Overall, satisfied with the care provided within the home. Good level of personal care and support to family.
Notable changes is staff over the past one to two years, potentially due to the pandemic and restrictions. Throughout this time staff kept families updated as best as was possible.

Since my mother-in-law moved into Craigieknowes Care Home a number of years ago, I have always found the staff helpful and supportive anytime that I visit. There has been a number of changes over the past 12 months which has all been for the greater good of the home, as the whole of the downstairs has
had a makeover which is excellent for the residents and the staff. The home also has a new manager and she has a great team working with her.

My aunt took up residence at Craigieknowes Care Home in April 2020. As next of kin I did not have any historical experience of care homes. I found the first three months of residence to be stressful due mainly to lack of information from the care home. I had to continually make frequent telephone calls
to get an update on my aunt's condition and welfare status. I put this lack of communication down to the Covid situation. However, I was made aware by the care home management that there was to be a change in care home staff personnel. I began to receive regular e-mail updates from Craigieknowes, keeping me informed of the changes. I was now being kept up to date two-three times per week regarding the staff changes and my aunt's condition during Covid.
In summary, Craigieknows had made a significant change in the way it does its business. I receive regular updates and personal phone calls regarding my aunt's condition, I find the staff very professional, informative and most important to me ‘caring’.

The staff are doing a great job in my experience. They are looking after my dad extremely well and they are always happy to receive phone calls and to keep us informed. This is especially true under the new management and is welcome given that the situation with Covid has meant visiting has been affected
so much by the rules.

My friend was requiring end of life care. This we were pleased to say, was done with care and sensitivity. The staff were enormously supportive and understanding.

My father has been a permanent resident since the beginning of October 2019 and our experience of this care home has been positive. The staff are very engaging with both residents and their families. The settling in period was difficult but the staff dealt with it very well. My father moved to an en-suite
room within a few days to accommodate his personal needs which helped greatly. His room is bright with adequate furnishings and a TV. Food is presented regularly and there is a nice atmosphere in the home. The manager is very welcoming and always available.

My mother has been at Craigieknowes for 2 and a half years. The reason I chose this home was based on the fact that most of the staff had been there for a number of years and I took this as a good sign. We have got to know them well as we visit 4 times a week. They do a challenging job but are always
caring and patient.

At the moment my main issue is the smell of urine that prevails in the area upstairs it hits you even before you open the door into the residents area, sometimes it is so strong it clings to your clothing after leaving the building.

Although there are two air ionisers one at each end of the corridors

they are not really doing the job sufficiently.
Also having carpets in this kind of environment really is not suitable, a hard wearing lino or rhino flooring would be far better as any leaks or spillages of any kind can be seen and cleared up sooner and more conductive to this environment plus health wise you would not have the smell of urine clinging to it as you do on a carpet.

Ideally the rooms would be better having their own en suites for privacy for the clients and one wall painted as a feature wall to make the rooms more pleasant to be in.

Reply from Sharon Mudie, Home Manager at Craigieknowes Care Home

Many thanks for taking the time to review Craigieknowes Care Home. We will take note of the comments made and review the cleaning schedule for this particular unit to ensure regular washing of carpets is carried out.

With regards to the lack of en suite facilities, Craigieknowes is a purpose built care home that was constructed in line with the legislation in place at the time. When it was constructed, en suite facilities were not a requirement and it is impossible to reverse engineer these facilities. All residents and families are made aware of the facilities available prior to admission. That being said, we are about to commence major refurbishment to the showering and bathing facilities at Craigieknowes.

The painting or wallpapering of a feature wall in a resident's room is something that we are happy to do - we will discuss with the resident concerned or a family member in choosing a colour or wallpaper.

Again, thank you for taking the time to review Craigieknowes. If you do wish to discuss anything further with me, please do not hesitate to get in contact. Best wishes, Sharon.

Current Review Score: 8.3 (8.264)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.3 (8.264) out of 10 for Craigieknowes Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.3 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.917 for Craigieknowes Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (22 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 24 Ratings = 4.917
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.347 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Craigieknowes Care Home is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 9 = 0.222
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
