Canal Vue, located in Ilkeston, opened in March 2014. A skilled team of professional care workers offer residential care for older people and those who require dementia care.

The facility has all en-suite rooms and modern care capabilities, with the additional benefit of a canal-side setting giving a tranquil environment and super views.

The home is spacious and open, with large bedrooms and good design features, making a lovely living environment for residents, plenty of activities and a pleasant site for staff too.

Mum is a long-term resident and the care received is exceptional. The staff are effective, efficient and professional though still make Mum feel part of an extended family. She enjoys the good food and the fantastic activities which are delivered in a manner where everyone feels valued and included.
Quality materials are provided. From providing hair care to nail painting, wearing clothing of Mum's choice and providing a safe and secure environment. Her bedroom has always been very clean and clothes returned from the laundry are correctly washed. Communication with relatives and supplying regular photos with Mum's consent has provided much needed conversation and lasting memories in this difficult time. Covid 19 rules are adhered to during any allowed visit.
Reply from Caroline Carraher, Care Manager at Canal Vue

Thank you very much for completing such a lovely review, it is great to know that we are doing a good job, especially during these difficult times. It is good for the staff to feel appreciated as they do work hard and really care, whether it is laundry, cooking, personal care, activities or communicating. We are very pleased your mum is content with us, is keeping engaged and likes her room.

My uncle is very happy with the care he is receiving in Canal Vue. Although we have not been able to visit him due to Covid we have been able to speak to him on Zoom. He prefers to spend time in his room rather than mixing with other residents and staff respect his wishes, but do encourage him to join
in any activities they think may be appropriate.
Reply from Caroline Carraher, Care Manager at Canal Vue

Thank you for reviewing us, I am so glad that your uncle is content with the home and his room and that you are able to communicate successfully with him. It is much more difficult in today's environment, but we do our best to engage with the residents in whatever way we can. It is lovely for the staff to be appreciated for their efforts, thank you again for taking the time.

I have no complaints whatsoever, the staff are kind, caring and helpful. My father has been in a couple of care homes before Canal Vue, his room overlooks the canal, staff talk to him as they walk past his room. He had been bedbound for approximately 5 years, and the staff have kept him entertained
under the most difficult and trying times. I can't thank the home and staff enough for everything they do for my father and also the help and advice they've given me.
Reply from Caroline Carraher, Care Manager at Canal Vue

It is a very difficult time at the moment and staff are working hard to maintain the levels of care, cleanliness and activities. We really appreciate receiving your thanks for the services delivered, it means a lot to us especially at this time.

Thank you for completing the review. It is a pleasure to have mum here with us, she loves chatting with our caring staff, always wanting to help, hence she has enjoyed helping in the kitchen, assisting with the baking and built a great friendship with one of our other lovely ladies.

The care home kept us up to date on my father's medication and well being. During the lockdown, they regularly phoned, took in supplies and brought home to the window to wave. The nurse was excellent and understood his needs, and when he developed a temperature after testing positive for covid-19, she
quickly got him into the hospital. Had she not done that, the family would have been denied a goodbye. Since his passing, they have been very supportive and helpful.

We are proud to have been able to offer care to your dad, have him as a part of our Canal Vue family. It has been a difficult time for us at the home with the pandemic and we appreciate you taking the time to give positive feedback. Thank you.

When Mum was first admitted here for respite I did think that it smelt of urine. After she was readmitted it got better and now my Mum has settled in. I do not like the thought of patients just being left with no activity/entertainment as she loves to sing and dance, so more of this would be better.
My thanks go to my Mum's original carers who are the backbone of the establishment.

My mum has been at this home for 2 and a half years. The home is fairly new, the staff are very caring and helpful and I feel my mum likes the attention she receives and is happy with the surroundings and likes the view from her room - overlooking the canal and bridge.

My parents had a difficult time settling in but gradually have accepted that they need care.
Since my mother moved onto the second-floor things seem to have improved even more.
The seem to join in some activities and certainly eat and drink better than when they were at home.
No issues apart from
communication from management and the constant change in home managers.

My father moved to Canal Vue in October 2016. From the first contact with the home, it came across as warm and friendly, clean and comfortable. We were made to feel very welcome and all needs for my dad were soon met. Medically, the nursing staff have been excellent and go out of their way to keep me
informed of dad's reviews, access to all areas of the home were explained to me so to make the day to day routine easily understood. Dad seems accepting of the professional care he is receiving. All staff are kind, friendly and willing to do as much as they can for dad and us as a family.

Poor management. Does not call back when she says she will. Caring staff on the floor but not enough of them. Answerphone messages in our experience are not answered. My father has deteriorated rapidly in late October/November yet it was my wife and I that had to ask for a review. Does not know the
resident.
Reply from Claire Edwards, Area Manager West, Eastgate Care. at Canal Vue

Having been aware of the poor communication from the previous manager with the family, we addressed this issue. Communication is much improved and particularly with the family concerned, sadly this gentleman has passed away and the family have brought flowers in for staff. We have a new Manager in place who is an excellent communicator and feel that we have addressed the situation and are sorry that the family experienced this situation at that time.

My Husband has been at Canal Vue since August 2014. Knowing the care he is receiving has been an enormous comfort, as I found it very difficult to accept he had to go into a nursing home.
The carers are excellent - caring, patient and kind to the residents and also the relatives. The cleaners and
laundry staff are also kind and friendly to the residents and relatives. The lounges are always welcoming and nicely decorated. The corridors are also cheerful and 'themed' towards the residents. There is always music in the lounges and the home is clean, warm and welcoming.

My wife went into Canal Vue for End of Days care as she had terminal secondary cancer. The staff who looked after her were brilliant, treating her with care and dignity right to the end. Thank you.

Perhaps some tea making facilities for visitors could be provided.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.001)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.001) out of 10 for Canal Vue is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.630 for Canal Vue is calculated as follows: ( (75 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 108 Ratings = 4.63
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.371 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Canal Vue is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 70 registered maximum number of service users is 14. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 14 = 0.571
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
