For anyone looking for accomodation for their loved ones CHESTNUT LODGE is the perfect place
My brother lived at Chestnut Lodge for three years before his passing in May 2025.
His time there was so happy, he was well cared for and treated like family, as was I when visiting.
When he became ill he
was looked after with such care and attention, even though he could be difficult at times. Their support after his passing was second to none.
The manager (Graham) and his wonderful team
treated every resident with respect and attention even when they were run off their feet.
My brother absolutely loved being at Chestnut Lodge, he called it home. The catering was excellent (he loved his food)
Bedrooms and comunial areaswere always clean and tidy, the housekeeping team team making sure that residents had clean laundry and bedding, Very important to me
The activities team always made sure that the residents had an enjoyable and varied program. So much laughter so much
Reply from Graham Oakes, Registered Manager at Chestnut LodgeThank June for your lovely comments.
Les was a lovely man, very popular with staff and other residents. We do try to include relatives into the Chestnut family, so I am pleased you felt that. I will pass on your comments to the team. I am particularly pleased that you praised our Domestic Team who do so much good work to make our residents lives better.
Thank you.

The staff appear to be very caring towards residents. The food is good quality but sometimes not very warm by the time it is served. Activities provided are varied and interesting for residents to join in with if they want to. There were some issues with the lift breaking down which took a long time
to resolve but presumably this was down to the contractors and having to wait for spare parts. This was potentially an issue for residents on upper floors if they were unable to use the stairs to access some activities etc.
Reply from Graham Oakes, Registered Manager at Chestnut LodgeThank you for your review.
It was our pleasure to look after Tom.
We have recently appointed a highly experienced Chef and the feedback from residents and other relatives is that food service has improved.
I shared your concerns about the reliability of the lift and am pleased to say a brand new lift was fitted before Christmas.
We have also purchased a lift climbing chair in the unlikely event our new lift breaks down.

I can't thank the staff at Chestnut Lodge care home enough for the care, kindness and respect they showed my father. He has been a resident there for around two years and from the very beginning the team made him feel safe, comfortable and truly valued.
My father was too ill for me to look after him.
Since he's been a resident at Chestnut Lodge, he has gone from eating liquid food to solid foods. During Chinese New Year, the staff had decorated his room to celebrate with him. They also make Chinese food for him on occasions.
The staff are not only professional but genuinely compassionate, attentive and willing to go the extra mile. The home itself is warm, clean and welcoming, creating a lovely environment for residents.
Knowing that my dad is surrounded by people who treat him with respect and kindness gave my family a real peace of mind. Our family are incredibly grateful for everything and would recommend Chestnut Lodge to any family looking for a supportive care home.
Reply from Graham Oakes, Registered Manager at Chestnut LodgeThank you Lucy for your review.
It has been interesting looking after your father, with different challenges to our other residents but also a pleasure.
Thank you for your kind words which I will share with the whole team, particularly the 5 Activity staff who were excellent with the Chinee New Year.
Thank you Graham

After many years of looking after my wife with daily care workers four times a day, Lydia went into respite and her life changed for the better. So much so that when a place opened in Chestnut Lodge she stayed on and has improved incredibly where even with dementia she is active with a wonderful Activities
team who encourage her to join in the physical activities.
It is such a blessing to know how dedicated the care home staff are and they are willing to listen to the concerns of myself as Lydia's loved one, when any problems do happen to crop up. And what a blessing that I can share a Lunch with Lydia because I can eat with her when on my Sunday visit.
It gives me such peace of mind to knew she is well looked after and a great joy to send the pictures of Lydia around the world to our many friends in Canada, South Africa, Russia and Australia. Thank You all at Chestnut Lodge.

My mum spent the last couple of months at Chestnut lodge before she sadly passed away last May. The care she received by the nursing staff and carers was excellent. Mums room was light and airy and she was looked after and cared for well. They made the last few weeks of mums life as comfortable as
possible and did all they could to accommodate her needs. The team also supported us as a family to deal with the very sad and difficult time that it is losing someone so precious to us. We are really grateful to them and highly recommend.

