As soon as I go through the door I am warmly welcomed. I have found all the staff I have met wonderfully compassionate, caring & very special people. Those residents who can are encouraged to join in whatever of the many activities are arranged. It is a very happy Home with staff going above & beyond to make it so.
Thank you for your kind words. Our dedicated team goes above and beyond to ensure that both residents and their loved ones feel valued and well cared for. We are particularly proud of our wonderful activity team, who significantly enhance the lives of our residents.
The staff at Lucerne House go above and beyond to make the residents feel like they have come to stay in a home filled with joy, fun and love. There's a wide variety of activities and plenty of support to help residents participate, and the staff manage to combine care, respect and laughter. It's not just the residents that benefit from all of this - visitors are also made to feel like part of the Lucerne House family.
Thank you so much for this warm review. Our staff are caring and go out of their way to ensure that all our residents are well cared for and have the best life enrichment opportunities.
Our whole experience, from my initial introduction, to the Manager arranging a personal visit to our home to meet and get to know my husband and then his stay for a week worked out perfectly. This home even went as far as picking my husband up and bringing him home as he doesn't travel well in our vehicle. Nothing was too much trouble.
I also felt that they had my welfare and best interests at heart too.
He was comfortable and happy to stay there - high praise indeed as he has been very reluctant to be anywhere other than in his own home being looked after by me!
We have already made arrangements for further breaks later in the year.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review and kind words. It was a delight to have him stay with us, and we will do everything we can to ensure a smooth transition to our lovely care home. We're so glad you were able to leave knowing he will be well cared for. He was happy every day, and his huge smile said it all. We look forward to seeing you both again in the future.
Dad was a resident in Lucerne for three years until he sadly passed away in November 2025. The staff provided exceptional, compassionate care, and unwavering professionalism. They were incredible with my Dad, who was living with dementia, treating him with patience, dignity, and genuine understanding. The team created a warm, reassuring environment where we could see that Dad was safe and loved . Staff consistently went above and beyond, responding to his changing needs with empathy and skill. Their expertise in dementia care is clear, and their kindness brought our family real peace of mind. I wholeheartedly recommend this truly professional 'home from home' to anyone seeking the very best care, and as a family , couldn't have wished for anything better for Dad. Thank you .
Thank you for your wonderful review. Our dementia unit strives to provide those living with dementia the best quality of life possible while managing such a challenging disease. The unit offers reassurance to both residents and their families, ensuring that loved ones can be themselves in a safe,...
My mother June stayed at Lucerne for two years until her passing in Nov this year. Throughout her care she was treated with dignity and respect but most of all love. As a family we were welcomed into the Lucerne fold. Cared for as one of their own as they appreciated that the family are often silent sufferers after the emotional turmoil of putting their loved one in care. Lucerne has a Dr from the local surgery on call, a physio, podiatrist and hairdresser all superb. The meals are cooked by the resident chef with menus to suit every palate. There is an entertainment team in place consisting of Alex, Jan and Kirstie who go out of their way to keep the residents active and interested. The care staff in Ide ward were second to none managed by the lovely Ron. Tea was provided with care by the ever friendly Julie and all this is overseen by the brilliant management team of Sally and Grace
Thank you for your kind response. We take pride in our team approach, where every team member plays a vital role in providing a positive experience for both the resident and their entire family. Building trust is essential, so you can feel confident knowing that your loved one is being well cared for.
I cannot express enough gratitude to the incredible team at Lucerne House for the exceptional care, compassion and patience they have shown while looking after my father who has advanced dementia, can be very unpredictable, confused, agitated and unfortunately even physically aggressive. Despite these challenges the staff have never wavered in their kindness. They treat him with upmost dignity and respect always seeing the person behind the illness rather than judging him by his illness. Every carer, nurse, manager has shown him and us as his family professionalism, genuine love and empathy throughout.
I am truly grateful for the recognition of the exceptional work that our carers do. They are all dedicated and professional, and I am proud to call them part of our amazing team. We take great pride in how we support all our residents living with dementia, as well as the families who navigate this journey alongside them.
Thank you to every one at Lucerne for taking great care of my sister and every one else.
Thank you very much for your generous review. Your sister is an important part of our big family in Lucerne, and her well-being has always been a top priority for us, just like that of all our residents. We feel fortunate to have such caring and professional staff who truly embody the essence of care.
Mum has complex medical needs, all of which are managed effectively.
Thankyou to all the staff at Lucerne House for such special care for Mum + Dad x.
Thank you for your kind feedback. It was a pleasure to care for both of your parents, and all the staff were truly fond of them. We strive to make all residents feel like they are part of one big family. We understand that having a loved one move into care can be overwhelming, and having two family...
and at times a great sense of humour. The staff go out of their way to make life easier for residents and relatives and friends alike.
Thank you for your kind review, We take pride in providing professional care and attention to residents and relatives. Everyone is important to ALL the team at Lucerne House.
was very frightened arriving at Lucerne House but the manager put her at
ease in an instant and before she was out of the car. Inside, it's like
a hotel. The dementia care is exceptional. For the residents it's
quiet voices and gentle hands, constant attention and support with
humour and laughter from the wonderful staff. Visiting relatives too
are treated not only with care and compassion but also to coffee,
tea, cake and even lunch.
Mum's time at Lucerne House was a great comfort for her and a
great comfort for my family and me. We knew she hadn't long to live
and when the time came for end of life care, the exemplary way in
which the nursing staff looked after her during those last days is
something I'll remember and be grateful for forever.
During this time he has been treated with outstanding care and dignity.
