Arkwright House Care Home is in Castleton, not far from Rochdale, offering residential, nursing, residential dementia and nursing dementia care.

There are large wheelchair-friendly landscaped gardens along with a furnished patio at the care home, where some of the residents like to spend time gardening.

The home has bright, comfortable bedrooms and living areas which are all easily accessible by wheelchair. Residents can decorate their rooms with small items of their own furniture and possessions.

Staff at the home encourage everyone to eat and celebrate special occasions together. If a resident is unable to attend a family event, the home encourage the family to provide photographs and music of the event.

Arkwright House Care Home is run by Bloomcare which is a company of Christian values that embraces cultural diversity. They believe that coming into care is not the end of life but the beginning of another journey.

Entertainers regularly visit and entertain residents and neighbourhood groups and volunteers often pop in for a cup of tea and a chat. There is a host of activities on offer to residents including baking, writing, gardening, dancing, painting, quizzes and playing chess.

Residents also get involved with walks, feeding the birds, light weeding in the garden, baking, laying the dining table and arranging flowers.

My dad has settled in very very well to Arkwright House. The staff are like an extension to his family. They treat him with the utmost kindness and respect. My dad feels safe and well cared for. He has some lovely meals and enjoys all the food. He joins in the daily, weekly and external activities that
are put on and are wonderful. His room is homely and he has a lovely view with bird feeders with visiting garden birds and a squirrel. Dad is very very happy and so is his family. Thank you.

This is an update from my review earlier in the year.
Mum continues to settle in well at Arkwright and the staff are wonderfully supportive of her. Mum has so much affection for the staff that she often refers to them as her 'children' - that is high praise indeed and gives me so much comfort to know
that she is in safe hands. Mum participates in many of the activities run by the team particularly enjoying the weekly group exercises.
I remain thoroughly impressed by all the team at Arkwright and can't thank them enough for the way they are looking after my dear Mother.

Lovely staff and clean facilities. Staff are always visible and engage in a nice manner with the elderly. I did not see any management as I go on weekends but all staff is managed in a proficient manner.

The care my mother received at Garfield House was very good. They were kind, thoughtful and attentive. The home is clean, the food is good and the rooms are warm. The staff are brilliant and we can't thank them enough for looking after our mam for the last 5 years of her life. If I had to sum up Garfield
House in a few words it would be 'They are a safe pair of hands'.

My dad came in here after suffering a bleed on the brain. The staff here are amazing. The food choice is lovely, they go above & beyond to see to his needs. Cannot fault them at all. My dad isn't the easiest of patients, he is always clean & tidy. I wouldn't hesitate to place someone here you dearly

Home from home! What more can I say about Arkwright House having the most caring staff and the atmosphere as soon as you walk into the building is so warm and welcoming. During the time Dad has been here he looks very relaxed and happy, he has also gained some weight due to the excellent standard of
care given by the lovely staff. The unit is extremely well managed by the manager and it is kept very clean by the lovely housekeeping staff. I would highly recommend Arkwright House to anyone who wants excellent quality of care for an elderly relative.

I have quite a lot of experience with residential homes having been a nursing sister, then working for Social Services reviewing residents in care homes so it took me several weeks viewing 8 homes then viewing Arkwright House, I felt it is a comfortable, caring environment, clean and the staff all are
very friendly and informative.
My uncle has never asked to go back home at all, he appears happy, well-looked after and settled.
I am very happy with Arkwright House.

Arkwright House has the best staff they are so lovely, helpful and caring, my father loves being here it's like being with family.
I do not need to worry about him as he is very happy where he is.
They have lots of activities for them to do each week, taking them on trips out to the beach and local
areas.
Staff are very attentive, care about my father's interests and his family, they see to all his needs.
And contact me if he needs anything, all staff have a lovely happy personality always asking if residents are ok, it's always a lovely atmosphere I enjoy visiting my Dad each week.

As a visitor, the door is always answered with a smile. I ask 'how's Mum' and all the staff know who I'm talking about (including cook if she's about). This reassures me and assures me Mum is treated as an individual.

Mum moved here over 12 months ago and immediately settled. If asked, she says that she is happy there. There are activities every day and they will encourage residents to join in, but Mum prefers the quiet of her room, which they respect. There is also a hairdresser on sight and manicures and pedicures
are available.
Meals are good and prompt and there are plenty of brews delivered throughout the day with a smile.
The staff are always attentive and caring. Whenever I call her room is clean and tidy. They are aware of any issues that arise, and promptly address them as best they can, keeping me informed. I feel I can go to any one of them if I have any concerns or queries regarding Mum and they are more than happy to discuss things with me.
I would have no hesitation to use Arkwright House again.

Very happy with the care my relative is receiving.
The staff are always helpful and friendly.
The rooms are very comfortable and clean.
I think my cousin is being very well looked after. It is not easy as she has dementia.

The care my father has received since August 2023 has been excellent. The staff are always very attentive and caring. They go the extra mile, any concerns about my dad's health are raised immediately and engagement with the GP is ensured. The staff attend very well to my dad's self-care. He needs a
lot of support and is always very clean and tidy. My dad seems very happy in the environment and the staff clearly know him very well. I would highly recommend Arkwright House.

Father in Law moved into Arkwright House Care Home in December, the care he is receiving is excellent. The manager and staff are all very friendly helpful and caring. Extremely helpful with the transition as this was quite stressful for the family. He has settled in quickly and is very happy to be there.

My mother also stays here for short-term respite breaks, once again staff are extremely helpful, caring and support all her needs.

Bernadette Lewis

Job Title: Registered Home Manager Joined: 2016

Bernie is the Home Manager at Arkwright care home. Bernadette started her career in Care at Arkwright House in 2000. Starting in the role of a Care Assistant, she quickly realised her passion is within the profession therefore she took an opportunity to be trained as a Senior Care Assistant. Bernadette enjoyed many new challenges with training and enjoyed upskilling her colleagues. She, therefore, became the Moving and Handling coordinator, and trainer in Dementia Awareness and Infection Control Lead. Bernadette took the role of Arkwright’s unit manager in 2011 after completing her qualification in NVQ Level 5 Health Care Management. She has loved and cared for residents in Arkwright House for over 11 years. Bernadette is very proud to be a part of Bloomcare’s family since 2019.
