The Review Score of 8.9 (maximum of 10) for Bowerfield House Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.
a) The Average Rating is 4 out of 5 from 11 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Bowerfield House Nursing Home in Google's Search Results - more info
b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.
a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.
The Average Rating of 3.954 for Bowerfield House Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (41 Excellents x 5) + (61 Goods x 4) + (17 Satisfactorys x 3) + (6 Poors x 2) + (6 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 131 Ratings = 3.954
b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'
The 5 points available are broken down as follows:
4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.
1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.
If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.
The 4.962 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Bowerfield House Nursing Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:
3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4
Target of 5.2 positive Reviews (26 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 5 Reviews ÷ 5.2 Target = 0.962
When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

My father suffered from dementia for over four years and for the last year and a bit of his life was cared for by the staff at Bowerfield House. He was always well looked after, cared for and given every opportunity to participate as to any activity in the nursing home. He was treated with dignity at all times with good food provided.

Pleased with mum's care.
All staff are considerate and management is approachable and helpful.
Some agency staff and nurses are not so good but to be fair, in my experience, that's not unusual.

The staff at Bowerfield; managers, nurses, carers, catering staff and admin staff were always professional and supportive to me and my father during my mums 8 year stay at the home. My mother's behaviour could be challenging and the staff always treated her with dignity and respect and I would say, love. To the very end, they were kind to my mum and my father with Alzheimer's. Each played their part until her death 3 weeks ago.

My dad has been cared for at Bowerfield for 18 months. Everyone has been warm and friendly, generating a very positive and peaceful atmosphere. The genuine individualised care they give is appreciated. The staff have been aware of dad's particular needs in all aspects, including his “walking around” all night.
The food is prepared on the premises and personal dietary requirements are taken into account.
Staff training needs are well supported. Specialist dementia knowledge is vital to care for dad with dignity and respect.
The establishment of the permanent team now in place has been so successful as dad responds to regular known faces, but not to strangers so well.
I have always been very involved in dad's care plan development and feel have been an integral part in continuing to support dad along his dementia journey. I am always contacted with any health concerns immediately.
Regular visits to dad give us as a real understanding of the level support given by all staff.

My mother moved here having had a failed placement and been asked to move because of her complex needs. Since being at Bowerfield, all her needs have been assessed and a care plan put in place to address them. The staff treat her with respect and compassion empowering her to be her own person and make as many decisions for herself as she is able to. Her daily routine has been enhanced and she enjoys time with her carers.

The care home has improved as far as the building, decor and heating system etc recently along with new flooring this has been very good for residents and guests. The food has always been good. The major problem has been the loss of several excellent staff which had been at Bowerfield for a long time. We all know how difficult it is to find good carers. I'm sure the manageress will find them eventually. A couple of months ago I sat with my mother for an hour and one agency employee played with his phone and sat on a chair for the whole time.

Bowerfield is improving. The manager is working very hard to bring it back to the standard it used to be. The laundry room is excellent now. Always clean clothes ready to dress residents every day.

Bowerfield House Nursing Home has been through many ups and downs over the last 12 months. During the past week and since the departure of the deputy manager, the home has been a hive of industry with the home being thoroughly cleaned and the laundry almost back to normal. The manager of two homes is clearly determined to improve conditions and there is evidence to this effect.

After a very poor period from the end of 2015 to mid-2016 the home has improved with the appointment of a new manager and assistant manager. There is a more settled workforce although some team building is essential if management is to get the support of all the nurses, carers and domestic staff. Some improvements are still needed to areas such as cleanliness, laundry and standard of meals but progress is being made. Some capital spending is required on bathrooms etc.

The home has deteriorated considerably within the last few months. It has been without a permanent manager for some considerable time (a new one is now in place) but each temporary peripatetic manager seems to have to leave her mark in some way ie. a considerable amount of money must have been spent in re-decorating the main corridors within a short space of time, whereas the cleanliness of the home ie. the carpet in the main lounge needs cleaning/replacing and in my relatives room is unclean and basic needs are not being met.
Although there are many new carers they have been using agency nurses and my relative will not take her medication from an "unknown face" and consequently, I am finding tablets on the floor of her room and in her handbag. All of which have been reported to the nursing staff. The laundry service is appalling.
