud to say.

My mother took up residence at the end of April 2017, having lived in her own bungalow until that time. She became very confused, scared and unsettled but thanks to the dedication and care offered by the management and staff, Mum looks so much better and accepting of her new life at The Gables. I cannot fault in any way how Mum is being cared for, fed and treated by such a delightful professional team. I am so thankful The Gables was my choice for Mum.

A caring and safe haven for residents. Staff take the trouble to go beyond immediate needs and involve residents as much as possible. The food is excellent.

My mother has been a resident for about 18 months. During this period her overall health has definitely improved and her outlook on life is much healthier. The staff have encouraged her to participate in many different activities and she now thoroughly enjoys everything she does, especially as she has found new friendships with other residents - she says she's never laughed so much! We are extremely happy with her treatment and her progress.

My Aunt and her husband have been resident in The Gables for over a year now. It was a difficult adjustment for them as they had to leave their lovely bungalow that they had retired to. It was a traumatic time for them. This was eased by the wonderful staff at The Gables. While ill health and dementia have continued to take their toll, the staff have looked after them well. Constantly coming up with new ways to adapt my relatives care.

My Aunt and her husband have their own possessions around them and while they have given The Gables staff many challenges, the staff have met them. I am very happy with the level of care they receive. It is very difficult to care for our relatives, there is never a one size fits all solution. The Gables have a very dedicated group of professionals who constantly go the extra mile for their residents. No residential home is perfect, nor are our own homes and lifestyles perfect, but at The Gables, they do their utmost to reach perfection every day.

Mother is about to complete her first year here. I cannot praise the staff/management enough for the care given to her. I have peace of mind that she is well-cared for and she is now settled and happy. She herself says she loves being there. All staff are very helpful and always smiling.
Mum has a lovely room which is kept very clean and tidy. Food is very good and varied. I visit three times per week and always leave knowing that mum is content in her surroundings. P.S the effort put in by all to make a truly "Happy Xmas" for residents was wonderful.
Thank you all so much.

My brother was a resident in the Gables for end of life care. He was very reluctant to go into care but the staff were very patient and kind and within a short time he relaxed and began to feel at home. I felt everyone went out of their way to make him feel welcome. Apart from his illness, he had disabilities being deaf and non speaking, his eyesight was also poor. Despite this, the staff made every effort to communicate with him and meet his needs. I feel he was well cared for and comfortable during the final 17 months of his life.

We found a very homely, friendly and relaxed home.
All staff from managers, care, catering, cleaners and maintenance were all helpful and made residents, families and friends feel at home. They gave our friend the best possible end of life care with dignity.

My Stepmother and Father are not the easiest to deal with as a couple, as they will tend to interact off each other, so to get them to do anything can be trying, but the staff do try to get them to join in. The staff do have a battle to get them to look after their personal hygiene, especially when they think they have already had a wash or that they had shower the other day, when clearly they hadn't, recently staff have managed to endure and get them to be more regular in their cleaning habits.
The team at the Gables treat My Stepmother and Father with a cheery but firm approach even when faced with a joint defence of non cooperation.
Like all places there have been some niggles but nothing that hasn't been resolved after a chat with staff, with this attitude you never feel there isn't anything that is troubling no matter how small you can't bring up for discussion.

Mum was resident at The Gables for two years following a stroke causing incapacity to one side of her body. She therefore required a considerable amount of personal attention and I was invariably happy with the responses from the staff who were friendly to both residents and visitors. I did have some minor issues during her stay but the management were very approachable and in general things were changed for the better.
This was mum's third such residence and I think that one has to accept that staff cannot be provided on a one-to-one basis and there are times when attention to the resident is not as quick as one might hope.
he Gables were no different from the other two homes in that matter. If our unfortunate situation was to be repeated I would have no hesitation in making The Gables my choice again.

I found The Gables to be one of the best care homes during my search in the Great Yarmouth area. My parents booked in for respite care in March and both liked it. They have now decided to stay permanently. The building and facilities are very good, managing to retain the character of a period property with modern facilities and it has the benefit of overlooking the sea. It feels a clean and safe environment. We also find the staff extremely helpful and attentive and there is a happy buzz about the place with activities most days.

Our father was in The Gables for 5 1/2 years until he passed away from a stroke and had the best possible care we could have wished for. Although we were worried how he would react, he settled in really quickly and got on really well with the staff who were really fond of him as he was of them. He always praised the food and said how nice it was and enjoyed having a sing a long at the activities. We truly believe he was as happy as he could be living away from home.

My mother spent 1¾ years in the Gables after a badly broken shoulder and onset of dementia left her unable to cope at home.

On arrival, her room had only just been refurbished to brand new condition and had a marvelous view of Gorleston clifftop and beach. The charges were the most reasonable of anywhere I viewed, and taking into account the number of staff employed around the clock, all the food and facilities provided and not least the marvelous location and room, represented excellent value. Almost no one wants to leave their own home, but I can honestly say that if I really had to I'd be happy to move there myself.

Almost every Sunday I was able to join Mum for a lovely roast lunch which we occasionally took in her room so we could enjoy the views.

I have to mention the wonderful staff who really cared for Mum as if she were a member of their own family, often showing care and concern above and beyond.
