Our mum has been a resident at Westerlands for nearly two years. In this time there have been many changes and this review reflects the present situation.
Mum’s unit is clean, light and airy. Her en-suite room is equally clean, tidy and light. Mum’s Dementia can be difficult at times but all the carers
who look after her are attentive and professional yet personal and dedicated. They often go that ‘extra mile’ for our Mum and we can phone them or the management team at any time.
Mum has a soft diet and needs to be fed but she enjoys the meals and has plenty of snacks in between, with drinks ‘on demand’. The carers bathe and toilet Mum with respect and dignity and she always looks clean and presentable, another important aspect of maintaining her pride and dignity.
The carers know our Mum so well and show her genuine care and affection at all times. It is directly from this care that our Mum continues to thrive and we feel she is safe and extremely well looked after.

My wife has been at Westerlands Nursing Home for nearly two years. She has advanced dementia, she is basically wheelchair bound, unable to propel herself or walk unaided. The food is good and varied with 2-3 choices available at lunchtime or evening whichever it's main meal of the day. Bedrooms well
furnished and comfortable. Conservatory dining room looks out over large lawned garden. The manageress now in post for 8 months has worked very hard to sort out previous problems improving all the time, always there to listen and rectify.

I moved my mother to Westerlands as my mother-in-law was already a resident and I had seen how good the standard of care was.
When my mother arrived from her previous care home in South Wales, she was unable to speak, not walking, not eating or drinking. Her carers in South Wales were talking about
"end of life care". Everybody had given up on her.
She has now been at Westerlands just over 2 months.
She is now eating, drinking and feeding herself. She can talk (albeit confused due to her dementia), interact with others and read small amounts of text.
This is all down to the dedication of the staff at Westerlands and their dogged determination not to give up.
Numerous carers spent hours on a one- to- one basis with her encouraging her to remember basic tasks.
Last week she managed a few steps aided by the staff.
That says it all really.
I can't thank the staff enough for giving me this extra quality time with my mum when everybody else had given up.

My mother has been in Westerlands since August. I chose this facility because it had a welcoming atmosphere, the residents seemed well groomed and clean and the place seemed very clean and did not smell.
Initially I had some reservations about he organisation within the home and this was echoed in
the CQC report, however I have seen the staff make real efforts in recent months to put these administrative aspects right. The bottom line is that I have visited at random times throughout the past 6 months and I have never seen my mother treated with anything except the greatest respect. She is allowed independence where she can cope, but monitored quite closely. I have always found the staff very responsive to any queries I might have and they have been proactive several times in situations where my mother's health has dipped suddenly and they have shown great concern for her well-being.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.5 (7.536) out of 10 for Westerlands Care Village is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 1 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.1 out of 5 from 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.455 for Westerlands Care Village is calculated as follows: ( (5 Excellents x 5) + (6 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 11 Ratings = 4.455
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.081 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Westerlands Care Village is based on 1 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 = 3
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4. 1 Positive Reviews ÷ 12.4 = 0.081
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
