St Mary’s Nursing Home was Established in 1987 and over the years has developed a reputation for high quality nursing and residential care. The home welcomes residents for a short stay for convalescent respite, just as warmly as it does those who wish to make this their permanent home. St. Mary’s Nursing Home is located in a residential area of Doncaster.

The building has a superb location enjoying a commanding south view over the Town Fields, and approximately half a mile from the Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Doncaster Town Centre. St Mary’s is a no smoking building, but a smoking area is available within the grounds. Situated in its own grounds, the home offers nursing and residential care. The Nursing Home has 56 single bedrooms and private gardens.

All religious denominations are represented, and should a service user require spiritual counselling, this would be arranged. There is a car park that can be accessed via St Mary’s Road behind the building for visitors and staff to use. All your needs will be catered for and the team's lengthy experience will provide the security of knowing you are in the best possible environment. Accommodation is over 2 separate floors for both male and female residents.

St. Mary’s Nursing Home provides regulated activity defined as Accommodation for persons who require Nursing/Personal care and Accommodation for persons who require treatment of disease, disorder or injury. Over 70% of their carers have an NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care.

My cousin came to St. Mary's after being taken to D.R.I in Nov. 2022 and diagnosed with Dementia and 3 months after that had a serious stroke which paralysed her on her left side. She has remained in St. Mary's since then. At that time the CQC assessments were disappointing at "Requires improvement"
all over. But, despite that we felt she was being well cared for , although she seemed to be isolated in her own room for long hours.
This year after a change in management we noticed a progressive improvement in the running of the home. There is a change of atmosphere about the home and staff are friendly, helpful and very caring towards residents. Sabrina has initiated many changes that all the staff are cheerfully implementing. For us, when visiting our 93 year old relative it is a pleasure to see her sat in her special chair in the lounge watching television and interacting with staff and residents in her limited way.
We look forward to the home's further development. Thank you Sabrina

I am very happy with how they look after my husband. As he cannot get out of bed, they are always there to change him when they have to. He has only been in two weeks, I am very pleased how they treat him. Only complaint I have is teatime meals, he cannot eat sandwiches but they always try to give him
them. There is one carer who really looks after him, nothing is too much.

I am the daughter of a resident who is in the care of the nursing side of St Mary's. All the staff, ie nursing and administration are very kind, caring and attentive. My father was admitted during the "Covid situation", and this has been dealt with very efficiently. They have been very helpful regarding
booking our appointments for visits. In fact, they "bent over backwards" to suit our needs. They have been very attentive to our father's needs.

St Mary’s looked after my husband in his last few days, so grateful for the nursing care he received, and for you, for accepting him so he could finally get his medications when he needed them and not after a 1/2-hour wait when on palliative care at home. Sad he had to be away from me in his final days,
but won’t forget how you cared for him.

Staff encountered friendly enough, with a couple of exceptions. Staff member handling video calling during lockdown was good, some staff involved with dad not so.
Various issues with this establishment including:
Incorrect administering of medicines as prescribed initially for a person with swallowing
difficulties and on a level 4 puréed diet.
No call for help facility ever seen in the bedroom, bed often unmade and didn’t have required bumpers on until just before moving.
Bedroom size inadequate for safe use of hoist equipment, insufficient room for own clothing to be stored.
Difficulty in phone been answered, unable to leave a message. Reception should be manned at all times.
Dressed in clothes not belonging to him, despite all his clothes been labelled.
Pod inadequate, no intercom and on two occasions saw forms completed by previous visitors still in the pod!
Attempted break-in some time ago, the window still boarded up on the last visit.
Not enough room to list all that needs improving.

The carers are wonderful, but much more could be done for the residents. I feel, pre-Covid, it would have been nice for Mum to be taken out sometimes - shops, cafe, etc. It's like she's in prison. It took us forever to get a suitable wheelchair so she could sit in the garden with us! Otherwise, she
is being adequately looked after, with some staff working above and beyond.

My husband has been in St Mary's care home for over three years now and has been absolutely so well looked after and cared for. All the staff have been absolutely amazing with him. My family and I appreciate everything that they have all done for him the whole time that he has been with them. We cannot
thank them enough for all the love and kindness that they have all given to him. They have all definitely been very kind and good with us all too. They all deserve a big thank you.

Very disappointing. Two particular members of staff were very polite and helpful, other staff not so. When I asked if Dad is eating ok, the response was 'one step up from a pig'! Another staff member told me Dad was shouted at. On discharge, items belonging to Dad were missing, and numerous items not
belonging to him were sent to his case. Dad has early dementia, he was extremely unhappy here! I tried to give the benefit of the doubt.

