After a very difficult start which saw a very high degree of staff turnover and very poor communication from the home things over the past few months have definitely settled down with the current management in place clearly trying to improve communication with family members and the experience of residents
overall. In particular we have really noticed a great improvement in the events which are being organised for the residents and Mum has really benefited from being involved particularly with the musical events which she really enjoys and which are so beneficial for her with advanced dementia. It was Mum's birthday in February and the staff really made a huge effort decorating the Tides community lounge with birthday banners and balloons and the kitchen made a fantastic birthday cake for Mum. Please keep up this good work!
Reply from Blake Duckworth, Interim Manager at Windmill LodgeHi Jo-Ann,

Thank you for your kind words about the team and it is great to hear that you can see the improvements taking place. I will be sure to pass the feedback onto the team.

My wife has been treated with dignity and care by all the staff I have met.
Although she has many needs the patience and respect she receives is excellent. I have every confidence that her needs are being met on a daily basis.

Record keeping of the residents needs to be enhanced and monitored much more closely - without the evidence, this can be difficult to support CHC. Food options are excellent, and my Mum is well cared for. Albert the nurse, is excellent and has been super helpful over the last 8 months.

I have just received a notification that our fees are going up by what appears to be over 20%. I have written to them a number of times for clarification and to date I have not had a response.

I would be very careful in investing in their services.

Reply from Blake Duckworth, Interim Manager at Windmill LodgeHi Victor

Thank you for your review and we appreciate that receiving notification of any weekly fee increases can be concerning. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss this with you at a suitable time and to be able to provide some clarity on our charges.

I find all the staff very kind and helpful. The entertainment is excellent and very good for the residents, it cheers them up and makes them feel happy. My husband is very happy even though he mentions coming home, he calls it a hotel. My only complaint is he is putting on too much weight.
Reply from Blake Duckworth, Clinical Support Manager at Windmill LodgeWe are pleased to hear that you thoroughly enjoy the entertainment put on by the lodge and that your husband feels the lodge is like a hotel. We strive to deliver the best care and put on some good entertainment. Thank you for your review

An excellent Christmas Party that Pat was clearly enjoying. The staff put a 100% effort, particularly to include the residents. A very happy occasion for all involved. Pat is very settled at Windmill Lodge and I am happy and content with the high level of care given to her. All the staff are obviously
committed to giving the residents as good as quality of life as possible.
Reply from Blake Duckworth, Clinical Support Manager at Windmill LodgeMany thanks for this lovely feedback. The team work hard to be able to put on special events like this so that you can enjoy them with your wife. My wife was the first 'service user' in 'TIDES' in June 2023. Since starting from scratch I have seen a steady improvement to today's very high standards in all areas. The current management team are very proactive in seeking out and fixing perceived areas of weakness. The care and nursing staff are
compassionate, caring and professional. I wouldn't want my wife to be anywhere else!

My dad is very settled and happy at Windmill Lodge. He really likes his room and location of his room. He resides on the Wave Community. He loves the choice of food and treats such as cake and biscuits and puddings. The staff are fantastic, caring, kind, supportive and patient. If you have any requests
or issues and you speak to the staff they sort out ASAP. Assistant Manger Louise is so easy to approach and deals with any concerns you have. Seen lots of home one of the best. Very clean, great activities and day center.

To the Management
I was very disappointed when you asked me to your office on 17th September 2025 when you realised I was immediately taking my wife away from Windmill Lodge. The first thing you said 'did I realise I had to pay a month's notice' rather than enquiring why. That sums up in my mind exactly
what Windmill Lodge's priority is, it is there for profit not for the benefit of the residents or their families. To emphasise this Windmill Lodge kept running out of pads therefore I had to privately purchase a stock of pull ups to preserve my wife's dignity and keep her clear of sores. Most days my wife's pull ups were taken by your staff for use on other residents because you had no stock. The Windmill Lodge building is fine but the management and service leaves a lot to be desired due, in my opinion, to overtight financial constraints imposed by the owners.

My Mum couldn't have spent her final days in the most amazing place with the love and care from all staff. They are amazing people whom clearly are committed to make Windmill Lodge a 5 star care home and clearly deserve the 5 star rating. From the management team to the nursing staff nothing was ever
a problem that they couldn't sort out. Bright has been amazing whom nursed Mum mainly and always had time to chat and discuss her medical issues. The Deputy manager has been a rock to me and with her experience of nursing terminally ill people in her past roles to now in a management role she is a definite asset to the future and Windmill Lodge.

Windmill Lodge Residential. This is run as a business to make profit, that is the bottom line. The management is uncaring and unprofessional. When you see behind the facade, it's a different story. The only positive we can mention are the carers who are employed. Would not recommend this place. The
Nolan Day Centre. Wonderful place, fantastic staff, would highly recommend.

When the resident arrived from hospital he was unable to communicate and feel himself and I was preparing for the worst. After a short time is able to speak again, eat independently and has a renewed vigour. This has been the result lf the dedication and professionalism of the staff, their excellent

This day, at lunchtime, has been one of the best experiences I've had with my brother since Windmill Lodge opened last year. Residents were in the lounge having lunch and enjoying the social aspect of eating with other people. The chef's assistant helped to serve lunch which was good because it relieved
the care staff whilst they helped some residents. This needs to happen more often as it makes the place feel more like home for them all.

My mother was resident here until we lost her in September, had vascular dementia and was very frail. This nursing home "lost" a high value eternity ring and I was given assurances back in August that they were "looking into it" and that I would receive a response as a priority. 54 days later and I
nor Social Services have received any form of a response. They are in breach of Section 47 of the 2014 Care Act. My mum has now died and I have to explain to my daughter why an item of great personal sentimental value to her and my mother, cited as being bequeathed to her in my mother's will is missing. We have supplied them with photographs, a full insurance valuation and still no response. I am personally shocked by Athena's management's kick the can down the road approach to this matter. The management team seem unwilling to or unable to deal with a basic insurance claim. Probably best avoided if your elderly relatives have any high value personal effects. Or just avoid altogether.
Reply from Matthew Bell, Regional Operations Manager at Windmill LodgeWe are sorry that it appears your mothers ring was lost. We do ask that valuable items are not brought into the home and that they are insured if they are. It is regrettable that very small, but very valuable items, such as rings, can be mislaid or lost all too easily. We have not acted in breach in section 47 of the Care Act and have not obstructed the local authority at all. We do, however, accept that our response to your reporting the loss was not as prompt or helpful as it ought to have been and we apologise for that. We have made a payment to your late mothers estate for the cost of a replacement ring.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (9.009)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (9.009) out of 10 for Windmill Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 34 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.302 for Windmill Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (239 Excellents x 5) + (90 Goods x 4) + (27 Satisfactorys x 3) + (11 Poors x 2) + (24 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 391 Ratings = 4.302
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.707 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Windmill Lodge is based on 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 205 registered maximum number of service users is 41. 29 Positive Reviews ÷ 41 = 0.707
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
