Residents and the team from a Poole care home joined over 450 people taking on a charity walk along Poole seafront.
Three residents in wheelchairs and several staff from Marjorie House care home, on Crichel Mount Road, which is run by not-for-profit care provider Care South, took part in Forest Holme Hospice Charity’s inaugural Sunset Walk on Friday 17 April. Hundreds of walkers set off from Branksome Dene Chine to complete either a 5km or 8km route with views over Sandbanks and Poole Harbour in memory of their loved ones.
The Marjorie House team were proud to support the event, which also saw them set up a refreshment station on Evening Hill to provide a pitstop halfway along the 8km route. It also served as the finish line for the Marjorie House participants, who then had a short walk further along the road to get home.
Maree, who lives in Marjorie House, said: “I had fun. It was very good as it was something that I’ve never done before. It was lovely that the team enabled me to join in with everything.”
Myrna, who also lives in the home, said: “It was wonderful to be enabled to be part of it. It was lovely to see all the people and dogs on the walk. We missed out on a nice sunset as the weather was a bit cloudy, but it was nice to be there. I’m very grateful that I could join in.”
Georgie Powell, Home Manager of Marjorie House, said: “Our residents had a fantastic time being part of the Sunset Walk as we travelled along the seafront alongside over 450 other people in honour of the very worthy cause. At Care South, we focus on enabling our residents to feel part of their local community and to be encouraged to do the things that they can and want to do rather than focusing on any limitations they feel they have.”
In total, the Sunset Walk raised over £17,500 for Forest Holme Hospice, which provides palliative and end of life care to over 1,000 people and their families each year across Poole, Wimborne and Purbeck.
Claire Cooper, Events & Challenges Manager at Forest Holme Hospice Charity, said: “Seeing so many people get together for our very first Sunset Walk was an incredibly powerful reminder of how much the community cares for the work we do. We’re so grateful to the residents and team from Marjorie House for supporting the event and getting involved on the day which helped to create such a warm and uplifting atmosphere for everyone taking part.”
