The Old Rectory was rated overall 'Outstanding' CQC in May 2017, the home won the Best Care Team in the South West at the best Care awards, the home was finalist in the best care home manager and best activity coordinator at the Best Care awards, and a finalist in the national dementia awards for best activities coordinator. The home is a nationally accredited dementia Butterfly Kitemark home.

A fully functioning pub, a cafe and a cinema are recent additions to the home to enhance and promote a full and stimulating daily lifestyle

The home offers offers a graceful lifestyle in beautiful surroundings, near the Pinhoe region in Exeter retaining many of its original features, and is a Grade II listed building.

Considerably extended in recent years it offers predominantly modern purpose-built accommodation with most rooms on the ground floor which have views over the mature gardens. The Old Rectory has 47 places with three lounges, two dining rooms and two sunny conservatories.

My late husband was a resident at the Old Rectory for only a short period of time. I was given a great deal of support and consideration, and the Care team were kind. The residents who were mobile seemed very happy, and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. Lots of activities and entertainments for
those who were able to ‘get around’, and the surroundings and outdoor areas felt ‘homely’. Due to the situation with my husband's health and the pandemic, he was unable to benefit from the facilities mentioned, and I cannot give a precise comment on the food and drink because he was on a restricted diet. However, it must be said that I was permitted to visit him twice a day at a time that was crucial to us both and difficult for the home and for that, I am especially thankful to the manager and also to her and the medical team at the care hjome who was all in full support in aiding me to get him home for his last few days.

My aunt received good care in her time at The Old Rectory. My family are very grateful to the staff for their sensitivity and compassion during her final days there, especially as we were unable to visit her.

I have been helping here for a very short space of time, however, the care provision, atmosphere, love and compassion felt as soon as you walk in the door is absolutely outstanding! There is no doubt in my mind that every single staff member cares deeply for their resident, from the cleaning staff right
through to the owners and directors of the company, every single resident is treated with respect, love, fondness and dignity. I for one would highly recommend The Old Rectory to everyone. They are a pleasure to support and I absolutely love seeing how everyone smiles on a daily basis.

Although my father was in The Old Rectory nursing home for less than a week, he really enjoyed being there and was treated with loving respect and professional care.

My mother had been a patient in your home over 2 periods over the last 3 months, sadly on 1/8/18 my mother passed away in the home. The staff were very professional and whilst my mother was alive they made her stay a very pleasurable experience.
The staff were very supportive to her and her needs and
were always informing us as a family of changes to my mother's condition or if anything had happened.
I would like to take this moment to say a massive thank you to you all, I have worked in the care sector for 17 years and I know how hard it can be but to remind you that what you do has a massive impact, not just on your patients but the families also, so thank you.

With some trepidation, we brought my mother to The Old Rectory not knowing how she would adjust to living here having lived independently in her own flat for six years. We had no need to be concerned. My mother was made very welcome and immediately took to the activities that the home organised. Special
mention should be made of the man who sings old favourites in the lounge - which is normally packed when it is his turn to appear. Altogether it has been a very smooth transition and we are now confident my mother will be happy here.

My Mother-in-law received excellent care at the Old Rectory Nursing home. Her care was delivered with compassion, dignity and loving care. We could not have wished for a better place for our mother. The nursing team delivered and managed her medication regime, she was comfortable and pain-free. The
home has so many things to offer with a friendly, homely environment. They were an amazing team. Nothing was too much.

The kindness and care my mother was given was first class. My mother was on end of life care and presented the nursing and care staff a great deal of their time, which they aways gave with a happy smile, compassion and their expert training.
Always doing everything they could to keep my mother happy
and comfortable. So often when I was approaching my mother's room, I could hear the care staff seeing to mum, how they were speaking to mum was so lovely. No wonder my mum was happy, even though she suffered sometimes they did their best to make sure she didn't.

We found this home to be great for mum, the carers love and cared for her right to the end. We couldn't have asked for more. If we had any problems I spoke to the manager and we came to an agreement to suit both sides which was great, although maybe not perfect. The level of care was very good.

The care & kindness shown to my Dad in his short stay here was amazing, we loved to visit as the same welcome was made to us. A fun loving friendly team, that made my Dads last months a happy time.
The staff were all so amazing, making this feel like a real family home, we can't thank them enough,
and will definitely be still popping in for a cuppa, when we are passing.

I have never been in a home like this with such dignity and respect for the residents. The staff are more like friends than staff, you can have a laugh with them and see that they love what they do. They have so much patience and respect for other people's wishes and are brilliant when it comes to end
of life care, although my friend was there a couple days until she unfortunately passed away. The home, food, facilities are all brilliant and I would advise this home to anyone who is looking for a 5* home. It isn't a nursing home, it's a family home where you're welcome with open arms. The staff work 6-12 hour shifts and always have a smile on their face! Hats off to them ALL.
A brilliant home, with an outstanding atmosphere. Well done to you all.

Kerry Dempsey

Job Title: Home Manager - The Old Rectory Nursing Home Joined: 2020

As of June 2020, Kerry Dempsey has taken on the role of Home Manager and Group Clinical Lead here at the Old Rectory Nursing Home and the Southern Healthcare group.


She is a Registered Mental Health Nurse and has worked in the NHS and social care sector for the past 30 years. She has experience in managing hospitals and care homes across the whole of the South West.


We are very excited to have her as a part of our team here, making use of her extensive knowledge of the care world as well as her bubbly self in and around the home.


Kerry is always welcome to any phone calls or emails if any relatives/friends would like to ever get in touch.
