My husband came to Bowerfield House 2 days before the first lockdown in March 2020. He was moved from another care home because he needed the next level of care. the level of care for my husband has been wonderful, I cannot fault it. He has been loved as well as cared for well during these very fraught
times. The home is beginning to look lovely with the improvements that are being made.

I cannot speak highly enough of the staff at Bowerfield House and their care of my mother. They are her friends, not just her carers. During the lockdowns when I was unable to visit her, they kept me informed on all matters relating to my mum. They even sent me photographs of mum on her birthday. I
have great praise also for the current manager who keeps me updated via weekly emails. Nothing is too much trouble for the manager and her staff. I am very grateful to them all.

I would definitely not recommend Bowerfield House. Their CQC rating states Needs Improvement. This is an understatement. My mother had late-stage dementia, couldn’t talk, walk, was bed bound and all basic needs had to be anticipated. She had 2 falls within a week, had bedsores. Another resident was
found in her bed, twice, causing her injury and trauma. From June to her death in November, she had only three one to one activities. When we Skyped, mum was dishevelled, not wearing her glasses, no duvet, only a thin blanket, other people’s possessions in the room. Mum was skin and bone when she died. Management was a disgrace, serving her daughters with a grievance for making too many calls. The service manager was rude and brusque. Had no compassion. Massive recruitment of staff. We were not allowed to see mum on her deathbed. Management hid symptoms from GP and family. When mum died, we obtained her care records. What we found was appalling and distressing. We’re forwarding our findings to the CQC.

Thank you for your review. The concerns raised and investigated through our own internal complaints process and LA safe guarding. The investigation outcomes have been found unsubstantiated, both internally and externally. We are committed to providing the highest level of care and are always available to answer any questions the people living with us or their next of kin may have.

Wonderful care home and I would highly recommend! My mum is being cared for by them and was admitted from hospital. We receive regular updates. They have activities on a regular basis, interacting with the residents all day. All the staff we have met are lovely and caring. This has been a truly difficult
time for all of us and even more so with covid but we feel extremely confident she is on the very best hands.

Bowerfield House is an exceptional care home. The care my mum received was just amazing. A caring, compassionate home, full of kindness. From reception staff to carers and the nurses, I could not have asked for more. Always treating my mum and me with the utmost respect. Mum's dignity was kept until
her passing.

My father was a resident of Bowerfield House.

The care and friendliness of the manager and caring staff is second to none.

They even cared for us as visitors, giving us drinks and even sandwiches towards the end of dads life.

They shaved him, washed him, spoke to him and were so sympathetic

to the end.

Absolutely fantastic.

My Husband was transferred to Bowerfield House from the local NHS trust to see out the last days of his life. The care and attention he received during his time there was second to none and I am full of praise for all the team from the Manager to all the Carers who looked after him both night and day
during his time there.
Even though there was a Covid-19 Pandemic taking place outside the home at the time I was allowed to stay with him in isolation in his beautifully appointed en suite room and for this, I will be eternally grateful.

My wife was resident in Bowerfield House for 15 months until late March 2020. The home has a small core of superb hard-working staff with commitment. Nevertheless, standards were repeatedly compromised by inadequate recruitment and retention and inflexibility of the utilisation of resources. I was therefore
compelled to provide additional care for my wife at times of pressure. Many quality carers and nurses who arrived with enthusiasm were soon to become disillusioned and the attraction of other establishments became a magnet to their ambitions. The home was then left with a merry go round of agency staff with (bar rare exceptions) little knowledge of, or feeling for, the residents and their individual needs. Potentially valuable and promising new young recruits were lost.
There is an excellent programme of activities. Food is adequate but lacking variety and became scarce between tea and breakfast.
Interior recently renovated, exterior shabby and urgently requiring upgrade.

Carers do a great job considering the staffing level. The upstairs lounge could do with being refurnished. Furniture in a dowdy condition, riped and dirty looking (not in the same condition as downstairs lounge).

Moved mum from here due to poor levels of care, particularly at weekends, no idea how they got a good CQC rating. Insufficient staff, many at weekends have no interest in their job. Staff spend a lot of time filling in forms at the dining tables, often with little attempt at interaction with residents.
Record keeping is poor leading to some incidents not being properly documented (despite the form filling) with the result that the best care is not always administered. Food is poor with little choice and residents mainly eat their meals in the lounge area on their knee, they're not encouraged to sit at the dining table (usually being used by staff anyway). Staff rated as satisfactory because some are very good but others aren't. Activities are rated as satisfactory - a recent improvement with the hiring, eventually, of an activities coordinator but only part time, otherwise residents are left in front of the TV. Management rated poor due to poor response to recent care incident.

Mum only moved into Bowerfield House a few months before her death. She was made to feel very welcome by the staff. Her health was such that she needed daily and regular care, which was duly given with a smile and willingness.
I thank the staff for making her time at the home as comfortable as possible.
It was a great comfort to me to know she was being well cared for. Her room was clean, airy and bright and though prone to nocturnal wanderings, I'm sure she found her bed comfy!
Many thanks to all the staff.

My mother has been in the above home for 9 years. The home has been improved over the last 2 years making a big difference not much brighter. The staff are good in general by the turnover in management is worrying. My mother is looked after very well and seems content, she eats well and looks clean.
My mother suffers from severe dementia and must be dressed and fed by the staff and is also immobile.

My partner has settled in very well, needs supervising re shaving and bathing and taking care of his dentures, but not had a shave the last 3 times I have visited. Top dentures lost and today no bottom dentures which I have reported to the staff. Overall I have no complaints, I think the care is second
to none.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.266)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.266) out of 10 for Bowerfield House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.466 for Bowerfield House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (74 Excellents x 5) + (25 Goods x 4) + (19 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 118 Ratings = 4.466
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Bowerfield House Nursing Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 26 registered maximum number of service users is 5.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