The standard of care is exemplary from every member of staff, showing compassion, patience and respectfulness at all times.
Their cheerfulness, empathy and gentle approach, are qualities always present, to both resident (and relative), often during very difficult and demanding times.
My brother's mixed dementia can be challenging at times, but with their caring, professional and knowledgeable approach, I have peace of mind knowing that he couldn't be in better hands.
Lucerne House is a very happy care home providing a huge variety of daily activities, giving stimulation and enjoyment to all residents, to which relatives and visitors are welcome.
Choosing a care home for a loved one was the most difficult decision I have ever made.
But one, I have never regretted, as Lucerne House is exceptional .
Thank you for your fantastic review! We truly value the time we spend with our residents, ensuring that they lead vibrant and fulfilling lives while in our care. Our extensive life enrichment programs are designed to engage residents in meaningful activities, including art classes, music therapy,...
This home is friendly, nothing is too much trouble. Spotlessly clean and provide excellent care to my mum. Food is very good and have activities going on every day. They are treated with dignity and all the staff are excellent. Safety and security is excellent.
Thank you for your kind words. We are delighted that you have such positive things to say about Lucerne and the care that we provide, we love having your mother in our care and are pleased to hear that you are pleased with everything too.
Sadly my father only had a couple of weeks at Lucerne but the care both he and I received was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble. Their knowledge and kindness made a difficult time so much easier. Thank you and I'm sorry he did not have longer with you xx
Thank you for your kind review. Our staff do go that extra mile to ensure that great care is given at all times. It was a pleasure looking after your father, thank you for choosing Lucerne House.
The food is really good as are the choices
The gardens are immaculate
The entertainment staff are really good and my mum loves the music and craft sessions.
The en-suite rooms are spacious and cosy as is the living room and other amenity areas.
Most importantly, my mum is really settled, safe, happy and has lots of fiends in both the staff and residents alike.
Thanks for everything you do at Lucerne
Thank you so much for taking the time to complete such a kind review of your experience here at Lucerne House. It is a pleasure to care for your Mother and we look forward to seeing you soon. I will be sure to pass your feedback onto our team.
I very rarely write reviews... I hadn't been in a dementia ward before and I did wonder (and worry) what it might be like spending a lot of time visiting my Mum in one - somewhere where every resident suffers from the condition. But my time on the Memory Lane ward was a genuinely uplifting experience. There was joy, laughter, innocence, humanity and even some friendships formed. I didn't ever feel uncomfortable.
The nurses and carers were quite simply outstanding - without exception. There was wonderfully supportive, gentle and extremely dignified care given at all times. The care was in plentiful supply too. There was never a time that I couldn't fine a carer or nurse when I needed one. They cared deeply about the families as well as the residents. We were always given detailed updates about Mum. On several occasions, they even brought meals to us when we'd spent the whole day visiting on the ward.
Thank goodness we found Lucerne House. I only wish that we had found it sooner.
Thank you immensely for your thoughtful feedback. Our dedicated staff takes great pride in the compassionate care they provide our residents, treating each individual with warmth and respect. We were truly honoured to have the privilege of caring for your wonderful mother during her time with us....
My late mother was a resident at Lucerne House for nearly two years. Throughout their time, she was treated with unfailing kindness and patience, and I was impressed by the never ending cheerfulness of the staff. Nothing seemed to faze them and they did their utmost to ensure that my mother was comfortable to the end.
Thank you for your kind words. When the decision is made to choose Lucerne to care for their loved ones, we try to ensure that the whole family continue to be involved in their loved ones care. The staff put the care into care here at Lucerne and their cheerfulness is what makes our home special.
Lucerne House is an outstanding home. Every single one of the staff cares deeply about the welfare of our dad. As a family we couldn't have asked for a better place for dad to be cared for. With his advanced dementia the staff are always patient and empathetic to his needs which can be challenging at times. The other thing that really stands out is the way myself and the rest of my family have been welcomed into the Lucerne family. My mum in particular has found new friends and listening ears since Dad has been at Lucerne. I simply cannot praise this home enough. The managers and the team at Lucerne - thank you !
Thank you for your kind words. We take great pride in the care we provide and the opportunities for life enrichment we offer our residents, which enhance their experience at Lucerne House. Our approach is one of whole-home which involves the entire team, ensuring everyone is engaged in providing...
We looked at a number of care homes when trying to find a suitable place for Mum. Barchester Lucerne House Care Home was the only one where we felt 100% comfortable that Mum's needs would be met. We were impressed by the calm, caring atmosphere and well-maintained surroundings at Memory Lane. It was very reassuring to know that Mum was being cared for by carers specially trained in dementia care, during the last six months of her life. Lucerne House comes highly recommended.
Thank you for the positive feedback. At Barchester and Lucerne, we take pride in the excellent care our residents receive. Our staff's training for dementia care empowers us to support our residents in achieving the best quality of life possible.
From the moment he arrived at Lucerne House, he was treated with dignity and respect and surely felt settled there as he didn't try to escape once.
The staff were wonderful with him (and all the other residents living with dementia), demonstrating a real understanding of the disease and almost instinctively knowing how best to manage Dad and how to cajole him into doing the things he needed to.
I cannot speak highly enough of all the staff. From our first contact with the deputy manager, who totally put us at ease at what was a difficult time for us, to our last contact with the head of the dementia unit, who always had time to chat and reassure us, and the carers who stayed behind after the end of their shift to say goodbye to us when we arrived to say our final goodbye to Dad, they were all, without exception, special people.
Thank you for your kind words. We were all fond of your father and he embraced all that Lucerne had to offer. We pride ourselves on the exceptional care we give. Barchester provides in-depth training for all staff on living with dementia which, combined with caring staff, provides excellent care for our residents.

