Sadly it is impossible to have a coherent and constructive discussion/review with my sister. She has very limited hearing and one gets responses which have little to do with the question. This is not surprising as she is in a home for people with dementia.
She has been in Smallbrook for some 18 months
now and has settled in as well as one would expect. I see no signs that she is not getting the care required in comfortable surroundings.

My Dad has been at Smallbrook for 8 months and is very happy. We viewed many care homes and Smallbrook stood out. The bedrooms are a lovely size. The building is spacious and modern. The staff are very caring and kind. We have resident family meetings with the managers to discuss the running of the
home and any suggestions are considered and taken on board.

My uncle has brain damage from a motorbike accident when he was a teenager. Social services placed him in a studio flat so that he had independent living, this became increasingly difficult, he was vulnerable and very lonely. Not now, he is washed every day, fed and warm with company, everything we
have wanted for him. So much pressure has been taken off the family because he is looked after.

Overall, we as a family, feel that the level of care is extremely good. We are reassured by the genuineness of the care for our mother. Carers have taken a real interest in getting to know her as a person and adapt their care accordingly. The care team are kind to her and compassionate and have taken
good care of us as close relatives too. The only constructive feedback is the access arrangements for visitors. Security is obviously a priority, however, we are often left outside waiting to be let in for long periods of time.
Reply from Loren Johns, Support Manager at Smallbrook Care Home

Dear Yvonne, thank you for your kind words and we also appreciate your feedback regarding visitor access. We will certainly take this on board in order to make improvements where possible while still ensuring the security of our residents. With thanks, Smallbrook Care Home

My Father, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, enjoyed a 7 day respite period in Smallbrook Care Home. I visited him every day and found he was completely settled and very happy. The staff treated my Father, and all of the residents, extremely well. The manager runs the home brilliantly. I highly
recommend this lovely care home.

We as a family were recommended Small Brook by a work colleague. My mother settled in very quickly mainly due to the lovely calm family atmosphere. The bedrooms are of a good standard and the lounge has plenty of activities daily. The residents can take part in cooking, painting, gentle exercise and
sing along with many entertainers that visit the home. Sadly my mother passed away after only five months in residence. The care and attention she received was excellent. All the staff are so caring from the chef making special foods to encourage eating, to the cleaners and laundry staff. The carers that looked after my mother in those final days gave us comfort with their kindness and genuine respectful care. We as a family thank each and every one of them and we will miss them all dearly.

Making the decision to move Mum into a care home was extremely difficult, especially with siblings living far and wide. We visited quite a few 'homes' in the Surrey area and Smallbrook Care Home was our favourite because it was conveniently located but more importantly the staff are wonderfully kind
and caring and the home has excellent facilities and newly decorated spacious rooms. One of the best things about Smallbrook is their Activities programme - a lot of time and effort is gone into planning and Mum has the option to enjoy just about anything from past-times entertainment, gentle exercise, hairdressing to external trips. The manager of Smallbrook, is wonderful although she is currently on maternity leave I understand returns in October. Our experience of Smallbrook has always been a positive one and I highly recommend if you are seeking care or respite.

My wife and I are very close friends with one of the Smallbrook's elderly make Alzheimer's sufferers. We have both been very pleased with the standard of accommodation and amazed at the degree of kindness to the residents shown by all of the staff to all of the residents. Their care also extends to
us as visitors. It has been a new rewarding experience to see such high standards of care, which extends through their duties to the residents to providing it with grace and good manner,

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.533)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.533) out of 10 for Smallbrook Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.633 for Smallbrook Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (83 Excellents x 5) + (30 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 120 Ratings = 4.633
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Smallbrook Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 41 registered maximum number of service users is 8.2, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
