Craven Nursing Home became part of the Spellman Care family in 2004 and has since become a well-integrated part of the Skipton community. The home is situated in a quiet spot backing onto the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, offering residents a view over the water and the nearby moors. For the staff, the focus is on maintaining a friendly, unhurried atmosphere where residents feel comfortable and properly looked after in a setting that feels like a genuine home.

The daily routine at Craven is built around the individual, with 64 en-suite rooms that residents are encouraged to make their own. Shared lounges and dining areas provide space for socialising and building friendships, while the annual summer trip on an accessible canal boat remains a highlight for many. By using digital care planning, the team ensures that every resident’s personal preferences and health needs are recorded in real-time, allowing for a consistent and safe approach to care.

Spellman Care is a family-run group with deep roots in the local area, guided by a culture of kindness, dignity, and compassion. Since the first home was opened over three decades ago, the Spellman family has remained hands-on, ensuring that their core values are reflected in every home. They prioritise person-centred care, using modern technology to support their teams in delivering a service that is both safe and deeply personal to every resident.

I feel my sister has settled down at the nursing home, she has the company of other people residents and staff. She mentions another person who lives there who she has particularly bonded with. She does talk about where she lived before and going on little holidays but does not get upset about it now.
She probably doesn't realise all that is being done for her but is encouraged to be as independent as possible. She always mentions how clean everything is and how nice the staff are.
Reply from Christine Smith, Manager at Craven Nursing HomeThank you for taking the time to give us some really positive feedback. We have all become very fond of your sister and am glad she has settled in so well.

My aunt had to move into a care home because of a deterioration in her dementia at a difficult time due to the pandemic. As a family, this impacted us not being able to visit the home as they would facilitate in 'normal times'. The staff have been extremely supportive in helping her to settle and maintain
daily contact with her sisters by phone. They have done their utmost to facilitate visits when restrictions have allowed. My aunt tells us it is lovely and clean, the staff are nice and they have lovely cakes and yoghurts. She has become friendly with some of the other people who live there and whilst she would still wish to live at home we feel very reassured she is safe and content.
Reply from Christine Smith, Manager at Craven Nursing HomeThank you for your kind words, I shall pass your comments onto the staff, especially the chef regarding the cakes. I am so glad your aunt has settled in so well.

My dad has now been living in the home for 3 months. He settled quickly and talks positively about life there. He enjoys his meals and the view of the canal and hills from his room. The staff are so smiley and friendly with residents and their families and always willing to help with any issues. I know
he is being well cared for.
Reply from Christine Smith, Manager at Craven Nursing HomeThank you for your kind words, I am delighted that you feel your father has settled and is enjoying his life with us. I will pass your comments onto the staff, they will appreciate your comments and we will have even more smiley faces.

The staff have been fantastic. I had to move Mum quickly as she had become unsafe where she was, and the manager made the transition seamless. I have been so impressed with the friendliness of everyone and the care they have shown her. Have been able to see Mum inside for the first time since last April,
and visits are organised and well facilitated.
Reply from Christine Smith, Manager at Craven Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind words, we are so happy that your mother has settled in so well. I will pass on your comments to all the staff.

Mum entered Craven Nursing Home on 2nd November 2020, the week the second lockdown started, which was really bad timing. The staff have been great, keeping us informed about how she was settling in (slowly at first!) and facilitating Skype calls as we were unable to visit until the New Year. They are
always ready to discuss her care and issues and keep us well informed of developments. All this has helped us as a family tremendously: she had moved in very reluctantly.
When I first visited her this year (2021) I was surprised how much better she looked physically, which is a testament to the great care she's received. We can relax knowing that she's being monitored 24 hours a day.
There are less expensive care homes around, but you get what you pay for. I'm happy we made the right choice.
Reply from Christine Smith, Manager at Craven Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind comments, such lovely feedback is much appreciated. I am so glad your mother has settled in and now seems really comfortable.

My friend had to go into respite care for a few weeks and I found on my visit (full PPE and very safe visiting regime) all the staff are friendly and go the extra mile, she loved the friendly atmosphere and activities that were arranged. My friend has told me she wants to go back. So to me that says
it all.

