My husband spent one night in respite care which should have been 6 weeks. He returned from dialysis needing oxygen. He could not alert the care staff so he phoned me. I phoned the home but there was no reply. I was forced to call an ambulance from my home. 3 hours later the ambulance arrived. It was
a very stressful experience for both of us. The home smelt. Spilt food was not cleared up for days.
Reply from Emma, Home Manager at Sovereign HouseWe are sorry to hear about your negative experience. We have investigated the comments made thoroughly. We are surprised to see this review, as when we last spoke regarding your husband you assured me you understood what had happened and how the home had acted in the best interest and followed the discharge instructions from the Hospital. We understand this was an issue with the discharge information and medication supplied by the hospital was not correctly prescribed. We would recommend you issue a complaint to the NHS. I checked up on your husband after he had arrived at the home to ensure he was settling in okay. Following this our care staff assisted him in calling you and showed him where the nurse call bell was as well as leaving this by his side. We were unfortunately not made aware by him that he was feeling unwell. From our documentation, the ambulance arrived c. 20 minutes later. We hope your husband is doing well. I would be happy to discuss any comments with you in person.

My mother has been at SH since December of 2023 to present April 2024. She has been provided with excellent care. The staff are very caring and compassionate and became our extended family. They are prompt and attend to her every need. Staff go above and beyond to take care of the residents. SH made
a very difficult time in my parents' lives bearable. My mother feels cared for and safe. A high level of care was provided and kept family informed and involved. It’s been a very pleasant experience.
Reply from Rahi Joshi, Marketing Associate at Sovereign HouseThank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We are delighted to know your mother is happy and comfortable with us. We always work hard to support our users with the best care possible. I will ensure your kind words are passed on to the team. Kind regards.

My relative was discharged from hospital to Sovereign House and after 6 weeks his care needs and wishes were reviewed. He had found that he felt much safer and happier with carers around him day and night. Despite formerly living in a warden-controlled complex, the social worker felt he would benefit
from a care setting. He was lucky to be offered a place at Sovereign House where he had already made positive relationships with staff and some of the other residents. He loves his room and has been promised it will be redecorated. His health is relatively stable at present, and he has been able and encouraged to contribute positively to the life of the community. He is happy to live there and we are grateful for the care he receives and seek to support the staff in caring for his needs. A lovely environment.
Reply from Rahi Joshi, Marketing Associate at Sovereign HouseThank you for your kind words. Your feedback is very much appreciated and we are delighted to know your relative is doing well with us, we ensure to maintain high care standards at all times. I will forward your kind sentiments to the home team.
Kind regards.

Since my nan has been at the home, the staff have gone above and beyond to make my nan welcome. The rooms are lovely and clean, Nan enjoys her meals and being Irish (my nan), they are good at making cups of tea and bringing biscuits. As a family, we can't thank Sovereign House enough for making a difficult
time more bearable. They continue to meet my nan's medical needs and are quick to contact us when concerned. Thank you Sovereign House, you mean a lot to us!

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
The home and room were very pleasant - staff are friendly and, as most work some places more than others, some got to know my mum's needs better than others. Food was good but unfortunately not to my mum's liking as she never liked wet food, gravy or sauces, but they tried to adapt them. The staff are
kept busy and it would be good if visitors had a coffee machine or facilities, they could make a drink and leave a donation. I never met management except the discharge coordinator who kept us up to date. A negative, my mother could not be taken to a 100th birthday party in the lounge as they are so short on wheelchairs! I believe they have only three!
Reply from Carolyn Peacock, Manager at Sovereign HouseThank you for taking the time to leave a review. I am pleased that you found the home and room pleasant. We have refurbished all the communal areas at Sovereign House and are continuing with redecoration of all residents' bedrooms.
We complete staffing rotas, with the aim that staff work consistently, in an allocated area within the home, so they get to know residents and develop professional relationships and knowledge of residents' preferences.
Tea, coffee and cold drinks are available at all times within the kitchenette areas on each floor for visitors to make drinks. Following your feedback we have completed notices to welcome visitors to use the facilities and will also discuss this with visitors as we welcome them to the home.
Further wheelchairs are now available for transfer of residents and this will continue to be monitored that we have sufficient to meet residents needs.

My mum thinks of this home as a hotel, she likes living here. She is happy with the staff but doesn't like some of the food and fluids now as they have to be prepared in a certain way. The staff are friendly to me when I visit or phone.

I was a resident at Sovereign House for 12-weeks following the amputation of my right leg due to the complications of diabetes. I was treated with kindness and dignity by the most hardworking staff I have ever come across. I was not in the best of health when I arrived, but they gave me back my self-esteem
and encouraged me to do things I thought were beyond my capabilities. I will be forever grateful to them.

My mum recently spent 2 weeks in Sovereign House. She should have been in 6 weeks but it was very obvious that she was not getting the care she needed so we removed her as soon as we could. Overall, there does not appear to be any management control and staff are left to their own devices. She was being
given 5 doses of laxatives a day and also, on discharge, we luckily quickly realised that they had not sent all her tablets out with her - this could have been life-threatening.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.480)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.480) out of 10 for Sovereign House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.530 for Sovereign House is calculated as follows: ( (141 Excellents x 5) + (59 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 217 Ratings = 4.53
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.95 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Sovereign House is based on 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.95
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 18 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