My Mum needed nursing care now her dementia was more advanced so we chose Chestnut Lodge and we couldn't have chosen better! The staff were absolutely amazing not just with Mum but with us too - very informative with updates on Mum at every visit (we visited most days) and also over the phone. They
were all very friendly and welcoming to all Mum's visitors! All the residents are so very well looked after and nothing is missed - the food and activities also fantastic! We had looked at other care homes but this one totally outweighed all the others from the minute we stepped through the door we knew instantly! All the staff treat residents as family - it was so lovely to see! I TOTALLY recommend Chestnut Lodge and it gives me so much comfort knowing that my Mum spent her final days with the very best care from the very best people in the most wonderful care home! I cannot thank them enough!

I have been a resident in Chestnut Lodge for just over 6 months and I have received excellent care. The staff are warm and friendly. As a member of the Chestnut Lodge family I have felt valued and respected as an individual. The activities have been varied and deserve a special mention. The range and
extent and the thought that goes into them is what makes it better than any other home. I feel lucky to have a place here.

The staff at Chestnut Lodge have been amazing with my Mum who's had to go into full care. I/We cannot fault the efforts of staff to welcome my dad and make him feel at home there were a few occasions when we questioned his care (sat in bed at 11.30 with no bedding and just a lightweight blanket covering him and no pants) but it was rectified. Also feel more attention to him complaining of
a full bladder could have been addressed all minor points.
Reply from Graham Oakes, Registered Manager at Chestnut LodgeThank you for your review.Losing a parent is always a difficult time. Your father was only with us for 10 days but I know you visited him on most of them. Unfortunately on one occasion we did not meet our own high standards. Staff had offered him care twice, but he declined. I spoke to them at the time to guide them going forward.I am pleased that we did achieve our normal high standards for the rest of his stay and his passing.

My Father was a resident at Chestnut Lodge for almost a year before he sadly passed away in February. When he moved in, in March 2024 he had already been in 2 other care homes, neither of which he had been able to settle in. From the very first day that my father moved in to Chestnut Lodge, the manager
reassured our family that they could take care of him and that he would, given time settle in. These were such incredible words of reassurance at a very difficult time for us all. The manager was right and my father did after a few months settle in very well. The staff had taken the time to understand him and this made such a difference. The care team were wonderful and my father developed lovely relationships with a number of them. Towards the end of his life my father was treated with excellent care, kindness and respect. Our family were shown such compassion and understanding and time was always made to answer any questions that we had. Thank you to the manager and your wonderful team for everything.
Reply from Graham Oakes, Registered Manager at Chestnut Lodge thank you for your review and kind words.Your father was an interesting man who just needed time to adjust to his new surroundings, which he did.I know he appreciated your regular visits and those of other family members, particularly during his final days when you all showed such devotion.

My father was a resident at Chestnut Lodge from March 2024 until his death in February 2024. Throughout his time here he was treated with respect and understanding, and the care he was shown, often in challenging circumstances due to his worsening dementia, was exemplary. My family and I were very regular
visitors - between us we were there around 4 times a week, often more - and we got to know the wonderful carers and nursing staff well, and were able to observe first-hand the care he was given. The highly experienced senior management team inspired confidence, and showed great compassion throughout his stay. We are hugely grateful for the care and professionalism shown by the wonderful team there, who go above and beyond, in challenging circumstances, to look after the residents.

I have visited different times of the day - always clean and welcoming. My mum is not encouraged to use a walking stick which she went in with and hospital advised. I understand it's now lost/gone missing. A secure post box into the office would be a great help as I pay the bill by cheque, having to
get staff to put it into the office each time. Never has her hearing aids in, it's hard I know but she needs them and I just got new ones in December at £500 because the last home lost hers. Overall - great place on hygiene, food (I think), staff but a lot of money each week for things not to be getting 100%.
Reply from Graham Oakes, Registered Manager at Chestnut LodgeThank you for your kind words about the home. When you next visit, please either speak to me or one of the nurses so we can update on your mother's care needs, mobility, hearing, etc. We have at least two nurses working every day and I'm here Monday to Friday. Our receptionist can assist you to set up a Direct Debit to make your life easier. Thank you for your suggestion of a secure post box into our reception, we will look into that. Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.786)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.786) out of 10 for Chestnut Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 29 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.786 for Chestnut Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (275 Excellents x 5) + (59 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 341 Ratings = 4.786
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Chestnut Lodge is based on 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 38 registered maximum number of service users is 7.6, which has been reached with 29 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
