The new owners are investing extensively in the property and it would be good to see them investing to the same extent in the staff, their most important asset. Happy, supported, well-trained staff are key to the residents’ comfort and wellbeing.

The middle floor can be a lonely place in the evenings

with few staff around and I am told it can take time to respond to residents’ call alarms when, for example, they need to go to the bathroom.

There can be a lack of consistency regarding communication and delivering information. The staff, however, do care very much and do their best especially when they appear to be a little short on the ground.

Reply from Andrew Kerr, Director at Northlands Nursing HomeThank you for your review.

Parkside Care acquired Northlands in March 2017 and as you note we have started a major refurbishment program. Our investment in the fabric of the building will make the home fit for purpose and improve facilities for both residents and staff.

We have also undertaken a staff survey and have made some improvements to staffing levels and conditions for staff. We will continue our development program with guidance from staff meetings and resident forums.

Our new nurse call system can monitor the response times of staff and the management will be reviewing this closely.

Since present manager took up her post there has been a progressive and marked improvement in all aspects of care, decor, staff selection, social activities and fundraising to name but a few. The staff are mainly mature ladies with life experience which is so important when understanding the needs of
the elderly. They, in turn, are excellent role models for younger girls coming into the workplace, most of them were not just carers but personal friends of myself and my late aunt. The senior qualified staff are observant and vigilant, I mainly refer to the day staff, they follow up any concerns, explain any problems and have always kept me up to date regarding my aunt's welfare. Northlands Nursing Home has a friendly welcoming feeling, all residents rooms are personalised to their taste with photo's, ornaments, items of furniture etc from their own home. I feel it is important that having senior male carers is essential as it gives elderly residents a choice when dealing with certain aspects of care.
The social interaction with functions that celebrate not only residents birthdays, but really all events on the calendar e.g easter, summer fete's, Halloween etc keeping elderly residents in tune with things that they would have celebrated in their own homes at one time in their lives. Northlands is also animal-friendly both domesticated and wildlife interactions are important and precious especially the red squirrels and many birds that frequent the garden. Northlands social organiser plays an important part in this. My aunt especially enjoyed the painting, music and film sessions.
The team of cooks, handyman, and visits from the opticians, chiropodists and especially the hairdressers all work so hard for the benefit of the residents. It is important that those behind the scenes are not forgotten. I do feel that relatives should give more personal input and could help out when seeking entertainers for all the residents. Next year I hope it will be possible to invite a group of residents and carers to my home to have tea and see my garden and listen to some music. I have always tried to give support to Northlands when they have strived to give a special function for all residents. I welcome this opportunity of giving a small amount of my views. I can only say God Bless and thank you for caring for my aunt.

I have visited my friend since she arrived in Northlands. I have always been impressed with the very high standard of care given to her and other residents, by all staff. I have tried to record this in my comments at residents meetings, which have been minuted.

I have also seen numerous acts of kindness

by staff towards my friend and other residents. Finally, a lot of work has been done this year on the building and furnishings.

Current Review Score: 8.4 (8.412)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.4 (8.412) out of 10 for Northlands Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.9 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.524 for Northlands Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (24 Excellents x 5) + (16 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 42 Ratings = 4.524
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.888 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Northlands Nursing Home is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 39 registered maximum number of service users is 7.8. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 7.8 = 0.513
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
