The Review Score of 9.4 (maximum of 10) for Brunel House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 25 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Brunel House in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.564 for Brunel House is calculated as follows: ( (179 Excellents x 5) + (105 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 296 Ratings = 4.564

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

The 4.846 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brunel House is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 13 positive Reviews (65 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 11 Reviews ÷ 13 Target = 0.846

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Chosen for respite care. My husband has vascular dementia. First time away. Lovely feel about the place. All staff smiley and friendly. Took a couple of days to settle down but lots of info on him when I phoned up so felt very reassured. Hope he can return.

I moved my mother to Brunel House in April 2016 suffering from dementia and she continued to live there until her death in July 2017. Brunel House is a fantastic care home. The manager and all the staff really understand the meaning of the word "care", they do in abundance and nothing ever seems to be too much trouble. My mother spent 15 very happy months there and I would certainly recommend Brunel House as a very good choice for either full-time residential or temporary respite care. My mother-in-law is still a current resident.

We cannot speak too highly on any aspect of Brunel House. Every member of staff acted kindly, efficiently with great feeling to my wife during her respite time.

This is an update to my last review done in December 2016. The atmosphere at Brunel has really improved. My stepmother has gone from being depressed and wanting to stay in bed all day and being allowed to do so, to telling us how happy she now is. There is mutual affection between her and the staff and their ability to encourage her on down days to get up, dressed and joining in, is nothing short of remarkable. The lounge is full of residents when we visit and often there is an activity going on. Mum is able to have conversations and get to know other residents so much more easily as others are similarly encouraged to be up and socialising. There is more that can be improved, more access to outside area and better communication streams for relatives are still needed but I feel confident these issues are being addressed.

My mum is on the dementia floor. She absolutely loves it there and she had a real bond with a certain senior member of staff, this staff member cared for her as if my mum was her grandmother. They had a real connection. It's such a shame that this senior member of staff has now left the home. My mum really adored her, even though she called her a different name she always related to who she was with that name. At times my mum can be unsettled and mention going home quite a bit, I feel that all the staff handle this really well and they reassure her with everything.
I understand that the senior member of staff continues to come in on a regular basis to see my mum, I find it warming that she continues to do this even though she no longer works there. it just goes to show that she is a caring, lovely and kind person.

During our uncle's time at Brunel House, he received outstanding care and attention.
All the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming and whatever their role they treated him with great respect and kindness, making him feel a valued member of their community.
Sadly his poor health meant he was unable to fully enjoy all the wonderful variety of food on offer or participate in all the activities.
The last few weeks of his life were comfortable and peaceful thanks to the lovely staff who attended to all his needs with care and compassion.

Since my husband entered Brunel House I have nothing but praise for the staff on Mullard Wing caring for him (he has not always been compliant). The care and patience they show him is wonderful. I have already recommended two others to this house. Long may it continue.

Mum has lived at Brunel since Sept 2015. In that time she has been genuinely cared for and we have been very well supported. The staff and facilities are wonderful.

The staff are brilliant. They are caring and compassionate and treat everyone with dignity. They work to meet the changing needs of residents and are always finding ways to improve their care in a person-centred way. I feel very welcome when I visit staff are good at keeping me informed. The activities coordinator does a good job of offering a variety of activities.

The carers at the home are brilliant with all the residents. Last week some of the residents and six carers went in the mini bus to Weston-Super-Mare and returned with lots of photos of happy residents walking on the beach, eating ice cream, fish and chips etc! Most days I bring my husband home or go for a run in the care and there are never any problems about going back into the home.

My father died on 16 May, despite a critical illness, he refused to go to hospital as he was desperate to spend his last weeks at Brunel. The care home team did their utmost to ensure his well being. Constant checking, monitoring and giving emotional support went on both day and night. Members of the family were able to stay overnight whenever they wanted and they too were supported and kept informed. Nothing was too much trouble. At all times they were professional and caring to us all. We can not fault their support and perfectly understand why my father had insisted 'I want to stay in Brunel'.

Both my parents have just moved into Brunel House. My husband and I visited with no appointment, we were welcomed in and given a guided tour by a lady, who was extremely friendly and answered all our questions in great detail. We visited several times on the following days bringing other family members and my parents, and on each occasion we were greeted with the same friendly staff. They have now moved in and have nearly been there a month, the home is comfortable all staff cheerful and friendly. My parents are extremely happy in their surroundings!!

My mother was admitted in November 2015 for palliative care when transferred from hospital. She was in a very poor way and very frail. She left Brunel House on the 4th of May 2016 after being nursed back to full health. She is walking well and is almost totally independent thanks to the careful and considerate care received form Brunel staff. She is 96 years old!

I came to a residents meeting in Jan 2016. It was well attended, we were all encouraged to ask questions, all of which were answered. Since then nearly all of the issues have been dealt with. I have really been impressed with the staff and the kindness they show to relatives and most of all residents. It is never easy moving into a care home, and it's thanks to the staff that my mother has settled in so well. They always have time to talk to her, recently mum became quite ill and thanks to the Dr and staff she is getting better. Carry on the good work. Thank you.

For the period of one year three months, the time of my friends residence, I have found the staff helpful and understanding. Any problems I did experience were handled correctly by the nurse in charge of the ward and the manager. I can appreciate their difficulties in running a mixed ward, also as with my friend and her eating problem, dementia/alzheimers is not the only thing many patients suffer from!

My relative has been in Brunel House approx 18 months. They are frail but do not have dementia/Alzheimer's. The staff at this residence have always been good/caring however since a new manager took over, patient and relative comments are being taken on board and acted on. Staff have now been granted to give consistence both to residents, relatives but also for each other. The atmosphere is calmer, confident and the service far more efficient. Standards of cleanliness have improved in some ways though main meals continue to lack imagination/flavour. It seems there is much better support from management and a feeling of progress and confidence.

My wife has been here a week. We find the standard of caring has greatly improved since February 2015. The food is adequate, let down by poor evening meals though, many elderly people do not require much to eat in the evening we realise that but the staff could make more effort in preparing evening snacks/meals. Soups are below the standard of the hospital.

Terry Allen, Marketing at Brunel House responded to this review on 26 Mar 2016:

This reviewer has added a negative comment about the food at Brunel House, however the score given for the food was Good.

The staff at Brunel House are extremely caring. There is always a smiling face and a joke. They treat the "guests" with respect and genuine kindness. They try to be flexible with individual guests needs and wishes. I don't think any "care" home can be perfect but Brunel House does strive to improve and listen to relatives concerns.

Overall I feel my mother is treated well, with dignity and respect and kindness. Her basic needs are met, she is fit and well physically although due to her condition she struggles mentally. the staff are always friendly and helpful to both her and myself, acting with great patience and understanding at times. The activities are well run although I do not always feel my mother makes full use of what is on offer she perhaps needs some more encouragement to take part? But, I am very happy with her care and treatment at Brunel House.

My husband, who died on 29th December has been a resident at Brunel House for 2 years. He first stayed there on respite care basis, while I had a hip replacement In March 2014. Because of my age and the limitations of my treatment, the family and I decided to make him a permanent resident. He did fret for a bit at first, but I (at 87) could not give him the necessary attention. He accepted the situation and has been very comfortable there, well liked by all staff, whether carers or administrators. I have no regrets about his treatment - the staff are friendly (to residents and to relatives) and very welcoming - he has always been kept clean and comfortable.
