Mum had dementia and certainly had some lovely staff looking after her.
Thank you for your review. The unwavering dedication of our entire staff reflects their deep love for their work.
He had a catheter and bag fitted and was prone to get infections. I visited approx once a week until I was laid up with a bad hip but when I started visiting again I could not get anyone to open the door. On my last visit which was in November 2023 I noticed that the catheter bag had been removed. I tried to speak to someone but no one was available. Next, I heard he had passed away so on the 19/12/23. I collected the death certificate, then phoned the manageress and was told by her I was not next of kin which was lies as she had known from the start I was named as such with the lady from social services.
Thank you for your email. We pride ourselves on the excellent care our residents receive. Any changes to a resident's plan of care is made after consulting their GP. Anyone who would like further information and has lasting power of attorney are able to do so by going through the correct channels.
My mum suffers dementia, she has been at Lucerne House for fourteen months... I cannot fault the love and care that the staff provide. It is such a sad and cruel disease. Everyone at Lucerne are so welcoming. They always have time for us. I know Mum is safe and looked after. It's like a home from home. The staff go above and beyond, always with a smile. They are all very special people, I cannot thank them enough. I strongly feel they deserve better pay and sick pay. The high rates we pay should enable this.
Thank you for your feedback. I am delighted to hear that having your mum living here has been a positive experience for you. Our team is dedicated to providing compassionate and exceptional care to every resident, ensuring they live their best lives. At Barchester, we are committed to regularly reviewing pay rates to ensure they exceed the minimum wage.
I couldn’t have been happier with how my grandad was cared for. All of the staff were on it and went above and beyond in my opinion. I would happily recommend it to anyone. Thank you for caring, it made a real difference.
Thank you for your kind words. In addition to our caring team, we have a strong ethos of a whole-home approach which ensures a positive experience for our residents and their loved ones.
We're a large family, so there was a procession of visitors to see Mum on a daily basis, and we were always made to feel very welcome.
Mum was clearly very happy at Lucerne, participating in the activities and generally experiencing the best possible quality of life given her deteriorating health.
We have nothing but praise for the general manager and her amazing team, and we will forever be grateful for the care and love that Mum received at Lucerne House.
Thank you for your kind comments. It is always our pleasure to take care of our residents and provide them with the best possible care. All of our staff members were very fond of your mother, and we are delighted that she enjoyed her time here at Lucerne House and could participate in many activities.
I visited my friend recently after his move from another care home and I was so happy that the move had been made. My friend wasn't well but the genuine love, care and compassion from the staff made me feel so at ease, knowing that he was getting the best possible care. Staff were so attentive. There were drinks and snacks within his reach and staff checked on him regularly; asking if he needed anything. I could tell that the staff had a genuine passion for the roles that they have and I cannot thank you all enough for making his last months the best they could be.
Thank you for your positive comments, we pride ourselves on the care and compassion shown to all of our residents. We ensure that the process of moving into our home is a positive one for not only for the resident but also for their families and loved ones.
I am so pleased to have found a care home with such wonderful staff and facilities. You hear such terrible stories about care homes. So I am lucky to have found you.
Thank you for your comments. We are pleased that you are happy with the care and standards that we provide.
Moving Mum, who has dementia, out of her home of 50-plus years was a traumatic experience for our whole family. However, the transition to her living in Lucerne House couldn't have gone better. The management is helpful and friendly, and the staff are absolute angels! Mum loves them, and to know she is safe, less lonely, and so brilliantly cared for is a huge comfort to us all.
Thank you for your kind words. We know that moving a loved one into a care setting can be a daunting one which is why we take such good care with the transition. All the staff are so fond of Mum and we are so pleased that she has settled in so well.
Grandad moved here for end-of-life care from the hospital, he was 98 years old and the improvement he made in 6 weeks was amazing, even though he wasn’t mobile he was included in all activities which were great fun. The staff and level of care given at the time he was there were exceptional. I genuinely cannot fault a thing about this care home.
Thank you for your lovely comments, we were all very fond of your grandfather. We encourage everyone to join in with our person-centred activities and the residents really do have a great opportunity to do so much here at Lucerne. We are very proud of the care we give and are really pleased that...
Mum went into Lucerne for respite care, she has now decided to stay permanently. The staff are all lovely and very caring. We are able to visit whenever we can together with great-grandchildren. It's a lovely family environment. They have activities every day but also her room is lovely if she wants more quiet time.
Thank you for your positive feedback. Your mum has settled in really well and is a popular resident in the Lucerne family, she loves being involved in the fantastic activities that we have on offer daily.
