A fabulous home for care. My mum went in very poorly, she needed respite care. She was treated with dignity, respect and the utmost kindness.
The rooms are lovely, the food is of top quality and very nutritious.

A most excellent careing home with good management and competent staff. My knowlede of care homes is small. But Brunel House appears to me to be of a high standard a residence suitable to your close relative/friend.

My husband has stayed at Brunel House for respite care since January 2018 at least. He has stayed on several occasions and enjoyed every minute he has spent there. The whole place is always spotless, and the food smells mouthwatering if you arrive at mealtimes. The manager is wonderful. She is always
available to talk to visitors, staff and residents and her leadership is continued through to her staff who are all lovely with residents.

My brother was a resident at Brunel House in Box until his recent death. He was not only cared for but loved by all the staff. If care homes were rated 0-6, Brunel would score a ten. In summary, if I ever need a care home I would queue up to be admitted to Brunel. The English language lacks the terminology
to extol the credit Brunel deserves.

Dad was in for respite care. No evidence of any showers, I had to shave him myself before taking him out for coffee. Had to request three times for his bed to be made after lunch time. Wasn’t given any pain relief because the paracetamol was bought over the counter. Had to remind the staff for chair
raisers three times. Dirty clothing hung back up in his wardrobe (not by dad as he would have left it on the side). Staff have not got enough knowledge or understanding of dementia. A gentleman asked for the toilet in the quiet lounge area and was left to wait by a team leader until he had an ‘accident’ in his trousers. The manager was apologetic but not seen on the floor at any time we visited. Very disappointing and added stress at a very difficult time for my family. Sadly could not recommend Brunel House for ‘care’.

I visit my Mum about 4 times a week. She always looks clean and cared for, the management and staff, as always, pleasant and do a really great job. When I leave the home I have no worries that my Mother is well cared for and safe. It's a nice feeling.

The care mum receives is excellent. The staff team has, in the main, been there many years and know her very well. The activities are many and varied. They try very hard to ensure she will join in as much as possible.

Today I visited the home for the first time. I stayed for lunch, it was very welcoming. Every member of staff has a very caring attitude. The rooms were exceptionally clean and residents were very well attended to. The home has a very happy atmosphere.

Happy with my care. The food is very good with lots of variety. My room is comfortable and nicely decorated.The staff work hard and are always happy to chat and assist me. I haven't attended many activities but intend to do so this new year.

We arrived unexpectedly at 11:30 am and were very warmly welcomed and invited to stay for lunch! This was our first visit and we have certainly been made to feel welcome.

I moved my mother to Brunel House in April 2016 suffering from dementia and she continued to live there until her death in July 2017. Brunel House is a fantastic care home. The manager and all the staff really understand the meaning of the word "care", they do in abundance and nothing ever seems to
be too much trouble. My mother spent 15 very happy months there and I would certainly recommend Brunel House as a very good choice for either full-time residential or temporary respite care. My mother-in-law is still a current resident.

This is an update to my last review done in December 2016. The atmosphere at Brunel has really improved. My stepmother has gone from being depressed and wanting to stay in bed all day and being allowed to do so, to telling us how happy she now is. There is mutual affection between her and the staff
and their ability to encourage her on down days to get up, dressed and joining in, is nothing short of remarkable. The lounge is full of residents when we visit and often there is an activity going on. Mum is able to have conversations and get to know other residents so much more easily as others are similarly encouraged to be up and socialising. There is more that can be improved, more access to outside area and better communication streams for relatives are still needed but I feel confident these issues are being addressed.

My mum is on the dementia floor. She absolutely loves it there and she had a real bond with a certain senior member of staff, this staff member cared for her as if my mum was her grandmother. They had a real connection. It's such a shame that this senior member of staff has now left the home. My mum
really adored her, even though she called her a different name she always related to who she was with that name. At times my mum can be unsettled and mention going home quite a bit, I feel that all the staff handle this really well and they reassure her with everything.
I understand that the senior member of staff continues to come in on a regular basis to see my mum, I find it warming that she continues to do this even though she no longer works there. it just goes to show that she is a caring, lovely and kind person.

