My mother was in Iceni House {now Swaffham House} for 5 years and sadly passed away in April this year. In that time I made several complaints to management regarding her care, even contacting the CQC. The turnover of staff is awful and there is only a small percentage of staff who really want to be there and actually care. There were several managers there during that time who were all full of promises but nothing changed. I could only rely on a handful of staff to give mum proper care. Kingsley had taken over just before mum passed but I had no support or advice from management as to what the procedure was afterwards. None of the new management team bothered to even speak to me when I went in to collect mums things and they never offered to send a representative to the funeral, which after 5 years I found appalling. After speaking to some members of staff that remain, and that's not many, I despair as to the future if this care home and would never recommend it.

My mother was allocated here for respite so we didn't choose it. I would have no hesitation in using this care home if needed in the future. It was very welcoming and the office staff were always happy to speak to me about any queries. There were activities that my mother was encouraged to take part in. Also, residents were assisted to get to the dining room for lunch so they went always in their rooms. Only one problem, the TV controls were very small and difficult to use.

Reply from Pete Dean, Home Manager at Swaffham House

Thank you for your kind words, and your vote of confidence in what we do. I will take to heart your view with regards to the TV remote control and I will ask the team to see if we can source some universal remotes that have larger controls.

My brother has only been in Iceni for 2 weeks so not seen activities yet as still settling in. I have been impressed by the calm atmosphere there. The staff soon learned my brother's name and they all spoke to him. The staff have been chosen so well, they are happy to answer questions. I'm not sure you could find a better place (value for money isn't my concern.).

Reply from Pete Dean, Home Manager at Swaffham House

Many thanks for your very kind words - I will ensure that they are shared with the whole team. - and they are deeply appreciated.

My relative is generally well looked after and treated with care and respect, but there are a couple of things that worry the family.
1. Hydration - often visited in mornings and afternoons and no hot drinks are offered to the residents. Cartons in the lounge and juice in rooms. Residents are not all able to get to them or have ability to ask. Staff are usually very, very busy and don't have time to do this.
2. Soap - Sanitiser is available but no soap. Sticky fingers etc need soap and warm water - not sanitiser rubbed in as well.
3. Cleanliness - the cleaners are brilliant and work very hard on main rooms and shared spaces. My relative can be messy and I feel the chair, table and sides of bed need a spruce up.

4. Activities - when happening good and girls are great would be lovely to see a bit more going on.

Reply from Pete Dean, Home Manager at Swaffham House

Many thanks for your honesty and acknowledgement of the normally good level of care that we deliver to all of our residents. Your concerns were, correctly brought to me, and I can reassure you that actions have already been taken - I raised these thoughts at our weekly Heads of Department meeting...

Prior to my father's transfer here in April, I visited Iceni House Care Home amongst several other care homes in the surrounding area. I found the staff warm and welcoming. The home is clean and fresh smelling, speaking to other relatives I was decided that of the several homes visited that day, Iceni was the best choice.
The home has an atmosphere of warmth, friendliness and is very welcoming.
The staff, both managerial and care, are caring, compassionate and cheerful and importantly, adaptable to Dad's changing circumstances and very supportive of me and my sister, keeping me informed of any change in Dad’s circumstances or care.
Due to Dad's declining health, he requires assistance with his nutrition, hydration and general hygiene, this care is carried out with gentleness and compassion.
Meals are always hot when served, well presented and nutritious.

Importantly, Dad appears happy, he responds positively to members of the care team when they come to see him, whether for care needs or just to say hello.

Thank you for your kind words and I will ensure that all departments are made aware of them - care is, of course, a team thing and we are very proud of all of our staff's input into looking after our people.

Prior to Dad becoming a resident, I visited Iceni House Care Home and was given a very informative tour of the home. I was introduced to staff who were very cheerful and helpful. The residents were always happy and clean and contented, they were well cared for. The home always looked and smelt clean and tidy. Dad's room was very pleasant and comfortable. We were invited to join in with activities when we were there which were always well attended by the residents. Dad was very happy there. He was well fed with a good choice of food. I couldn't have asked for anywhere better for Dad to spend his remaining days.

