Thornton Lodge is currently caring for our mother. It was the hardest decision we as a family have ever had to make in our lives. The owner, manager and all the staff there went out of their way to ease our distress at the time. Their approach to the level of care provided is consistent, caring and
empathic towards all the residents. They strive to maintain the dignity of our mother at all times. They are intuitive to her needs and so very patient during difficult times. The staff appear to really care for our mother over and beyond it being their job. Nothing is too much trouble for anyone and they are at all times eager to meet the ever unfolding needs of our mother, as with the other residents. The home is clean and well maintained. Food is constantly on offer and individual needs/likes catered for. The calm ambience and emotional warmth provided to our mother maintains stability and reduces many of her anxieties. So appreciative ALL of the staff at Thornton Lodge.

After 3 months in a different nursing home lying flat on her back, mum was transferred to Thornton Lodge. After 24 hours mum was up in a wheelchair having breakfast and lunch with other residents. After 3 days mum was staying up for tea. After a week she had had a bath and tried walking. She was now
using a commode or toilet rather than a bedpan. After a week and a half, she was taken on a trip out. She regularly gets involved with the daily activities all after being told she wasn't capable of moving. Thank you!

Although my family visits were infrequent, we always felt very welcome and listened to by all of the staff. The personal approach was very helpful and we felt reassured by key members, nursing staff, owner, manager, GP etc that our uncle was cared for with genuine respect and dignity for his situation.
The premises needs a lot of improvements but this was never hidden. I cannot comment on my uncles daily routine of care other than he always spoke of Thornton Lodge as his home which I know he wouldn't be able to say had he not been cared for properly.
Reply from Paul Gill, Owner at Thornton Lodge Care HomeThank you for your review. You are very correct in saying the above...As you know we are slowly improving the home and classed as a "work in progress". Our main emphasis is the care of the residents and they are looked after at all times in a safe environment. Your uncle is dearly missed by all. We treat every resident with the dignity they deserve and are regarded a member of a big family. As you mentioned correctly this was his home.
If we can be of any further help, please do not hesitate to contact us. Kind Regards.

Staff at the care home have always treated my Mother in a compassionate and dignified manner, and appear to develop authentic supportive and caring relationships with the residents. I have also found management both approachable and easy to talk to, and have felt listened to whenever issues have come
up.

Now that the home have employed an activities coordinator there are more opportunities for stimulation, which is especially important for my Mother, who suffers with dementia. I look forward to this role growing, and welcome increasing variety of activities on offer.

The inner decor is currently under refurbishment, and is already starting to look both brighter and cleaner.

Reply from Paul Gill, Senior Management at Thornton Lodge Care HomeThanks for your review Marc. As we have spoken many times, we treat every resident with the compassion and in a dignified manner which makes all residents comfortable. I am pleased that you find us approachable and that we have listened, as I believe we help to look after the residents families as well as the residents.
The refurbishment is taking a little longer than hoped, but next thing are the carpets and chairs. Once this is done, hopefully will look even more brighter.

In process of getting new carpets and chairs very slow. Often smells of urine. Several staff seem young and inexperienced although appear kind. Residents mostly unstimulated. Cleanliness of residents not as good as it should be. Sometimes no staff in the room and possibility of residents falling. Generally
residents seem well cared for but because of the high prevalence of dementia, there is a depressing air which is inevitable.

Very friendly caring home. My mother has been looked after very well and every need has been taken care of. There is always someone at the end of the p[hone to speak to and they keep us informed of any issues I am very happy with this care home and would not hesitate to recommend the home.

My mother has lived at Thornton Lodge for over 3 years. The staff are very kind and helpful and I know she will be looked after. They now have an entertainments officer who has organised several events to keep the residents minds active.
The home is in need of a refurbishment, which is currently being
carried out, albeit at a rather slow pace, but apart form that, the care is excellent.

Current Review Score: 8.8 (8.840)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.8 (8.840) out of 10 for Thornton Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.408 for Thornton Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (33 Excellents x 5) + (34 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 71 Ratings = 4.408
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.432 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Thornton Lodge Care Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 = 3.55
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.8 = 0.882
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
