Craven Nursing Home became part of the Spellman Care family in 2004 and has since become a well-integrated part of the Skipton community. The home is situated in a quiet spot backing onto the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, offering residents a view over the water and the nearby moors. For the staff, the focus is on maintaining a friendly, unhurried atmosphere where residents feel comfortable and properly looked after in a setting that feels like a genuine home.

The daily routine at Craven is built around the individual, with 64 en-suite rooms that residents are encouraged to make their own. Shared lounges and dining areas provide space for socialising and building friendships, while the annual summer trip on an accessible canal boat remains a highlight for many. By using digital care planning, the team ensures that every resident’s personal preferences and health needs are recorded in real-time, allowing for a consistent and safe approach to care.

Spellman Care is a family-run group with deep roots in the local area, guided by a culture of kindness, dignity, and compassion. Since the first home was opened over three decades ago, the Spellman family has remained hands-on, ensuring that their core values are reflected in every home. They prioritise person-centred care, using modern technology to support their teams in delivering a service that is both safe and deeply personal to every resident.

My stepmother was diagnosed with dementia in summer 2021. Following my father's death that June, we needed to find a suitable care home for my stepmother. Craven provided a wonderful home for her final 2 and a half years. She was well looked after, and enjoyed all the many activities provided (music,
craft, flower arranging, mini bus trips) and also made friends. The nursing staff were brilliant, and her end-of-life care was provided with great dignity and support. The homes communication via weekly newsletters, regular face-to-face residents relatives meetings and monthly residents/relatives breakfasts was 1st class.

I cannot fault the care that Mum (who has many complex needs) received while in the Swan Ward. I could see her relaxing as she settled into her confidence in the care that she was getting. I spent many hours at Craven on most days in the early weeks, and I, too, soon became certain that our mother was
in good hands. Furthermore, everybody who looked after Mum achieved the remarkable feat of convincing me that they were doing their long hours of intimate care with a sense of personal commitment to their patient, my mother.
My experience is that Craven is a very good home, very well managed, and staffed by remarkable people.

When my mother was admitted to Craven Nursing Home we were informed by the discharging hospital that she had days or possibly 'a short number of weeks' of life expectancy. My mum was unable to get out of her bed and only had very minor movement in one arm and her neck/shoulder muscles. She was extremely
frail.
Mother has been cared for in a caring, extremely compassionate and understanding way. I am delighted that 8 weeks after discharge Mum is still with us, she has strengthened, engaged with us and takes pleasure in what goes on around her. All the staff have a lovely, friendly and still professional manner and attitude. She has made progress on most fronts. Her movement and conversation have improved significantly. The nursing staff had a very good understanding of her complex needs and requirements.

My father's last year was very hard and the decision for Dad to go into full-time nursing care was not lightly taken. However, the staff at Craven provided excellent care and attention throughout Dad's residence. Knowing Dad was in safe hands was a great comfort to us.

My husband had very challenging behaviour when he was first admitted to Craven Nursing Home. All the staff were very professional and cared for him in a very gentle caring manner and they always smiled in spite of his behaviour. They all continue to meet his needs with genuine care and tenderness. Their
calmness even when he needs three staff to help him has been exemplary. They look after me well too! Thank you.

I visited a friend in Heron Unit, what an uplifting experience. The staff were wonderful, attentive and caring. The room was welcoming with a lovely view up to the surrounding fields and hills. Great care was taken during personal care in the en-suite bathroom. Everywhere was spotless and although this
may seem a small thing in the grand scheme of things it did not have the odour that in my experience some care homes have. You deserve great praise.

I would like to all staff at Craven Nursing Home for the excellent way that they are caring for my dad who has complex needs due to his dementia.
He has been not been able to walk or stand since November 2022 and has to be hoisted and now moved using a wheelchair and they are marvellous with him.
He
is kept very clean and they are all very kind to him.

My dad has been looked after here since June 2022, the staff do an excellent job here. Everyone is very friendly and all do their best to help him even though little is known about his condition. They always contact me when he has falls which are part of his condition, which is often. My dad loves the
trips out which has started more recently, something he has always loved doing. Only have good things to say about the home and all the staff, pity there are not more of them to make it easier for everyone else.

We received a lovely welcome on a grim November day and were shown to Mum's room. We had booked two weeks respite care. It was indeed respite, living up to the name. Thank you to all the hard-working staff - carers, cleaners, nursing, laundry staff, activities organiser etc. Mum loved one-to-one and
singing. I loved being able to visit whenever I wanted. Craven Nursing Home almost became my home for two weeks. Thanks again!

My mother spent the last seven months of her life at Craven. She died recently of dementia. The loving care she received from the staff was amazing, well beyond what I'd have expected given her condition and associated behaviour and that includes all staff, managers, nurses, care staff and cleaners.
My father, also a resident at the Home, was supported and equally lovingly cared for, meeting his specific needs as he spent so much of the day with his wife and is now being very well looked after through a difficult time for him. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Craven Nursing Home cared for my father, who had Alzheimer's disease, for about eighteen months. We were always impressed by the dedication of the team in Heron and as the disease progressed they adapted to his needs appropriately, keeping him comfortable and safe as he became frailer. He developed
good relationships with many of the staff. They were very supportive to us as a family, especially in Dad's final few days and we will always be grateful to them.