Meet the Team (10)

Hello, my name is Sally and I am General Manager here at Lucerne House, I qualified as an RGN from Plymouth University. I am a passionate nurse with a wealth of experience which includes many years of experience in A and E departments and I was the team lead for a team of community nurses in Dorset.
I have a very active role in the lives of all residents ensuring patient-centred care is delivered by every member of staff to a high standard and within the Barchester values. In my time as a nurse, I have gained valuable experience and knowledge in caring for elderly and terminally ill patients, I believe that a holistic approach is crucial in providing gold-standard care for the individual and their families.
Making the decision to move your loved one into a nursing home can be a daunting experience. Still, I am here to help with that journey ensuring the decision to move is a positive one and I will alleviate those fears and anxieties by talking you through that transition. I will ensure that you or your loved ones are the most important at all times by listening and answering your questions. I regard myself as a competent and supportive nurse who empowers and motivates residents to live fulfilling life.

Hello, my name is Grace and I am the Deputy Manager at Lucerne House.
I qualified in 2010 as a Registered General Nurse from Anglia Ruskin University in Essex. I previously worked in a Barchester Care Home for over a year, and I was very impressed with their values as a company. I moved to north London where I then worked in a busy NHS hospital, before progressing to management roles. I also worked as a Nurse Educator, and became a Specialist Nurse in spinal injuries. I moved to Devon in 2019, where I worked as a Specialist Nurse in Dermatology.
I really enjoy my life in beautiful Devon and hope to stay here for many years to come. I am so happy to have returned to a Barchester home, and the residents and staff at Lucerne are exceptional. I am very team orientated and I really enjoy the holistic approach Lucerne provides for their residents. I am passionate about providing a high standard of care and also in developing and supporting staff, ensuring they feel valued along the way.

My role at Lucerne House involves supporting the General Manager by maintaining and managing the financial, recruitment and general administration systems.
I started at Barchester in 2020, as a care assistant at Lucerne House. In 2021, I took on the role of administrator which I use my previous professional experience in finance, administration and accountancy.
I feel privileged to have secured my current role supporting the residents and families at Lucerne, and if you ever need anything, then my door is always open.

Hello, my name is Chris, Head of Maintenance at Lucerne House.

In my spare time, I enjoy working with computers and also sound engineering and music production

Hello, my name is Darren, I have just joined the Barchester group and I am very excited to be the Head Chef at Lucerne House.
Having come from the luxury hospitality sector I intend to bring my skills and knowledge into the kitchen to produce nutritious, seasonal, fresh and delicious recipes for our residents. My team and I take great pride and passion in our work and believe this translates into the food we serve.

My name is Marilyn and I have worked at Lucerne House for over 15 years, and I have been Head Housekeeper since 2013. The home is a warm, caring and fun environment to work in. I am here to ensure that all cleaning and laundry services are to a very high standard, and I enjoy my job.

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to being the Head of Activities, and have recently become NAPA level 2 qualified in Activity Provision.
In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.