I am sorry to say that this care home has gone downhill since it changed managers. They make it so hard to see your relatives. I know it is hard for them but all the more reason to let the residents see their family. They have a pod that has a double glazed window which means the resident cannot hear
you! They never answer the phone so you can book in to visit. Some of the staff can be very short with you as well. Someone said we could ring up and speak to Mum over the phone but suddenly she is always asleep. When you do book a visit, my mum is still in bed which means I have to wait around while they get her up. She is not in her chair so she can see me, the carers just say that they never knew I was coming. Mum's pictures have been taken down and I have asked for them to be put back up several times but they haven't yet. I managed to go last week, did all the paperwork, temp check and Mum was asleep in bed. Why did they do all that for nothing? Some carers are nice and help me though.

Staff are incredible at making my mum feel relaxed as she can find it difficult to settle in a new environment. When she first came in here a year ago, she settled straight away. Staff are always attentive and make sure I am always kept up to date.

Can I just express our thanks and gratitude to the wonderful staff and management for the recent care of our Aunt whilst in respite care at this home!
She was well looked after, in lovely surroundings, with fantastic, helpful, friendly staff. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble, with lovely meals,
great company from other residents, and daily activities to keep her stimulated. The home is beautifully furnished throughout. The staff and management coped superbly throughout our Aunts stay, always keeping firmly to the Governments Guidelines regarding the virus. Thank you again for your care whilst auntie was there. I can highly recommend St Mary's to my friends and relatives.

Absolutely disgusting! is the only way I could describe this so-called “care home”. My grandad was transferred there due to him having to leave the hospital due to the Coronavirus outburst. He needed to be helped with eating, as we did explain to them over the phone. My family had been going down to
see him through a window because of covid, we witnessed him being left with food on the table with no help, or they would only give him a few mouth fulls and then leave him once again! My grandad also weighed 12 and a half stone in hospital and in the space of 6 weeks of him moving to St Mary’s care home he had come down to weighing 10 and a half stone! One of the staff members spoke to both myself and my mum and questioned us on why we had chosen that room as it was always cold and dark, which is awful to listen to especially coming from a member of staff that works there. I could go on for days on why you should not put a loved one in this care home.

This is a first visit for my husband for a short respite stay. He enjoyed the experience and said how friendly everyone was. He said it was comfortable and would be happy to go there again. From a relative's point of view all staff were very welcoming, friendly and paid attention to detail. The home
was obviously making improvements to the building but this did not appear to be disruptive to the residents. The home was clean, warm and smelled of home-cooked food. I have made a further booking and am happy to leave my husband in their care.

The care given to my grandmother was amazing and they treated her with dignity and respect. She was washed thoroughly every morning and changed into clean clothing. They were kind and caring to her consistently. My grandmother loved all the staff and she felt as though they were part of the family.
At the time she was able to be hoisted out of bed, she was regularly encouraged to go into her chair and outside. They arranged for the hairdresser to come to her weekly and her nails were done all the time. Some days, when needed, the staff assisted my grandmother with feeding her but the majority of the time she did that herself. They always put a smile on her face.

Current Review Score: 7.9 (7.930)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.9 (7.930) out of 10 for St Mary's is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.5 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.412 for St Mary's is calculated as follows: ( (18 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 34 Ratings = 4.412
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.518 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Mary's is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 56 registered maximum number of service users is 11.2. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.2 = 0.268
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Sabrina Middlewood

Job Title: Manager

My name is Sabrina Middlewood. I am 45 years old and I have lived in Doncaster all of my life. I first began my working life in retail for 10 years. I married in 2001 and had my first daughter in 2001 after having my daughter, I worked at home on the phone. When my first daughter was 2 years old, I got a weekend retail job. I had my second daughter in 2007. After my maternity leave had ended, I went to Doncaster College and completed my Access to Nursing course. After this, I went to University to complete my nursing degree, which took three years. It was hard juggling my life with my marriage, children and my university degree without the support of my family; this would not have been possible. When I had completed my nursing degree, my first nursing post was in a care home. The care home I worked at had 20 nursing residents and 20 residential. After a while, I applied to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where I was given a position as a gastroenterology nurse. I worked there for five years. I really enjoyed my post there; it was challenging, busy, and an acute medical ward. I have also worked in other areas within the hospital, which has given me valuable experiences in other fields of practice. I have worked at Doncaster Royal Infirmary throughout my nursing career. I have worked in the Haemodialysis unit, Orthopaedics, cosmetic surgery and endoscopy. I am dedicated to giving the best care to any individual I am caring for, and I see all residents as my extended family. I am a very passionate person when it comes to any individuals who need help or support.

I work extremely hard, but I also like to have fun. I think it is imperative to enjoy your life at home and at work, and have a balanced home and work life.
