Review of

The Hawthorns

from Shelley H (Daughter of Resident) published on 20 February 2026
Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My father had been a resident of Hawthorns for almost 10 years before his recent passing.
It's a very painful process putting your loved one's into a care home setting and naturally you want the very best for them. Sometimes the all singing and all dancing settings do not always show the empathy, care
and compassion that the staff give 100% daily. Hawthorns is this care home that gives, hourly, daily , yearly and so on.
If I could give Hawthorns a gold award for their care of my father over these years I would do so one hundred times over.
My heart grieves not only for my lovely dad but also for not seeing the staff who have been like family to me. I have always received empathy, countless cups of teas and many hugs.
Thank you Hawthorns for holding my Dads hand every single day.

I like Deepdende tremendously. I consider myself very fortunate to be a short-term resident here. It has been a most informative experience. The staff here are a joy, so helpful, and obliging in all kinds of ways, so as a resident you just relax and know that they have your best interests at heart.
For me this care home will form a standard by which I shall rate others.

Chartwell Manor has done a phenomenal job of taking care of not only my only my grandmother, but the wider family members. From the moment we stepped into Chartwell Manor, the warm friendly staff have guided and supported us through the journey from hospital stay to admission and beyond.
My grandmother
is well cared for, engaged and has improved in both health and well being since moving in. The residence is warm, well maintained and purpose built for the needs of the people it serves. The meals are excellent, offer a varied choice and staff are on hand to take care of dietary needs as they change. The rooms are well appointed and kept spotlessly clean.
The residents are kept stimulated by a wide variety of activities, games, meals all season and holiday appropriate. Visiting is as much for my mother as it is for my 7 year old. I enjoy my visits very much and can see the benefits to my grandmother. Thank you Chartwell Manor!
Reply from Hazel Greenway, Home Manager at Chartwell ManorThank you so much for your lovely review of Chartwell Manor. It will mean a great deal to the colleagues who work there, as they take immense pride in providing the very best care. It has been a pleasure to welcome your grandma and your family into the home.

My husband arrived here Tuesday 20th January. I am so happy that my husband came here, and it's taken the pressure off my daughter also. The staff are so lovely, very helpful, and friendly. Thank you.

Bessie feels cared for and treated with respect The food is not consistently cooked to high enough standard including the quality of the ingredients. Lack of variety of meal choices and overall menus changes. Vegetables always the same and toast is soggy with very little butter and poor quality bread.
Reply from Samantha Baxter-Hendren, Home Manager at Creggan Bahn CourtThank you so much for your feedback, we're delighted to hear your friend feels respected and well cared for. We're sorry her mealtime experience didn't meet our usual high standards. We regularly gather resident feedback to shape our seasonal menus, and our Hospitality Services Manager will speak with her directly about her vegetable choices and bread preferences. We want to provide the best possible mealtime experience, so we're always happy to talk through individual preferences to make sure residents enjoy their meals.

From the moment I walk through the entrance to the building, I'm greeted by the friendly, helpful and well presented receptionist. I have visited a particular resident many and always feel she is in 'good hands' by the staff I have met and often charred to (asking questions) never feeling 'fobbed off'

Mum has been a resident at Alexandra Court for nearly two years. The care she has received in this time has been outstanding. The staff are very caring and treat mum with courtesy and compassion.
Mum recently had a short stay in hospital with pneumonia. When she came out, she was still recovering. The

Cedar Court Care Home

Dad moved into Cedar Court in Cranleigh in October 2024 until January 2026. During his time there he was able to out on trips, join in a wide variety of activities and local churches came into the home for services and this was important for my dad. As his daughter I was able to join him on occasions.
Nothing was too much trouble if I needed some information. Sometimes we had problems with dad's hearing aids as he couldn't fit them himself and not all staff seemed aware of how to fit a hearing aid and how to check the batteries; however staff worked to improve this. I would recommend naming all belongings as well as clothing and keeping a copy of what your family member may have with them.
Staff were amazing and I always felt like we were part of the Cedar court family. I can't thank the staff enough, especially at the end for being there for me . This was the right place for dad.
Reply from Jose Pinto, Home Manager at Cedar Court Care HomeThank you for taking the time to write this wonderful review. We're so glad your dad enjoyed the activities, trips, and church services during his time with us, and that you felt part of the Cedar Court family.
It was a privilege to care for your dad, and we're grateful you trusted us to be there for him and for you. He will always be remembered fondly at Cedar Court.

If I was allowed to give these lovely people ten stars, I would.
My husband spent the last seven months of his life in the home full of lovely, caring, kind staff, led by a lovely manager.
He and I were both throughly and lovingly supported right through and beyond the end.
The staff care way beyond
what you might expect.
They carry out their duties efficiently, but also care so much and so genuinely.
I will be for ever grateful that my husband gently left this world surrounded by love.
Delma, Amber Court staff, all of you, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I have already submitted ratings in the categories, but they don't all seem relevant at this time.

My mother had a rather serious accident and after 3 weeks in hospital was discharged to Chartwell Manor. On the day of arrival, delays in the discharge process meant we didn't arrive at Chartwell until late afternoon; the staff had all waited to meet mum even though their day had officially finished.
This caring approach has been evident in everything we have experienced with the staff and management at Chartwell Manor, it's been so comforting for both mum and us. Every member of the team have been so supportive, particularly at time when mum has been confused and tearful as a result of her dementia symptoms.
All the family visits are met with a smile from the reception staff and Hazel, Gemma and Tracy could not have managed mum's transition more effectively. We are so grateful for all their efforts and the time spent helping mom recover from her accident. Mum is in a kind, supportive and comfortable environment at Chartwell and we can't thank them all enough.
