I was very pleased with the care my mum was given while she was in Cooper House. The staff couldn't have been more caring and sympathetic to her and the other residents. I have to give a special mention to one of the carers, who showed me understanding when I was getting upset. There was another member
of staff whose name I unfortunately can't remember, but she attended my mum's funeral with another member of staff who was also very kind. Yes, Cooper House is an excellent care home!!

There seems to be a shortage of staff. Residents are often left in the day lounge unsupervised for long periods of time. On the rare occasion there is a member of staff in the lounge they are often preoccupied on their mobile phone rather than interacting with residents. I often visit my mother and
do not see a member of staff at all during my visit or have to go hunting for someone to help other residents. There are a small number of lovely, dedicated staff but there are some who are quite rude and abrupt with both residents and visitors. The dining room is often dirty and not set for meal times. I feel that the activities/entertainment is poor and there appears to be a lack of stimulation for residents. I would like regular updates on what activities my mother has been involved in. I would suggest some nice background music in the lounge. The home looks run down and needs investment in decor and furnishings. I have seen no improvements since Strong Life Care took over in Jan 2025.

Had to request Dad to be bathed as he was smelly. When his feet swelled, I asked for doctor to come and have a look and his legs became very hot and swollen and sore, and the doctor said for Dad to elevate his legs.
I still wasn't happy, so I persisted, and then 2 days later, a nurse and another doctor
said he had cellulitis and needed antibiotic cream. This should have been prescribed at the first notification, thus causing unnecessary discomfort.
Reply from Ayuuba Nafah, Home Manager at Cooper House

I had a meeting with the daughter regarding the concerns raised above and was able to show evidence to her that her father (MC) has a shower 2 - 3 a week and has a wash between showers. Daughter suggested that her dad would like a bath once a week which has been added to the care plan.Regarding MC's swollen legs, he was seen the the GP who advised us to elevate his feet and monitor. We arranged another GP review for MC when his legs did not improve and the GP prescribed antibiotics and topical cream. We listened to his daughter when she wasn't happy with the initial intervention of elevating legs. I have discussed the concerns raised by MC's daughter with the team to ensure that we are consistently addressing the concerns.

My dad is lovingly cared for at Cooper House. I know he is kept safe - the staff go over and above to do this and care for his needs - from carers - nurses - management team. They are also there for us as a family which means so very much.
Dad is happy, feels secure, I couldn't ask for better people
to care for him 24/7.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.658)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.658) out of 10 for Cooper House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.195 for Cooper House is calculated as follows: ( (73 Excellents x 5) + (22 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) + (13 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 123 Ratings = 4.195
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.463 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cooper House is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 16 = 0.563
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
