Situated in the picturesque village of Alness in the Scottish Highlands, Redwoods is a purpose-built home, set within the walled garden of an impressive Victorian country estate. The home provides high-quality nursing care to elderly people, including those with dementia and associated conditions.
A complete care programme
Featuring well-appointed ensuite rooms, Redwoods utilises some of the latest technology to make residents as comfortable and safe as possible. This includes a progressive secure dementia unit which complements the existing nursing care facilities. As part of this, we encourage residents and their families to be involved at all stages of care planning and other aspects of care home life.
A social experience
Ensuring that residents can retain as much independence as possible is a priority at Redwoods and with four spacious lounge and dining areas and a dedicated activities/reminiscence room, those in our care are able to enjoy socialising and participating in many of their favourite hobbies and activities. These spaces are also pleasant spots for residents to enjoy high-quality nutritious meals produced by the highly skilled catering team.
Peaceful surroundings
The beautiful wooded surroundings make for a wonderful sense of tranquillity, and our secure gardens are extremely popular with residents wanting to sit and relax or perhaps indulge in a spot of gardening.
I have worked at Redwoods since 2014, starting in the Kitchen as an assistant while studying Psychology at The University of Highlands & Islands.
Once I Graduated with a degree in Psychology, I changed my role to work the night shift as a care assistant for 2 years, where I continued to work on my personal development, completing my SVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care.
I then moved onto dayshift where I applied for a Senior Care Worker position and was successful. I completed the 6-month course at Meallmore, and then the SVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care. While working for the next couple of years I continued to learn and completed a course in Diabetes Management as well as taking on more responsibility within my role.
I then decided I wanted to progress further, and was successful in my application for the Senior Care Practitioner post at Redwoods. During my time working in this role, I completed more Meallmore training which taught me both Clinical & Leadership and Management skills. I took on a Lead position within the home Continence care, Learning and Development of staff as well as other champion roles. This helped me continue to develop my skills and practice.
I then applied for the Deputy Manager position in 2023 where I was offered the role. This is the current role I have within Redwoods which has been fantastic in continuously improving my practice and skills. I am currently working on a Leadership and Management course within Meallmore, as well as the SVQ level 4 in Health and Social Care.
Person-centred working is at the heart of my practice. I have worked over the years to support other care home staff to adopt this ethos in their work. This means supporting every resident in our home, in a manner in which they wish to be cared for while encouraging and promoting independence at all times.