My stepfather was placed here by the hospital for assessment. The facilities and room are fine. I did not like this home at all. Many of my observations relate to what I later found out were the same observations in their last full and very unflattering Inspection. My stepfather's room was freezing when I arrived to visit him - no heating on and he was complaining about being so cold - even I was cold in his room! No dentures in so he couldn't eat his meals, and no help with eating, despite obvious problems feeding himself. Then denials he ever had his dentures on arrival, that their paperwork said he had no dentures on arrival - despite them finally sending me them later after I refused to let him go back there after a serious fall. Very young staff everywhere and a management that needs a better grip, and a stronger presence. The home that he subsequently moved to was a delight and so different to this one.

My mum has been really well cared for, all the staff go the extra mile to try and make sure she is settling in following her move here from hospital. My mum is full of praise for the kindness and the excellent care. The home has a positive, happy atmosphere. The food is excellent and the environment is clean, bright and comfortable.

Our experience of care homes was only from what we had seen on the TV news! So we were terrified of sending our dad to a care home for rehab after a hospital stay. But we could not have been more relieved. Throughout Dad's stay, every member of staff was kind, compassionate, supportive but to us, most crucially in the middle of a pandemic when we could not see our dad, their communication was second to none - and we tested them to their limits with daily phone calls, questions and demands.

They did everything we asked - and more - and got our dad well and back home. We are grateful to them for treating Dad with dignity and respect.

I cannot fault Iceni House Care Home at all. I was initially worried reading reviews of a year ago, but they have definitely turned things around. Lovely manager and all staff. They took excellent care of my mum from July 2020 to Feb 2021.
They seemed to really care about her and her needs. She needed a special chair at one point which was massively delayed due to an NHS delay - The manager and others took this on and constantly reminded until it was received.

The staff became like a second family to me before my mum passed away, they allowed pilot visiting during covid which worked well, and in my mum's last week they allowed me to visit whenever I wanted (after 30 min daily covid tests). A great example to other care homes - Iceni House made it work. A big thank you to them all.

As unfortunately, due to the virus I can only comment on rather a limited experience of being able to talk to my husband through a perspex screen - so as yet have not really fully experienced the home.

Excellent care is given to my mother at all times. Activities on a regular basis, food and refreshments regular and a nice variety. Would definitely recommend this home to a friend. We were very apprehensive with the transition from hospital however the staff quickly resolved any of our worries as a family.

My mother is now coming up to her 92nd birthday and been a resident at the care home for 1 year. In this time she has improved in her mobile health due, I am sure, to the regular exercise. Being the inky close surviving relative living some few miles away, I have been kept well informed of Mother's welfare ar all times. And the staff always make you were welcome, it's like one big family.

Having visited my mum at Iceni House at all times of the day and night, without prior notice we were delighted to find Mum happy, well dressed, fed, clean and contented as well as being supervised by staff on every occasion.

The staff were kind, caring and on hand at all times and made Mum's stay a very happy and comfortable one.

When dad went to Iceni House he was very poorly but with the care from everybody concerned he improved so much in a short space of time. He always looked well presented and he enjoyed the lovely meals and treats. Sadly as expected dad died but the outstanding care continued. We were treated with the utmost dignity and respect from everybody. Well done Iceni keep up the excellent work!

Shane CollierJob Title:Operations Manager

My career began as a Care Assistant and evolved through positions including Home Cook, Deputy Manager, and Registered Manager. This journey has equipped me with a 360-degree insight into care home operations and the needs of both residents and staff.

A significant part of my professional focus has been on supporting and transforming services that require strong leadership, dedication, and a clear improvement strategy. I have successfully turned around homes needing guidance and have also played a central role in commissioning new services. These combined experiences led me to my current role as Operations Manager at Kingsley Healthcare. Since joining the organisation, I have received unwavering support, guidance, and reassurance.
