Overall Experience
My sister was in Andrew Smith House with steadily declining mental and physical capacity for approximately 14 months.
She was kept as comfortable as possible, and whenever I phoned (as I live some distance away) the staff, usually Hazel or Bushra would always take the cordless phone to her, and had up to date information about her condition.

I was impressed the catering staff baked her a birthday cake too, and pureed some to feed to her. Thank you everyone.

What a lovely care home. The staff are really friendly and always do amazing activities with them. Always keep updating the rooms and keep everything looking fresh and clean. They go above and beyond to resolve a problem. The manager has made so many improvements and is always available when you need her! A family friend lives here and they look after him so well. Thank you so much.

My husband has been in three other nursing homes, plus two hospitals, since the COVID started and he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I have had no choice at all. The last home was terrible. This nursing home is really, really good. I have no problems at all with this nursing home. The staff are lovely and I feel my husband is happy.

One member of staff has been amazing with my dad, and I'm so impressed and grateful to him. After a few wobbles due to his Dementia and Aphasia, my dad has formed a secure attachment with him, and it has been so lovely to see.
He is caring and compassionate, knows how to speak to him, manage him effectively, knows when to give him space and has also taken him out countless times on walks.
The bond between them is fabulous.
My dad's well-being has improved as a result of this. I have seen the change in him, as have my mum and brother.
Another member of staff has also been amazing from the beginning, going above and beyond.
The communication from them is excellent.
The Wycoller ward has some fabulous members of staff who are a credit to this care home.
It is such a relief to know that he is in the hands of such competent, kind staff.

I would definitely recommend this care provider to others as a result.

I am very disappointed with this care home in Nelson. Two weeks ago we finally were able to see my Mum after such a long time. She was so happy to see her two daughters. She was diagnosed with Dementia however, she recognised her daughters and was very happy to see us. We were calling her every day on the phone we left for her. All of a sudden I rang the Manager to request my Mum's care Plan only to be told no and had the phone put down on me. Ever since, my sister, my mum's best friend, her grandson and myself have been calling to try and speak with my Mum daily and they keep saying no, you have to talk with a Manager. Every time we ask for the Manager she is always out. I have never come across something like this. How can you keep a family apart like this? I have no words to describe how we are feeling. My Mum must be wondering where we are and why we have not contacted her. I am also wondering what the care staff are saying to my mum when she asks about us.

My husband was well looked after in this care home all the staff were brilliant and he took to them all.
The food was really good and the room was clean and tidy
More importantly my husband was kept clean and tidy to the best of their ability

Because he had alzheimers he did not always allow them to help him to be washed and dressed.

My grandad spent just a short time in Andrew Smith House - what turned it to be the last couple of weeks of his life. The staff, without exception, treated him with care, compassion and respect. During his final days, they also showed us as a family much kindness. I am very grateful to all who kept Grandad comfortable in his final weeks and days.

Reply from June Sears-Jones, PR Manager at Stocks Hall Andrew Smith House

Thank you for your kind words. We are so deeply sorry to hear of your grandad's passing. We hope the fact that he was treated with care, compassion and respect during this time in his life, will bring you much comfort in the days ahead. Remembering you all at this difficult time.

I would like to say big thank you, to the manager of Andrew Smith House for being my guardian angel. It was so difficult to manage a nursing placement paid by the local authority for my mother. He explained one by one, every step and gave me time to make sure I am well informed and included with all decisions. The manager of this care home personally attended the meetings with me to talk through with social services. The picture of care homes in the modern news and in social media is never good when we are talking about the care sector. I'm pleased that it’s not always the case. My mother is at Andrew Smith House for nearly two weeks. In five years, I have never had a better night with peace of mind that she is safe and well looked after.

Our daughter was a resident in shared living. She has a very bad experience whilst in that form of care. She is now in Stocks Hall Andrew Smith House. She is much happier, gets on well with all the staff. The staff get on well with her. Whilst we believe the staff do their best we think there could be more done to give them more activities and expand their capabilities. Our daughter uses Makaton. We think management could bring in a Makaton expert to help the staff communicate, not only with our daughter but with the other residents.

My mother was a very different person when she entered Andrew Smith six years ago, to the person she was when she passed away January 2019. She was confused, vocal, distressed and sometimes could be violent but the staff helped her, looked after her, and cared for her like she was their own mother, in a way I couldn't. Then when her dementia moved on she became bedbound, couldn't speak and eventually couldn't eat or drink, in that time, a different set of staff cared for her but they were just as brilliant, so caring and understanding of her needs. I can't fault them or thank them enough.

Dad has been here two years and we are very happy with the care he has received. Staff seem to be interested in trying to improve the environment and level of stimulus. Given the high level of needs of the residents, the staff are amazing and keep a positive outlook. We certainly wouldn't want to move Dad anywhere else.

Care is hit and miss.

Promises made with reference to the level of care but instructions not passed on to the staff and serious errors made. Could be a good care home but it isn't at the moment.

Dad's care needs are very complicated and two previous care homes have failed to meet his needs resulting in his deterioration after only a few weeks and prolonged hospital admissions to re-stabilise his condition. At Andrew Smith House they immediately understood Dad's medical requirements and needs and his health and wellbeing showed immediate improvement. For the first time since his stroke 12 months previously he was given a shower and sat out in a chair with the company of other residents, very important for both Dad and us as his family.

Finally, we are able to relax knowing that Dad is in safe hands.

Both my mother and uncle are in Andrew Smith House. They are both well cared for, all their needs are met. I find the outings my uncle goes on are great to keep him entertained.

On a personal note, I would like to express how grateful I am for all the support the staff and management have given me. This has been from advice to passing me tissues when I was having a little cry. Fabulous place!

Having only joined the Stocks Hall family in 2018, Diane has made monumental changes to her Home, Andrew Smith House, and is a much loved and valued part of the team. She started her working career as a chef, and she passed the baton to her husband Lee who is head chef of the home, After starting her family, Diane yearned for change.
