Well, this is my last and final review of the Gables. My dad had nearly made his 8 years on September 16th which would have been his birthday and he would have been 81 - he also went into the Gables on his birthday. He had chronic mobility, Parkinson's disease and dementia. Sadly he deteriorated very quickly with not being able to hardly talk and swallow which was so, so distressing. He finally passed peacefully on 4/09/2022 thank God. We now know he is at peace and has not got to suffer anymore - sadly life is very cruel to some. My mum and I would like to thank every single member of staff at the Gables for the love they gave him and my mum and I. I had to clear out his room and the staff were so upset as I know they loved him. It's been a horrid 8 years watching a loved one fade away but we get comfort he was looked after right until the end and every single member of staff knows what we think of them. For one last time, from the bottom of our hearts - thank you all.

Reply from Chris Chambers, Manager at The Gables Care Home

Thank you for such kind words. Your dad, you and your mum meant a lot to all the staff who work in the home and it was always a pleasure caring for your dad. Over the 8 years we have built up firm relationships with all of you and I know how supportive you have been to The Gables throughout this...

I chose the Gables for my sister because it was near to my home and I would be able to visit regularly. I deemed this important as she had dementia and lacked capacity. From my first conversation with the manager, I knew I had made the right choice. No effort was spared to assist me in settling my sister. In fact, her physical condition improved greatly and I and her visitors said they had noticed a marked improvement in her since admission. We were shocked when my sister passed away some 6 weeks later. Indeed it is fair to say that the staff felt so too. This situation however does not detract from the care she received during this period.

Reply from Chris Chambers, Manager at The Gables Care Home

Thank you for your comments, it was a pleasure caring for your sister and I know she was very happy and settled for the short time she was with us. We will also miss you visiting with your little dog as many of the other residents benefitted from this as well.

All the staff are compassionate and caring. They treat my mum with great sensitivity and kindness. The staff work hard to ensure there are plenty of activities and entertainment and I feel reassured that my mum is safe and happy there.

My mum lived in The Gables for 3 and a half years. The staff were always open, friendly, well trained and extremely caring. Everyone treated her with kindness and respect, which just increased as her dementia took hold and she became more difficult.

I would highly recommend The Gables as a care home.

Our relation was admitted to Gables in December 2020, during Covid, from hospital. He was incontinent and hardly able to walk. During his time there, visits were limited due to Covid. As restrictions eased, I could visit and take him out. The staff were all lovely and really took good care of him, resulting in good mobility and regaining his dignity. We cannot thank the Gables enough for what they have done as it would have been very challenging, due to his nature and dementia. Thank you so much.

Reply from Chris Chambers, Manager at The Gables Care Home

Thank you for your kind comments, we always strive to promote dignity and autonomy. As you know, your relative was quite a character around the home whilst he was with us but always a pleasure to care for.

My father was put in this awful place in March up until October this year. Extremely unfriendly staff and the manager is a joke. Horrified at the so-called care my dad received, still fighting to get this place closed.

Mum was a resident at The Gables for almost three years before she passed away, recently. She no longer knew who we were and the staff at The Gables became her family, as well as providing her care. I found that all the staff were helpful and supportive in helping me to keep as much contact with Mum as was possible. This was quite difficult, as I live almost 300 miles away. I cannot speak too highly of the support that my husband and I received on the night Mum passed away. The staff on duty were so caring and considerate. I feel they helped Mum to go with dignity. Several members of staff said very positive things to me about Mum, including the fact that you could laugh and joke with her. That tells me that she was happy there.

Reply from Chris Chambers, Manager at The Gables Care Home

Thank you for your kind comments. Staff do see themselves as extended family, building relationships with both our residents and their relatives. It's been a pleasure caring for your mum for the past 3 years and thank you for your continued support of the home, especially during Covid.

My ninety seven old mother went into The Gables last October just before another wave of Covid-19. We were not allowed into the building or to see her to explain the reason for her not being allowed out of the building nor for visitors to be allowed in. The only communication was via telephone, email or the homes laptop for face time. The carers looked after her well and the food was good as she would soon have told me if not but we didn’t really get to see how caring they were and the affection they had for her until her last few days of her life when we were allowed in on compassionate grounds. Thank you to all concerned.

Mum was not the most amiable of people, but the staff worked their way around this to keep her as comfortable and happy as possible, especially during the Covid period. The manager was exceptional and very good at solving any issues we had with Mum and overcoming any problems promptly.

My husband was transferred to The Gables from hospital following a stroke earlier this year. Unfortunately, due to Covid, he was isolated in his room for 14 days, which he found very stressful. After that we were able to have short visits in the garden. He was very well looked after and found all the staff to be friendly and caring. The meals were very good.

This is my personal review of my stay at The Gables. My two weeks rest booked was extended because of the coronavirus and lockdown.

I can truly say that it was a pleasure for me to be in a safe home and be in the care of all such caring staff, they will be very much missed. The Gables is situated in a beautiful location with the sea and sand across the road and a pleasant garden to sit in and enjoy the sea air. My extended stay at The Gables gave me the chance to build up my strength with all the good food and care received. Many thanks.

My father spent his final months at The Gables. During that time, I felt that he received the highest standard of care, support and kindness. I felt like I was a part of the team around my father and we worked together to ensure he had the best care and quality of life. When I made suggestions about care or treatment, I was always listened to and when there were risks, staff handled this with due care and diligence.
Communication was always easy and constructive and I felt that both my father's needs and my own were always attended to. The staff were always caring and kind and the environment was well maintained.

My father was treated with respect and staff maintained his dignity at all times. He was happy there.

My mum came to The Gables after a series of falls resulting in hospitalisation. Since being here, her health, mental state and happiness have vastly improved and she has returned to being the mum I had 3 years ago. The staff are all fantastic and nothing is too much trouble for them. Mum is treated with dignity and respect at all times and is encouraged to be sociable and happy. I can't thank them enough.

I didn't want my dad to end up in a care home, I don't suppose anyone wants that for their dad. However, sometimes it is unavoidable and due to the nature of my dad's illness, it was not possible to care for him at home. You read so much bad press about care homes in general so I was very worried about him residing in one. I did lots of research of local care homes and decided that this one looked the best by far. During my dad's time at the home either myself, siblings or Mother visited him every afternoon and evening. During those visits, we were made very welcome and witnessed nothing but care, kindness and respect shown, not only to my dad, but to all of the residents.

I know that we made the right decision in choosing The Gables and thank the staff from the bottom of my heart for all their hard work, kindness and compassion shown to my dad. Sadly my dad passed away due to his illness but it is of considerable comfort to me knowing he was cared for exceptionally well in his final weeks.

My mum has been at The Gables for a few months now and is settling in gradually as it has been a big change in her life, from looking after herself to being looked after. The management and staff have been excellent in helping Mum adjust to her new life in a new home.
Just recently was Mum's 90th birthday, which she enjoyed immensely. We had a small family lunch party, rounded off in the lounge with the other residents with a
birthday cake to share, a welcome surprise for her. All this was organised by the management and team, who do a great job daily.
My mum only lives a couple of minutes away from me and my family. I try to see her as much as I can, but I have no worries about her being at The Gables, as I know

she is getting the care and attention she needs in a safe environment. I can't thank you all enough.