Lucerne was fantastic, with excellent facilities, the standard of care and liaison with families. The manager and deputy manager were delightful, they went above and beyond to be as helpful, supportive and caring as possible. Separate dementia 'Memory Lane' unit is an excellent idea and ensures care is delivered in a bespoke and safe environment. Fantastic extended team and activities manager, they all work together to make the experience of moving into a care facility as seamless as possible.
Thank you for your positive comment. We agree having the separate unit works well and ensures that all residents who live in their communities get to live their best life with specific activities to meet individual needs.
The wonderful welcome we received and the outstanding care and genuine interest from the whole team, from the manager and administrators to the lovely reception staff, activities staff, carers, nurses and catering staff, is outstanding, and it is a genuine pleasure to visit her in such a pleasant environment and to see the residents are all receiving wonderful treatment delivered with humour and genuine warmth.
Thank you for your lovely feedback. I am glad that your mother has settled so well. It is a concern when transferring to another home as any change can be distruptive and unsetting, we try our utmost to make any transition a positive one, with a whole home approach. We hope that we have made you all feel as welcome as your loved one.
The nursing care was administered with genuine compassion. I cannot thank the whole team for such marvelous support in his last days.
Thank you for such a positive review of Lucerne House. Our main asset is the staff who are very caring and always go that extra mile to ensure the well-being of our residents, we aim to also support relatives and families, especially for end-of-life care as they become part of the Lucerne too.
Mum is extremely happy at Barchester Lucerne House, she feels safe, secure, cared for and she is always talking about how wonderful the carers are. Nothing is too much trouble and she is transported to appointments without any quibble. There are loads of activities available and the entertainment team are good at encouraging residents to participate. When I visit, I feel very welcome.
Thank you for such a positive review of Barchester Lucerne House. We take pride in ensuring that all residents are treated individually and the activities we offer are tailored to each and every person's likes and dislikes. Taking residents to their appointments is an example of what we can facilitate to ensure residents' well-being is taken care of.
The outstanding CQC report must not be used as an accurate reflection of this care home as many things have changed or don't even exist that are contained in the report. We suggest if you are considering the home that family visit at various hours of the day and night and do not rely on empty promises from Management. The rooms are very small and old fashioned with poor quality furnishings that are desperately in need of replacement.
We are sorry to see that after several years you still have unresolved issues, we can assure you we made every attempt to be prompt in answering your concerns...
Lucerne House in contrast to previous nursing homes locally, has, for the last 4 years been consistent in high levels of care for my wife with Huntington's disease, never failing to maintain high professional care but always with good humour and strong empathy from the staff. The staff are clearly carefully selected and mindful of the people in their care needs and not bringing their own concerns and personal issues into the workplace. Brilliant, professional, caring with great empathy and cheerful too.
Thank you for your kind words. All the staff here at Lucerne take pride in their job and really put care into the title of carer. It is also our honour to be looking after your lovely wife and having a great relationship with you and your extended family.
My wife has been a resident of the Shillingford Unit at Lucerne House nursing home for many years. She has always been treated with respect and patience and given first-class care. The staff are efficient, positive in the outlook accompanied with a good sense of humour. I would like to thank everybody for looking after my wife during these difficult times.
My sister and I and our family want to thank everyone who looked after our mum/nanny and for all, they did even when she passed. Love to you all.
Thank you so much for your kind words. We are very proud of the dedication and care shown towards our lovely residents. All the staff were very fond of your Mother/Nanny and it was a privilege to care for her and share her last few months with you and your family.
My dad came into Lucerne House needing extra dementia care and what turned out to be end of life care. It wasn't an easy time for him but the staff were exemplary.
Thank you for your comments, What an honour it was to care for him, we are very proud of the exceptional care we deliver to all residents regardless of need.
My mum was in Lucerne for 6 months until she died in June. The building itself is very nice, clean and bright. The room my mum was in was quite small. The care and nursing staff were great during a difficult Covid time with many individual staff very caring and patient. Obviously all overworked of course but that was the same across all homes. The dementia unit was very well run. The reception staff was lovely and very welcoming. The activities staff were pleasant apart from one older lady who was very blunt and unsympathetic with patients. There were quite a few staff changes in the couple of months before my mum died which I think caused a few administrative problems - certainly, their finance systems could do with a review as there were errors that we had to deal with.
Thank you for your valuable feedback. We are very proud of the commitment and care shown by all our staff which makes Lucerne a wonderful home. We have addressed any issues raised and I want to apologise for the difficulties that you experienced with the administration and finance department, these issues have been escalated within Barchester.

