My wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia and admitted to Leys Park Care Home in March 2022. This was a traumatic time for me so my two daughters had taken on the task of vetting the choice of care homes in Dunfermline. They only needed their first visit which was to Leys Park. As a family, we're all believers in people over buildings and the dedication and professionalism of all staff members they encountered was evidence of a caring environment that would be ideal for mum. We are not naive. The world was beginning to emerge from the darkness that was covid. Leys Park and all those working inside were on their knees but benefitting from a management team who obviously cared. It's an old building with old rooms but the building was warm and the ensuite rooms were clean and comfortable.

The rooms are now gradually being refurbished and staffing levels are being addressed. My wife has been given the opportunity to embrace her dementia. The programme of crafts, music, exercise, and outdoor activities are underpinned by great carers who are now our extended family. We have every faith in the quality of service and care at Leys Park.

We are delighted with how well our dad has settled here. He is so happy and relaxed. The staff have been kind, patient and understanding with him. They engage well with him and ensure his needs are met and we are grateful for this. We were so worried about putting him into a care home but our fears have been put to rest.

My brother was happy and well looked after in Leys Park Care Home. I visited him every two weeks and he always seemed comfortable and well fed. He was clean and well dressed.

Thank you so much for reviewing our service. We are so pleased that you were happy with the care and support received. It was an absolute pleasure to look after your brother and he is a huge loss to the community and our team here at Leys Park.

My uncle was moved 3 times. Every time I have visited I have had to change my uncle - the downstairs is horrible, rich and poor rooms - from tiny rooms to massive rooms with en suites for the rich. My uncle's dementia has got worse and I believe it’s the management's lack of ability to communicate and help her staff. The management only cares about receiving a better improvement status (the care home is under improvement status for food and hygiene). I am requesting my uncle moves. Do not use this home, it’s the worst in Fife.

Thank you for your review. We take the safety of our residents very seriously and as you are aware this prompted the need for two internal moves within the units, all of which were discussed after the initial safety steps were taken.

We are currently undertaking a massive project of refurbishment...

Absolutely appalling care my mother received as a dementia patient. Very rude staff. The day my mother passed away I had to search all over the home for a member of staff to let them know my mother had passed. Not clean at all, broken sink in her room was taped up with black tape. The standard of care very very poor, would never ever put another family member in there.

I had to take Mum out immediately due to serious concerns about care she was receiving after family spent two days with Mum when she took ill. Unfortunately Mum passed away at my home two weeks later. Hospital at home explained to us she had recently suffered some form of attack to her heart. Concerns were given to the owners of the care home, St Philips, and investigation took place. I have a letter from them with the results of their investigation which has confirmed a couple of nurses in the care home were not confident in using new system that was in place which held residents' medical details. As a result, those nurses would possibly not know everyone’s full medical needs. Letter also confirmed other details we had concerns with. Care commission recently done inspection, put change request in place for home and date for completion. None of these were met and date extended. Please check care commission reports. No apology given to family. Disgraceful.

My dad was in Ley's Park (dementia) for a few years and always received first-class care and attention. They always kept in contact and the carers and nurses were lovely. My dad was pretty difficult to deal with (very independent, and often aggressive) but the carers tapped into his character and developed a great relationship with him. I cannot express my thanks enough.

My husband has been in respite twice in the last 2 years, both times in Leys Park. The first time he was in for 2 weeks and at that time, the building needed a lot of work done on it. But that wasn't important to me. The main thing was the care of my husband. And for that, I simply cannot praise them enough. From carers to nurses, each was fantastic. Patient, attentive to each resident's needs and their family/friends. Always had time to answer my questions and made me feel welcome each time I visited. I have never met the manager but my social worker thinks a lot of her and that is good enough for me. The second time my husband was in, just 4 weeks ago, his Dementia had become much worse. He was rude and accused the carers of all sorts. But none of it was true and I can only admire how they all coped with him. It is the only home I will be happy to place my husband in when the time comes. As I know we will both be looked after. And so will our wee dog who loves them all. A really lovely nursing home.

Reply from Angela Parnell, Senior Home Manager at Leys Park Care Home

Thank you so much, Rosemary, we did meet briefly two years ago at the first assessment and I'm sorry I wasn't here when your husband was staying with us recently. I'm so pleased he enjoyed his time with us and that this helped with your own respite. If we can be of service in the future, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Kind regards, Angela

We were made aware my mum could no longer live at home and had to find a care home for Mum within a few days. We didn’t have any choice as we were in the middle of lockdown. I was very nervous as we knew nothing regarding Leys Park and she was admitted on a six week trial period. The staff were amazing with Mum and she settled very quickly. She has a great connection with most of the staff and I’m sure she will be quite demanding. After the six week period we didn’t even consider moving Mum as she is happy and has never requested to go home. The staff have a great connection with the residents and always go above and beyond, we could not thank them enough. Even when my dad passed away the support she got from staff reassured us all. I would highly recommend this care facility to family and friends.

The staff are doing a great job of looking after our mum. The staff have shown true care/commitment to their residents, especially during the last few months (Covid). Friendly atmosphere when you walk into Leys Park. Lots of activities arranged for residents as well as guest singers and musicians. It's an old building but updating and improvements are ongoing. What has been updated looks fabulous. Have had a couple of issues, however, these were dealt with appropriately by management. Well done and thank you, Leys Park.

The building is quite old but is being renovated. We have been very impressed by the staff and management who really seem to care about the residents. Things have been difficult recently with visits not being possible because of Covid-19 lockdown. We have been able to use phone calls and video calls, which has helped.

Overall, we are very happy with the care our parent receives. The building is dated, but renovation works are ongoing, and we have been kept updated on progress. We have had a few isolated complaints, but these have been dealt with swiftly and satisfactory.

It is a very good and caring home, the only downfall is it's a very old building and needs a lot of renovation, but that is getting done gradually. Everything seems fine and all the staff do their best to make my mum and myself very welcome.

My father lived with the staff at Leys Park for three-plus years, and they were absolutely fantastic - throughout his life with them and at the time of his passing. He was happy and his old sense of humour emerged under the love and fun-full care they gave him. And they were so caring towards and considerate of my mother and myself. I am so pleased we found Leys Park in our moment of need.

The home will be much better when the refurbishment is complete, although there already looks as if maintenance is required. The staff are lovely but seem overworked and not enough of them. Dad seems settled though and that's the main thing.