Mum has been resident here for more than two years and the last four months has been during the coronavirus pandemic. During that time mum (and her family) have been attended by friendly, helpful and professional staff, the fact that the home has remained Covid-19 free throughout this dreadful time
is testimony to their care. All the residents are treated with respect and dignity but most importantly with care and kindness. The home itself is modern and kept immaculately clean and odour free, unlike some that we visited whilst looking for a place for mum. The manager is very approachable and has proved more than helpful with help and advice, as, I hasten to add, have all the staff without exception. We looked at a number of homes before selecting Craven and I can thoroughly recommend it for those needing full-time care. Thank you all.

I would highly recommend Craven Nursing home. The staff were excellent at caring for my mum, who sadly passed away this month, not only were they good with mum but they were very kind and understanding with me. The facilities are very good with plenty of activities, the rooms are very nice and well
kept, the food seemed very good and the lounges and social areas were nice. Everywhere was very clean and pleasant.

My wife recently had a short end of life stay at The Craven Nursing Home. She was treated with the utmost care, respect and tenderness from all the staff who are a credit to the manager.
The rooms are light and airy and being allowed to have your own possessions in your room is a big asset to the
residents there.
Once again a big thank you to all the staff who help all the residents there.

Mum was in Craven Nursing Home for the final 9 months of her life and we feel very grateful for the excellent care she received. On one occasion when I raised a particular need she had, it was addressed immediately. Activities staff work hard to involve all residents in activities and where possible
outings. The little touches, like fresh flowers and white tablecloths on the dining table, gave Mum a sense of dignity. As well as being friendly, professional and caring the staff also paid attention to Mum's individual needs, especially in the final weeks of her life when she received truly outstanding care. We felt like part of a large caring family and shared so many hugs and tears with many of the staff - cleaners as well as carers and nurses.

Very clean and well-equipped nursing home.
Meals are plentiful and varied.
The rooms are modern and really nice.
Views are by the canal at the back and gorgeous.
As for the staff, outstanding.
The nurses on duty are highly professional and know exactly what to do at all times.
The carers are handpicked
I imagine for their caring nature.
They looked after dad through his latter stages of dementia like he was family.
Palliative care was given with great dignity and lots of attention.
A true credit to nursing and caring.
I felt welcome always and part of the whole big family.
My gratitude will be eternal.
I never worried about dads care and thank god I could sleep at night, unlike a previous care home.

My mother has been resident in this care home for over two years and has, at all times, been treated with respect, empathy and good humour. Across the board, staff are not only kind and polite to residents but also to relations and friends, willing to spare the time to chat and discuss any concerns
we may have. As a family we couldn't be happier with The Craven Nursing Home and are thankful for the support it provides.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.741)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.741) out of 10 for Craven Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.841 for Craven Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (160 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 189 Ratings = 4.841
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Craven Nursing Home is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 68 registered maximum number of service users is 13.6, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

Hi, my name is Steph. I am the Registered Manager at Craven Nursing Home.

I have worked here for over 20 years, starting as a Care Assistant in 2002. I have been a Registered General Nurse for over 15 years. I was Clinical Lead on nights for a year before being promoted to Deputy Manager in January 2020, and subsequently Home Manager in June 2023.

My passion has always been Palliative/End of Life Care, being able to deliver Person-Centred Care, in a respectful and dignified way to our residents and giving support to our relatives.

I enjoy delivering the very best care to our residents with kindness, dignity, and compassion. We have very experienced and caring members of staff at Craven, and I am proud to be part of this fantastic team!

I always knew I wanted to be a nurse when I was a child, and from a young age, my passion allowed me to make this a reality.

Growing up in the East London Borough of Hackney, with strong family values and a proud, caring Mum, I always had a great desire to help and care for my community.

I started my career working in a Stroke Unit in London, progressing to become a Sister in a Trauma and Elective Orthopaedic Ward in Manchester. Here, I was promoted to Ward Manager, where I led a close-knit and effective team. I was proud to have championed many new initiatives, ultimately leading to us achieving and maintaining a Gold standard Ward Accreditation for several years running.

My husband and I decided to leave the rat race of the big city and move to the countryside, where we could bring up our three-year-old son on a farm in Lothersdale and pursue our hobbies of gardening, veg growing and walking.
