Having my mum placed in a care home was a very traumatic experience especially as it was during the Covid lockdown. She had complex needs and with not being able to see her left me feeling at a loss but the reassurance that I needed from the staff helped me through the tough times. When eventually I
was allowed visits it was still hard for me to accept the difficulties Mum was having with her mental and physical health, the staff kept us informed at all times on her progress although it was always hard to see someone you love, it was good to know she was safe with knowledgeable staff to take care of her, of which we will always be grateful.

My Aunt spent her last 15 months of life at Sandy Banks having been in their care from May 2022 to August 2023 when she died at the home. I always felt that the whole team at Sandy Banks cared for my Aunt with dignity, respect and love as well as providing her with excellent and exceptional care, from
the time she arrived at the home to her well-managed end-of-life care.
As a registered general nurse/senior NHS manager who has commissioned care from care homes around the UK, I know how difficult it is to find a care home for a loved one that is able to consistently deliver and sustain good care with a dedicated team, but Sandy Banks did just that. I believe we found the right home for my Aunt to live her last months of life and her end-of-life care and attention to detail by the care team was excellent. Thank you to all the staff and the management team at Sandy Banks for your love and care delivery to our wonderful Aunt.

Thank you to all the wonderful staff who looked after my dad while he was at Sandy Banks Care Home.
From the first day, he was made to feel so very welcome and safe, and during his stay was always treated with kindness, patience, dignity and respect.
The empathy and understanding shown to my dad
and the kind, professional support given to me were valued and appreciated so much.
Best wishes to all the staff and residents.

Our mum has been a resident at Sandy Banks for seven months. We are really pleased with the level of care that she receives. The carers and nurses are, in my opinion, of a high standard. Management has encouraged a two-way dialogue with us to ensure that our mum's needs are met and that we all agree
with her overall care plan.

On behalf of the family, I would just like to say a very big heartfelt thank you to all the staff that looked after Mum whilst she was in your care. Also, to the staff that took time out from their busy day to stand outside and say a final goodbye to Mum on the day of her funeral and the staff that
attended the funeral service; it is something that will stay with her family for always, so once again, a very big heartfelt thank you one and all.

I would like to thank all the staff for the loving care they consistently give to my mum. She moved into Sandy Banks Care Home 15-months ago; she had a lovely, friendly welcome and settled in immediately despite us not being able to visit initially due to lockdown. It is her birthday today, and when
we visited this afternoon, we observed all members of staff making her day extra special. Many telling us about her morning. I would like to say a special thank you to the cook who made her the most beautiful birthday cake - so much care had been put into making it. Staff came and sang Happy Birthday and genuinely wanted to give my mum a lovely birthday. Thank you so much.

Mum was moved to Sandy Banks in March 2021, and from day one, we saw how the home operated in a caring and loving way. Mum was greeted as we were getting her out of the car and welcomed to her new home by the manager, the activities coordinator and by other staff. Whenever we visit her, initially on
Zoom and then in the Visitor's Pod, we can see that Mum is so relaxed, happy and content. We can see, first-hand, how all of the staff genuinely care for the residents and work together, led by their amazing manager. All of the staff go out of their way to ensure that we get to see our mum as often as is possible, given that Covid is still around. Three particular members of staff are the main ones that have been involved in coordinating our visits, and I can't thank them enough. All of the staff are so understanding; I can't remember all of their names, but there are two others that I have dealt with, and they are always so helpful and reassuring. Thank you, all of you.

Sandy Banks has become a safe haven for Mum 95. Arriving Oct 2020, she was bed-ridden and not wanting to eat or drink. She has improved steadily under the loving care given to her by kind and patient staff. The manager leads a dedicated team of nurses and carers who work together and have transformed
Mums life. Now when we visit her in the Safe Room or on Zoom, we see how relaxed she has become. She enjoys access to the lounges, enjoys musical activities and is eating and drinking much better. Communication with the home is excellent. Whoever answers the phone, we feel welcomed and given good information. Liaison with a new doctor and pharmacist was set up quickly giving us confidence that Mum’s medication and nursing needs were being carefully managed. After 8 years since her dementia diagnosis, we are aware there are good and less good days for her but are now confident that Mum is happy in her new home and being loved and cared for professionally. Grateful thanks to all at Sandy Banks.

A huge thank you to all the staff and management for their caring support in very difficult times. My mother was moved here in March due to her increased nursing needs and deteriorating health problems. The move occurred just before lockdown restrictions prevented family visits and sadly apart from
my initial visit, contact with mum has only been possible through an open window. The staff have become mum's adopted family and their kindness and support have been very reassuring. Mum's health and wellbeing has greatly improved since her arrival and this reflects the efforts made by all the staff.

We moved Mum into the care home just before lockdown in March, because she needed extra care because of her Dementia. Even though we have not been able to go into the home to be close to Mum she has come on in leaps and bounds. She is now eating and drinking which she had stopped doing before going
there. She is also a lot more mobile. The staff have worked wonders with her, her family who visit for chats through the window are so pleased that she has settled well and we are sure that is all down to the excellent staff who are working so hard to keep not only Mum safe, but all the other residents too. So a heartfelt thank you to one and all for the hard work that you do and still manage to smile through this tough time.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.839)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.839) out of 10 for Sandy Banks Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.864 for Sandy Banks Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (193 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 220 Ratings = 4.864
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Sandy Banks Care Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 39 registered maximum number of service users is 7.8, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