Meet the Team (10)

Hello, my name is Sally and I am General Manager here at Lucerne House, I qualified as an RGN from Plymouth University. I am a passionate nurse with a wealth of experience which includes many years of experience in A and E departments and I was the team lead for a team of community nurses in Dorset.
I have a very active role in the lives of all residents ensuring patient-centred care is delivered by every member of staff to a high standard and within the Barchester values. In my time as a nurse, I have gained valuable experience and knowledge in caring for elderly and terminally ill patients, I believe that a holistic approach is crucial in providing gold-standard care for the individual and their families.
Making the decision to move your loved one into a nursing home can be a daunting experience. Still, I am here to help with that journey ensuring the decision to move is a positive one and I will alleviate those fears and anxieties by talking you through that transition. I will ensure that you or your loved ones are the most important at all times by listening and answering your questions. I regard myself as a competent and supportive nurse who empowers and motivates residents to live fulfilling life.

Hello, my name is Grace and I am the Deputy Manager at Lucerne House.
I qualified in 2010 as a Registered General Nurse from Anglia Ruskin University in Essex. I previously worked in a Barchester Care Home for over a year, and I was very impressed with their values as a company. I moved to north London where I then worked in a busy NHS hospital, before progressing to management roles. I also worked as a Nurse Educator, and became a Specialist Nurse in spinal injuries. I moved to Devon in 2019, where I worked as a Specialist Nurse in Dermatology.
I really enjoy my life in beautiful Devon and hope to stay here for many years to come. I am so happy to have returned to a Barchester home, and the residents and staff at Lucerne are exceptional. I am very team orientated and I really enjoy the holistic approach Lucerne provides for their residents. I am passionate about providing a high standard of care and also in developing and supporting staff, ensuring they feel valued along the way.

My role at Lucerne House involves supporting the General Manager by maintaining and managing the financial, recruitment and general administration systems.
I started at Barchester in 2020, as a care assistant at Lucerne House. In 2021, I took on the role of administrator which I use my previous professional experience in finance, administration and accountancy.
I feel privileged to have secured my current role supporting the residents and families at Lucerne, and if you ever need anything, then my door is always open.

Hi, my name is Lalaine, and I am the Head of Unit in our Memory Lane community at Lucerne House. I am a dedicated RGN with over 21 years of experience in working in busy hospital environments and nursing homes. I am responsible for delivering high standards of nursing care to residents, whilst ensuring that they are happy, comfortable and safe in our home

Hello, my name is Chris, Head of Maintenance at Lucerne House.
I have been working for Barchester for two and a half years in my current role. Prior to joining Barchester, I was a self-employed plumber, for 15 years, serving my community in Leeds. I then moved to the Southwest, taking on a role in a local school for 10 years as their Maintenance person.
In my spare time, I enjoy working with computers and also sound engineering and music production

Hello, my name is Darren, I have just joined the Barchester group and I am very excited to be the Head Chef at Lucerne House.
Having come from the luxury hospitality sector I intend to bring my skills and knowledge into the kitchen to produce nutritious, seasonal, fresh and delicious recipes for our residents. My team and I take great pride and passion in our work and believe this translates into the food we serve.

My name is Marilyn and I have worked at Lucerne House for over 15 years, and I have been Head Housekeeper since 2013. The home is a warm, caring and fun environment to work in. I am here to ensure that all cleaning and laundry services are to a very high standard, and I enjoy my job.

I have been at Lucerne House since November 2011. I started in the kitchen before moving to the Activities Team. I have a background in music and theatre and was very happy to be able to share this with residents in the home. After a short while, I was promoted to being the Head of Activities, and have recently become NAPA level 2 qualified in Activity Provision.
In the role of Head of Activities, I am focused on ensuring that residents can continue to enjoy existing hobbies and interests, but also pursue new avenues of stimulation and activity. I am always looking to bring new experiences and means of engagement to the home, be that through massage therapy, yoga, engaging with the local community or many other things. At Lucerne House, our person-centred approach allows us to make every resident feel valued and comfortable enough to express themselves however they see fit.
My goal is to ensure that every person living at Lucerne House feels confident enough to make independent decisions and that each of them have a robust choice of activities and interests to engage with. I am always open to suggestions, so if you do have any, please do not hesitate to let me know.

As the resident physiotherapist at Lucerne House, my priority is optimising their functional abilities, independence and quality of life.
At Lucerne, rehabilitation programmes are tailored specifically to the individual to ensure that they meet their goals.
I have vast experience and knowledge in rehabilitation, including postgraduate degree in Managing Complex Posture and a master’s degree in Rehabilitation.
