It was an incredibly difficult to make a decision to move a much loved relative into a care home. Smallbrook from the moment of enquiry and during the 1st visit, made the decision so much easier. The welcome, the atmosphere and lovely ambiance of Smallbrook have not faltered since my mother-in-law went to live there in February 2020. As a family we can visit her anytime and find her looking happy, well presented and obviously well cared for. The cleanliness of her room and all the areas in the home are exemplary. Her clothes are beautifully laundered and put away. During COVID-19 lockdown we were unable to visit but received regular updates. Just recently we were able to socially distance visit in the garden for the first time in 12 weeks for 15 minutes. Being able to do this was so reassuring in these terrible times. My mother-in-law radiates the amazing care the staff have provided from the manger, the care workers and all the staff.

We moved our mother to Smallbrook due to the lack of resident entertainment/activities during the daytime at her previous care home. We believe Smallbrook do continue to provide good daytime activities. However, there remains room for improvement in this area. Generally, the restaurant offers a good selection of quality and nutritious food. The size and furniture content of the room is spacious and of a good standard for the monthly cost. Finally, a special mention goes to all the staff that provide a good service.

Sadly it is impossible to have a coherent and constructive discussion/review with my sister. She has very limited hearing and one gets responses which have little to do with the question. This is not surprising as she is in a home for people with dementia.

She has been in Smallbrook for some 18 months now and has settled in as well as one would expect. I see no signs that she is not getting the care required in comfortable surroundings.

My Dad has been at Smallbrook for 8 months and is very happy. We viewed many care homes and Smallbrook stood out. The bedrooms are a lovely size. The building is spacious and modern. The staff are very caring and kind. We have resident family meetings with the managers to discuss the running of the home and any suggestions are considered and taken on board.

My uncle has brain damage from a motorbike accident when he was a teenager. Social services placed him in a studio flat so that he had independent living, this became increasingly difficult, he was vulnerable and very lonely. Not now, he is washed every day, fed and warm with company, everything we have wanted for him. So much pressure has been taken off the family because he is looked after.

Overall, we as a family, feel that the level of care is extremely good. We are reassured by the genuineness of the care for our mother. Carers have taken a real interest in getting to know her as a person and adapt their care accordingly. The care team are kind to her and compassionate and have taken good care of us as close relatives too. The only constructive feedback is the access arrangements for visitors. Security is obviously a priority, however, we are often left outside waiting to be let in for long periods of time.

Reply from Loren Johns, Support Manager at Smallbrook

Dear Yvonne, thank you for your kind words and we also appreciate your feedback regarding visitor access. We will certainly take this on board in order to make improvements where possible while still ensuring the security of our residents. With thanks, Smallbrook Care Home

My Father, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, enjoyed a 7 day respite period in Smallbrook Care Home. I visited him every day and found he was completely settled and very happy. The staff treated my Father, and all of the residents, extremely well. The manager runs the home brilliantly. I highly recommend this lovely care home.

We as a family were recommended Small Brook by a work colleague. My mother settled in very quickly mainly due to the lovely calm family atmosphere. The bedrooms are of a good standard and the lounge has plenty of activities daily. The residents can take part in cooking, painting, gentle exercise and sing along with many entertainers that visit the home. Sadly my mother passed away after only five months in residence. The care and attention she received was excellent. All the staff are so caring from the chef making special foods to encourage eating, to the cleaners and laundry staff. The carers that looked after my mother in those final days gave us comfort with their kindness and genuine respectful care. We as a family thank each and every one of them and we will miss them all dearly.

Making the decision to move Mum into a care home was extremely difficult, especially with siblings living far and wide. We visited quite a few 'homes' in the Surrey area and Smallbrook Care Home was our favourite because it was conveniently located but more importantly the staff are wonderfully kind and caring and the home has excellent facilities and newly decorated spacious rooms. One of the best things about Smallbrook is their Activities programme - a lot of time and effort is gone into planning and Mum has the option to enjoy just about anything from past-times entertainment, gentle exercise, hairdressing to external trips. The manager of Smallbrook, is wonderful although she is currently on maternity leave I understand returns in October. Our experience of Smallbrook has always been a positive one and I highly recommend if you are seeking care or respite.

My wife and I are very close friends with one of the Smallbrook's elderly make Alzheimer's sufferers. We have both been very pleased with the standard of accommodation and amazed at the degree of kindness to the residents shown by all of the staff to all of the residents. Their care also extends to us as visitors. It has been a new rewarding experience to see such high standards of care, which extends through their duties to the residents to providing it with grace and good manner,

Jaqueline Johnson
Jaqueline JohnsonJob Title Home Manager

My approach as a Home manager centres on honesty and integrity, consistently displaying empathy, compassion, and respect toward every resident and colleague. Leading by example and fostering trusting working relationships are fundamental to my leadership style.

Clear communication with a listening ear is vital; this creates a positive workplace culture where team members feel safe to speak openly. This openness strengthens our team’s ability to provide excellent care to our residents. In turn, my team supports and takes care of me, creating a harmonious and caring environment for everyone involved.

My favourite part of the working day is spending time with our residents and team, sharing ideas, finding solutions, and learning more about each other. It’s the connection and togetherness that truly energises me. And at the end of the day, I look forward to going home to my family, feeling fulfilled by the meaningful work we’ve done together.

My biggest career highlight to date is the personal fulfilment I get from helping someone maintain their independence. Seeing our residents comfortable, smiling, and happy is truly rewarding. Hearing positive feedback from residents and their families not only motivates me but also allows me to share these moments.

What makes me proud in my role is when the Home achieves a good CQC rating, receives positive feedback, and enjoys strong support from families. These achievements inspire me to continue supporting my team in delivering excellent care every day.
