Review from F W (Daughter of Resident) published on 1 August 2025 Submitted via Postal Card • Report
Overall Experience 1.0 out of 5
My review is based on regular visits over a 6 months period. Its purpose, to prevent other families experiencing unnecessary stress (putting a loved one in a care home is upsetting enough) our dad was placed in a totally unsuitable part of the home for 6 weeks where lack of stimulation was clearly detrimental
to his mixed dementia and mental health. After weeks of my concerns being ignored, I complained to the manager who agreed dads needs were not being met where he was.
The more suitable part failed to meet these needs too with activities only 2 days of the week (thus worsening dementia traits) lack of staff to support residents as well as family members (made to feel uneasy asking questions re care because we were never consulted in the devising of his care plan- struggling to even get access to visit) having to find and ask a member of staff to let you out was inconvenient as was waiting outside for lengths of time to be let in- the receptionist worked Mon-Fri and carried both halves of the home. No exercise caused weight gain and mobility issues and required new clothes and a wheelchair to be purchased. Lack of medical supplies for dads needs as the home failed to register him on the prescription service, only discovered by having to take dad out of home on weekends to give him stimulation.
After 4 months the manager informed us and the social worker that not only could not keep him safe due to the road at the front and the river at the back he was annoying other residents with his repetition (a symptom of the disease worsened by inadequate care and support). A blessing for us now though as dad resides in a fabulous home like a luxury hotel (not just the next step up from a hospital) with amazing, knowledgeable staff, where nothing is too much trouble and we are kept fully in the loop all of the time regarding his care.
Reply from Gemma Ixer, Nominated Individual at Riverside Care Complex

Dad was placed at our care home by social services after a visit to the hospital; it clearly stated on his clinical notes that Dad had Dementia and should not be near open staircases which we are bound to recognise. This was, therefore, a deciding factor to where his room was situated within the home. We usually suggest a settling in period of 6 weeks for any resident. It was decided at a very early stage that the home was not the most suitable place to meet Dad's needs or that of the family. Work commenced to find a home that was available and met the families needs. We worked hard with all parties to try and expedite this process but the final decision rests outside our control. We felt the family was actively involved and aware during this process and we continued to provide the high level of care we are known for, in addition to the family requests. Despite this review we felt Dad and the majority of his relatives were happy and he was safe at all times during his stay with us.

The care given to my uncle was wonderful he was treated with respect and dignity at all times. As we are not local the communication we received was very informative and welcome. I would just like to say. My mum has recently been in hospital. The staff at the care home were great. They checked up on my mum to make sure she was ok and they also kept me informed of any situation that occurred. Even the manager went to see mum at the hospital to make sure she was being looked after
properly. Many thanks for everything.

Looked after my dad in his last 18 months like their own. The staff were really good with him and nothing was too much trouble if we had a problem we communicated with them and worked together to put it right. Got to know a lot of the residents there and enjoyed talking to them all. Thought it was one
of the better care homes in the area, easy to get to, friendly staff and a lovely place with lovely gardens. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a safe and friendly place for their loved ones.

Mum went into Riverside Care Complex for two weeks respite. It was quite upsetting as I'd never left Mum before. But the manager and all the staff were both very welcoming and supportive. Mum settled in really well and was enjoying all the activities. After a week I got a call from the manager saying
Mum had been taken to the hospital as she was not well. When I got to the hospital, Mum looked emasculate, clean, hair shining and clean clothes I was told if Riverside hadn't acted so quickly things could have been a lot worse, as Mum has sepis. After 3 weeks in hospital, I wanted Mum to go back to Riverside where I knew she would be well looked after and was happy thanks to the manager we got Mum back to Riverside, where she was so warmly welcomed back. The staff are so so wonderful and I have a lot to thank them for.

The Riverside Care Home is a perfect place for those affected by Parkinson's Disease / Dementia / non-verbal. Simply because the staff were so welcoming, caring and were totally tuned into both of our needs. As the disease rapidly progressed the nursing care required was excellent.
After spending
a lot of time trying to look after my husband at home the relief of finding such a great 'homely' place really helped both of us to move forward with our lives.
My husband sadly lost his battle with the disease in April 2023. Nonetheless, I believe it was the best place in the York area to provide the care needed at such an important time of our lives.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to a star team for helping to make my husbands stay as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Highly Recommended.

Incompetent management! Cost us the ability to get CCF. It appears no one is available there to stand in for management when they are away.
Cost the chance of a potential £15k refund for Dad when he was end of life.

Many thanks for the opportunity to give feedback about Mum's care over the last year until her death on the 9th December.
Mum had basically been uplifted by York City Council after she fell too many times and couldn't cope. I had no say in the matter of where she was placed as I live in New Zealand.
Mum had dementia which increased exponentially after each fall she had had.
Last September/October I basically cold-called at the home to visit Mum. I must say I was very pleased with her care, her presentation, her surroundings. I had come armed with a number of other homes that I had intended to visit during my stay, (I didn't visit any). Unfortunately, Mum didn't know me but I had some good visits with her.
In December Mum caught COVID and subsequently died on the 9th December.
I need to talk about communication between staff and myself as a relative.
I would get so many different views about how Mum was, especially in the week she died. I knew she was ill but was completely taken by surprise when I got a call to say she had died. The email telling me Mum had been put on the end-of-life care pathway by her GP came after her death.
Mum caught COVID yet she had no visitors as I live overseas. I hope a review has been carried out to find out how it got into the home.
Mum's photograph also ended up on a social media page for Riverside which was also something I had not been asked about, imagine my shock when I saw her? I feel this is a terrible privacy violation. A few numbers of her family were not aware of her situation.
Please ask staff to communicate better with relatives.

I'm glad for the chance to thank Derwent House and its staff publicly, for looking after my uncle after a fall in York, when his nearest family and friends are in Sheffield. He tells me that their medical expertise and care, the comfort of the accommodation and most of all, the human help given by so
many of their carers, have meant that any problems have been kept to an absolute minimum. Many thanks from both of us.

My mum was in Derwent House for a good number of years. The care she received was outstanding as an ex-nurse I notice more. Mum was cared for as part of the family by carers in the home, I witnessed many acts of love between the carers and Mum. Mum was very astute and spoke her mind and always told
me she loved being there and was very happy she told me the carers were outstanding and couldn't do any more for her than they did. I trusted them to care for her and was very happy as she became more infirm and she required more and more care they delivered and end-of-life care was excellent. I'm sure the carers shed tears when she passed away. Thank you!

All staff are very caring and made my mum feel very loved and safe during her time there (nearly 2 years). During lockdown when we were not able to visit, we were able to have telephone calls and speak to my mum which although not the same as a visit, was lovely to have the option of a telephone call.
Always lots of activities for the residents to enjoy and staff to help them. The staff always kept the family up to date with any developments in my mum's condition and her care was discussed regularly. I thank the staff from the bottom of my heart for being there when I couldn't be.

Mam was admitted to Derwent House after a stroke left her virtually paralysed at the age of 92. Mam had previously been extremely independent so was extremely unhappy at needing all her care needs to be met by others.
The staff were all extremely kind. We had a few hiccups during Mam's stay but the
staff were very professional, working with us to address our concerns. Mam always looked clean and tidy and her room was impeccable. While we appreciate that all the staff work extremely hard our special thanks go to the staff who bore the brunt of my emotional state and frustration at being so far away. Mam was treated with love, dignity and kindness during her stay. She sadly passed away on May 22nd 2022 and we can honestly say that she couldn't have been in a better place.

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 65 registered maximum number of service users is 13. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 13 = 0.462
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