Mum spent the last year of her life in the Craven Nursing Home, the care Mum received was beyond excellent, I can’t thank the nurses and carers enough for the love and considerate care they gave Mum in what was probably the most challenging times of their careers. During restrictions, my phone calls
were answered with friendly cheerfulness and always gave me the information about Mum that I needed.
When I could finally visit Mum in her room, from the moment I entered reception everyone greeted me with smiling cheerfulness and Mum was well cared for and happy.
In the final weeks of Mums life, the care Mum received was outstanding.
A huge thank you to the nurses and carers who sat with Mum in her final hours.
I have no hesitation in recommending the Craven and its wonderful staff.
Thank you all.

I can’t recommend Craven Nursing Home highly enough. They provided wonderful support to my mother and my family at a very difficult time for us. At very short notice, they took on the care of my mother who, at 86, had suffered a decline in her abilities. They cared for her in a wonderfully supportive
way. Both the nursing and the care staff were so lovely, nothing was too much trouble for them. The meals were wonderful too. I was impressed with the cleanliness and the decor of the home. The home has a fresh and modern feel to it, the garden was beautiful too with flowers and a lovely seating area. Thank you for all your support. It was so good at such a difficult time.

I do not hesitate recommending Craven Nursing Home to anyone seeking care for either themselves or a loved one. From our initial telephone contact with Craven and viewing the facilities, we did not consider another home. The staff were so friendly and welcoming towards us that we knew Mum would be happy
there. Mum's room was airy, bright, comfortable and always clean. We were encouraged to put up family pictures and leave a list of Mum's likes/dislikes, family members and significant moments in her life so that they could get to know her well from the outset.
Throughout Mum's time at Craven staff were caring, courteous and unfailingly cheerful towards us and Mum. Importantly the telephone was answered promptly, if someone needed to call us back they did so and in a timely manner.
We were grateful to be able to visit Mum during this time of Covid testing, wearing PPE and masks. Reassuringly, the manager ensured that at all times we were compliant. We felt sure Mum was safe in their hands.

My mum who was 97, suffered from severe dementia. She was admitted to Craven Nursing Home in April 2019. Noone could have been kinder than the staff there. They were so patient with her, even when she was, to say the least, challenging. I could not have asked for her to be looked after any better. The
home is lovely, clean, bright and well decorated. Mum loved the food surprisingly, as she was very selective about her food. When the end came, she was so well looked after and so obviously loved. I couldn't have asked for more.

I rarely bother to do reviews on products and services. However, I will make an exception regarding Craven Nursing Home.
My mother needed nursing care at the end of her life, we read reviews and made visits before we chose Craven. It was the best decision we made, the quality of care and friendly
staff made my mother’s last months a delight. The entire team were simply brilliant and couldn’t do enough for my mother and the family.
I would recommend anyone faced with the same dilemma we had, to choose this nursing home it will give everyone involved total peace of mind and it’s the least you can do for your loved ones.

My husband recently spent seven weeks at Craven Nursing Home before he died at hospital. He was suffering from advanced cancer and needed 24-hour nursing care. He had a lovely room on the first floor at the back of the building with a view over the canal and hills, everywhere was spotlessly clean and
the necessary Covid regulations were followed.
My husband received excellent care from all the staff, myself and my daughters [aged 21 and 19] were given the comfort and support that we all needed at this sad time. It was such a positive experience for the whole family and I have absolutely no hesitation recommending this home.

My husband moved in here in February - thankfully there was a nice room available at the time. It had a toilet and washbasin en suite, something not available before. A friend had told me the care here was very good and she was absolutely right. From the outset, a thorough and sensitive assessment was
made of his needs and aids were put in place quickly. It was heartwarming to see the care and professionalism of staff making him welcome with friendly introductions, putting up pictures or booking video chats. The teamwork is sound and proactive, well managed and appreciated by those leading the way. The Underpinning Elements written in the Statement of Purpose are so good to hear - almost a hug in words. Relatives and friends of residents should be so encouraged by the determination to work for residents happiness and well being and these aims do feel enacted. My husband is already responding to the kindness surrounding him and the staff are reviving his sense of humour wonderfully.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.741)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.741) out of 10 for Craven Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.841 for Craven Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (160 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 189 Ratings = 4.841
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Craven Nursing Home is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 68 registered maximum number of service users is 13.6, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I always knew I wanted to be a nurse when I was a child, and from a young age, my passion allowed me to make this a reality.

Growing up in the East London Borough of Hackney, with strong family values and a proud, caring Mum, I always had a great desire to help and care for my community.

I started my career working in a Stroke Unit in London, progressing to become a Sister in a Trauma and Elective Orthopaedic Ward in Manchester.