During our uncle's time at Brunel House, he received outstanding care and attention.
All the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming and whatever their role they treated him with great respect and kindness, making him feel a valued member of their community.
Sadly his poor health meant he was
unable to fully enjoy all the wonderful variety of food on offer or participate in all the activities.
The last few weeks of his life were comfortable and peaceful thanks to the lovely staff who attended to all his needs with care and compassion.

Xyza

Xyza Macutay-Malloch BEM

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2025

Xyza (Sam) is the Home Manager at Brunel House. She joined MMCG in 2024 as a Senior Operations Manager and was offered the role in Brunel House in January.


She qualified as a nurse in the Phillipines and moved to the UK in 2009 to work in social care. In 2017 she was promoted to a Home Manager role at Kingsley House in Tetbury. She was honoured to awarded the British Empire Medal in 2021 for her service during the Covid pandemic.


When Sam is not at work, she is very active in the community as a Parish Councillor in Tetbury and is the Co-Founder and Director for 'Philipinos in Care' looking after pastoral needs and organising social events.

Lisa

Lisa Bendle

Job Title: Deputy Home Manager Joined: 2025

Lisa joined the Brunel House team in 2025 and has brought a wealth of experience with her. She has worked in the care industry for 35 years, most recently at Dorothy House Hospice.
She qualified as an RGN in Bristol and has worked in Southampton, Bath and was a District Nurse before joining Dorothy House.
In her spare time, she enjoys walking her dog and watching her son play football on the sidelines, even when the weather is blustery.

Milan

Milan Thebe

Job Title: Clinical Lead Joined: 2024

Milan has been at Brunel House since 2024 as a bank nurse and was promoted to Clinical Lead in 2025.


She qualified as a nurse in 2013 in Oxford, and practiced in Frimley Park Hospital where she achieved promotions to Junior Sister and Practice Development Nurse. She moved to Great Western Hospital in Swindon alongside being a bank nurse at Brunel House.


Outside of work, she spends time with her young children, trains for half marathons and enjoys travelling the globe.

Mel

Mel Applegate

Job Title: Administrator Joined: 2021

I love interacting with the residents at Brunel House as I carry out my administration duties. I provide support to the Home Manager, Deputy Manager, relatives and residents, as well as other departments within the home.


My biggest achievement whilst working here has been understanding the payroll admin because it was very difficult to get to grips with. It felt like learning a foreign language!
When I'm not at work, I like to spend time with family and friends; we go to the cinema or to the races.

I've worked at Brunel House since 2016. I enjoy working in Reception and meeting all the relatives (they actually become friends after a while).


I have met a lot of very interesting people and shared many ups and downs with them. I believe it's nice to see a friendly face when you walk into the home and try to give a happy vibe to visitors.


I also get the chance to make friends with a lot of the residents and help them in whatever way I can.
I work with a lot of very nice, caring people of all age groups- I like that, especially as I am one of the oldest members of staff!

Job Title: Dementia Ambassador Joined: 2013

Hi, my name is Stacy and I am the Dementia Ambassador at Brunel House. My role as an ambassador is to promote person-centred care of the highest standard. I have recently qualified as a trainer with the Alzheimer's Society, this will play a key role in raising awareness and understanding of dementia, and make a positive difference to our residents by empowering our team to develop good practice.


I have worked within the care sector for 19 years and have been at Brunel House since 2013. Whilst at Brunel House I trained as a Care Practitioner and have also worked as an Activities coordinator.


Delivering activities and social events remains a big part of who I am. To make someone smile or hear them laugh, to be the person who has brightened someone's day, to be the ears to listen and the arms that comfort, to redirect thoughts and feelings that may shadow them at times: this is the best feeling in the world.


I live locally with my husband and two daughters. Family is everything to me and we spend our spare time creating cherished memories.

Chelsea

Chelsea Marritt

Job Title: Care Practitioner Joined: 2016

Hi, I'm Chelsea and I am a Care Practitioner, I completed my training whilst working at Brunel House.

I have worked at Brunel House for 6 years, although I have worked in care for 12 years. The best bit about my role as a Care Practitioner is the clinical practice and admin management of the floor whilst still being able to participate fully with the residents.


The accomplishment I'm most proud of is the creation of the dementia floor which I view as an excellent model to achieve the best possible outcomes for maintaining the quality of life.


When off-duty I love online gaming and I read a lot of sci-fi books, The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings are among my favourites. I also like to explore the local Box hills and have been caving in the Boxwoods!
